When does life end?

Surely I have the right to chop off my own hand, or something more extreme like killing myself.

When a bullet enters one's brain, surely the human is dead, but the body is not yet dead. The cells live on.

If I chop off my hand, I kill a few cells where I made the cut, but the hand does not die right away.

If I remove some cells from my body, I do not necessarily kill them. If they die because they lack the ability to nourish themselves without me, than they were merely a part of me.

When does life end?

Life does not end. The scientific view, that life is a continuum, with no beginning or end, is the only valid view, in my opinion. As to the religious view (life begins at conception), well people are entitled to believe what they want. The problem comes when they try to impose such religious definition upon rest of the society (by trying to ban abortion etc.).

Now, when it comes to human life, I think most agree that human life ends once the brain is dead. But exactly when human life begins, again, we don't know. Scientists don't know and that means society doesn't know.

Is that as good as head cheese?
I don't think he thinks so. He ate 3. I think he nibbled on headcheese once and grunted. As far as I know he's never touched it since.

When does life end?
Individually or universally?

When your brain cells quit, your pump quits, and all that's left of you is a bag of dying cells.

Scientists don't know and that means society doesn't know.
roflmao You are hardly one to speak for scientists.

Tell him to try the Hungarian variety.:lol:

Then he and Y.J. will have something in common to discuss.

Is an unfertilized chicken's egg "alive"? Or is it in a prelife state showing some signs of life?
Air moves. Is it alive?

Careful - wasn't I insulted for pointing out that the original post didn't specity we were talking about 'human' life? Seems to me somebody called me a moron for making that point.

So life starts when someone eats Hungarian headcheese? I really don't see the connection between headcheese and the initiation of life.

hhhmmm Guess I forgot, sorry.

Anyway, the last I heard was that life on planet Earth started when a few bits from meteorites met with the right conditions and sprouted reproducing cells.
Universally, I think life always existed. individually, life starts when cells divide. Personally, when my first cell divided is when my life started. :D

You know what Anna? I don't think so either, BUT no less pertinent than rouladen- both of which are probably more interesting than the topic of the thread.............:lol::lol:

Hubby made one comment about rouladen in a reply to someone but his topic was still about life and I mentioned it in one post. You guys carried on for many posts about headcheese. There's a big diff there.

I don't hang around threads I am not interested in.

When did Adam and Eve officially become alive? Maybe their situation can settle this debate.

Once fertilization takes place we have human life in its initial formative stage. Termination of that life at that stage is termination of a human life in its initial formative stage.

This thread, without the illuminating and ever-so-wise input of SirJosephPorter will never be the same.

THANK GOD!!!

EDITED: Never mind!

Looking at the posters on line who do I see, but HIMSELF!

So much for His farewell!

I guess He never learned to make Himself invisible. After all, that is only practiced by "cons", according to His soul-mate Avro.

You've read my mind right on Y.J. My first thought upon seeing the resurrection was "my God, I thought this thing died when it's chief proponent left".............Some things just never die..................which may give some credence to my belief on the other thread................:lol::lol::lol:

I said this a while ago on His swansong thread:

"Here is a poll:

Who can predict the date when SirRupertMurgartroyd aka SirJosephPorter can no longer resist the temptation of reading the posts on Canadian Content, but not to respond, will happen? Who can predict the inevitable? Who can come closest to the date and time when His ego will overcome His phony modesty? Who can predict with accuracy of the time when He will have enough unrecognized invisibility?

My guess is no later than March 4th, 2011. In spite of the fact that Democrats will have lost both houses long before that - like in November, 2010 - and there will be several Democrat scandals that he would gladly sweep under the carpet?

If I am wrong, and SirJosephPorter is, indeed, in incognito, Vanisle, please let him know that He is still loved, adored and admired.

Be CAREFUL, now, even if it may not show here, I WILL keep track!!!!!"

I am sorry, I gave Him too much credit.

And I feel bad that I can't predict winning lottery numbers with such accuracy.

It did not die. It is now 2:29 P.M. Central time and He is still online.

Update: He, who tearfully bid adieau, is still on line at 2:52 P.M. Central time.

Update: He, who tearfully bid adieau is now off-line. Or learned how to use the 'invisible' option. Time: 3:25 P.M. Central time.

Shhhhhhhhh, better to let "sleeping dogs lie". Even though S.J. and I are miles apart in our philosophies (and I'm the first person to let him know) I have no desire to denigrate the man.........but it wouldn't surprise me to see him back. Possibly Dec. 24 to wish us all Merry Xmas.
