When Trump first came to office, scholars of fascism typically said they did not consider him a fascist, for he was not opposed to democracy. However, three-and-a-half years of praising dictators, seeking to subvert elections, and contravening the constitution, has made it abundantly clear they were wrong. They also said he was not a fascist because he did not use extralegal violence. Yet, he has called on followers to beat up protesters. He has supported armed militias storming state capitals. He has praised heavily armed white nationalists who had just killed a demonstrator. He has shared a video making the genocidal threat “the only good Democrat’s a dead Democrat.” And now he has created a private army, which is abducting citizens from the streets, with neither probable cause nor identification, against the wishes of city and state officials.
The experts who told us Trump is not a fascist were wrong, according to their own definitions. And the people who looked to the experts were wrong, because the experts they looked to were deceived. But we are still reluctant to call him fascist because of all the horrors the name implies. However, the concentration camps packed with unwashed kids, the starvation of millions of children in Yemen, and his willingness to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans by letting a plague run rampant, in a bid to bolster his polling, should have made it clear long ago that the fascism this time could easily become as bad as the last. Hitler did not take his country to war until six years after he entered office, and the genocide did not really get going until he had been in office for a decade. It is only the gradual erosion of norms and institutions that allows us to think that the fascism this time is much different from the last.
