RE: What election issue i

From what I understand, he hates everybody, Vanni...he just one epithet slip in public is all.

He's got a tough run this next time though. The seat could easily go Liberal.

Now this is a different view..........Fletcher made noxious comments about the Japanese?

I agree with the person that said if you are born with a dissability you are at the mercy of the system. No insurance money no settlements. My son is visually impared from birth. He however is 15 and carrying a 95 overall average in a regular school and still he is having difficulties fitting in to our narrow minded society. Getting a part time job has so far been impossible. I would guess that if Stephen Harper becomes prime minister dissability benifets would be cut in all provinces to pay for his tax cuts that of course will only benefit the wealthy that is the main issue for me.

On May 21, 2005, Fletcher apologized for saying at a veterans' convention in Winnipeg a week before that "The Japs were bastards", referring to Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.

Yes Jay, you're absolutely right...we should let this one slide because Fletcher's stupid, and doesn't know any better...or is it that we should feel sorry for him?

Well, he may be stupid.....I don't know the man.

But he was perfectly correct when he called the Japanese Imperial Army "bastards". The Japanese Imperial Army made the German Stormtroopers look like Humanitarian Relief in comparison.

300,000 civilians murdered in Nanking in 6 months. That's not during war or insurrection, but after they surrendered. Every Chinese female 12 years of age or over declared "free prostitutes" for Japanese soldiers. To say nothing of thev 200 or so Canadian POWs starved to death or murdered in captivity.

"Bastards" I think, is kinda mild. It would have been a very blustery day in hell before I apologized.

If he was, in fact, referring to the Japanese Imperial Army, then he was correct, if understated, and, more importantly, THE JAPANESE IMPERIAL ARMY NO LONGER EXISTS, so calling them "bastards" is no worse than calling the "SS" bastards.

In no way could a clear reference to the Japanese Imperial Army be construed as applying to current Japanese society.

Some people are quick to jump to offense without understanding.

What he said was, "The Japs were bastards." No mention of the Imperial Army. Since you guys are so into context, look at in the context of how we treated Japanese Canadians. Or do you support stealing people's stuff and locking them up in camps?

That's been the general pattern with these guys.

Rational people are going to look at it in the context of what he meant, not from the view point of what you wish he meant, for political purposes.

Anyway, back on topic: what election issue is most important to me? I want the federal government to stay out of provincial affairs. I want taxation realigned so we don't have federal governments rolling in cash while provinces, and even more so municipalities are cash-starved. I want taxation powers given to municipalities. More decentralized government - the closer the level of government to the people it represents, the more effective it is, and the more responsive. I want smaller government - they can't be all things to all people. The bigger they grow, the more 'new' programs they need to dream up, the more mismanagement and corruption. Focus on the core government areas of responsibility.

Just after the second world war, G.I.Joe Comics were fairly common reading material for 6 year olds. For years I thought all Japanese were funny little bandy legged people with thick glasses.

Rational people complained and Fletcher was forced to apologise.

That was still a fairly common stereotype into the 1970's, Juan.

Why not just return to having city states? We could change the name of Toronto to New Rome.

I want smaller government - they can't be all things to all people.

We saw the result of the "smaller government" doctrine in New Orleans this fall. Programs get cut, nobody is left in charge of programs and projects that remain.

I want the federal government to stay out of provincial affairs.

What are provincial affairs? We're trying to get my MP to stop my city and province from putting a hog plant in close to me. There are environmental concerns with where it's going, not to mention issues with housing, traffic, and the proliferation of factory farming. One of the options is to actually put it closer to me, but in a different location so that these concerns are addressed.

If we can't take this to the feds, who do we take it to? It's a local issue, but it has federal implications.

Interesting link..

It's funny. The worst thing to happen to B.C. was electing Cambell's Liberals with a huge majority. The second worst thing to happen to B.C. was electing the NDP with a majority. Ya can't win.......

I have no idea what he said, or didn't say, or in what context it was, or wasn't said. :) Confused?

If he said what he said in reference to Japanese behaviour in WWII, he was correct.

What we did to Japanese-Canadians was outrageous, but the two things can hardly be compared.

I guess you'll just have to trust the two Winnipeggers on the board then, Colpy. Fletcher is a bad, bad man. He's also mean and more than a little dim. :D

Does Stephen Harper love Canada?

You know, we've all been there as young people. You're squirming around in the backseat of a car and just as you get the young lady's pants undone she grabs your hand and says, "Do you love me?"

You stutter and stammer and try to give the impression that you love her because you want into her pants, but the truth is that you really only want the goodies and you consider lying outright but know that you'll get caught by that lie later.

So you go for the impression by skirting around the issue and talking about her hair or how smart she is, but without actually saying the word and hope that it works.

The thing is that it never really works. Either she zips her pants up and demands that you take her home or she keeps on pressing and then if you do say the word, she calls you a liar and then zips her pants up and takes you home. When you get older, you realise that she was right to do so.

Stephen Harper doesn't realise that though. He's been trying to get his hand into Canada's pants for a long time. Today he failed to answer the question. He skirted the issue and stuttered and stammered and offered conditions and generally did all he could to avoid saying that he loved Canada.

I think it's time we slap him in the face and tell him to drive us home.
