ok last night I had a rough night.

I felt like I didn't get any quality sleep at all.

I'll tell you what happened earlier, maybe that can help people decipher.

I had a nap like around 3pm ish. it was for an hour.

I had a berry smoothie around 10:20pm.. which is only 40 minutes before I usually go to bed. but I didn't actually turn off my light and lay down to sleep till 11:18pm.

that was my night.

the reason I had a nap btw, was that I didn't get to bed till 2:30am the night before.. and I woke up at 11am.

and Saturday night I went to bed at 12:30 and got up at 9:30..

It could be the contents of the smoothie? Sugar or caffeine that may have stimulated you. Or the football game... j/k:wink:

If you crave a snack before nodding off, try a banana. I had read or heard that the potassium seems to help in getting a good nights sleep.

Sometimes we consume something which may interfere in the bodily relaxation necessary to sleep - the cold of the smoothie may be the contributor - but....

....sometimes sleep is difficult because we are wrestling with an unresolved issue from the day or week or earlier time before and now are nearing a deadline where a decision needs to be made.

Procrastination is the meanest "sleep stealer" of them all....and I would rather not blame smoothies because I luv luv them!

ya I some days will sleep great. I feel pretty good and things go well,

but more often than not I seem to have issues either with falling to sleep or staying asleep.. or even getting the REM sleep they say you need.

I almost daily will wake up a few times in the morning before my alarm goes off, look up to see if there's light out. and then go back off to sleep..

Try to go recall what you go over when you climb into bed and your head hits the pillow - what do you think of and do you have some outstanding worries that you need to take care of but are unable to at the present time? We all have them but unless we acknowledge them and plan at some time in the future to resolve them, they aren't going to give us rest...

Another thought is perhaps you aren't giving your body a physical workout enough during the day to realize real tiredness so you can relax and let go of the tension you seem to have. Unless you are a rather hyper person and if so, there are some easy repetitive phrases you can use to bore yourself to sleep....

I actually for the last oh 18 years have been listening to old radio shows.. first on radio then I burned CD's and now on my ipod that i connect to a radio.. and they go all night.

the only times I don't listen to them is when I'm sleeping in my bed with a woman or in their bed.

it allows me to focus on something so that my mind doesnt' wander.

cause I do tend to think about all sorts of stuff.

Well I appreciate what you are describing - some nights I wish I could take my head off and park it on the night table...it won't shut up! Even when it finally does I have no idea what made things turn off and let me sleep. I understand you have a busy mind which is great in real life but you rob yourself of essential rest when you let it control your sleep patterns...

I think "boring" is the only thing which might help - something like a mantra you can literally bore yourself with - like standing in a long line at a wedding shaking hands and greeting people you will never see again, saying nice things you don't mean hahaha.....you'll think of something ......you are a bright spark - that is your problem and what a lovely problem it is.....enjoy it while you learn to tame it a bit to suit you.

I think you set yourself up for alertness as soon as you prepare to go to sleep. Stop worrying about whether you will fall asleep and think of more peaceful activities like walking on a beach or sitting in a comfortable chair listening to some great peaceful music.

If you keep "daring" yourself to sleep - you are using energy you don't need to introduce to the situation.

You woke up at 11AM, had a one hour sleep, and went to bed at 11PM? You really need us to tell you why you had a bad sleep when you'd only been awake for 11hours out of the day? You had a bad sleep because you went to bed before you were actually tired, and got up when your body wanted you to still be in bed. It doesn't take much for your body to decide 'hey, he slept til eleven yesterday, I liked that, let's make him do it again!'

Yeah, and take note of the times:

the reason I had a nap btw, was that I didn't get to bed till 2:30am the night before.. and I woke up at 11am.
and Saturday night I went to bed at 12:30 and got up at 9:30..

It's truly a rough life when you're averaging 9 hours of sleep per night.
