RE: What Bono has to say

Actaully several celebrities have been to Africa, including Sudan. Some of them have been shot at. They give their time and their money. They talk to aid workers, teachers, politicians...you know, the people who have some perspective on what is happening and what is needed.

I think you should admit that it is time to give them some credit.

Look it up yourself, Blue.

You know that Bono has been there. You know that Geldoff has been there. If you watched the concert on the weekend, you know the bass player from the Barenaked Ladies has been there. If you'd been watching The Hour on CBC you'd have seen a couple Canadian bands that made the trip. The list is a very long one....that's just off the top of my head.

Now tell me...are you going to give credit where credit is due, or are you going to sit there and whine about your taxes?

You have Google, Blue. If I give you links you'll just make up some crock of shit about how the source is no good. The truth is that you're just afraid that a tiny percentage of your money is going to go to somebody besides you. tough titty.

Too bad you cannot provide details when you need them. As usual. Your opinions mean nothing, facts mean everything. When you get facts on this, get back to me. Until then, STFU.

Shut the f*ck up yourself, Blue. You haven't got a f*cking clue what you are talking about. You lose, my man. You know how much money it cost to put on those conserts last weekend? The bands weren't paid, they donated their time. Most of them paid their own way to the shows too. You do anything like that?

The fact remains that many celebrities have been to Africa and have met with people there. There is footage, and you can likely find it on The Hour's website, of a band getting shot at in Sudan.

Those are facts, dickwad...not my opinion.

Oh gee, a bunch of people who make a lot of money put on a show for free. You want to bet that most of them claim it as a charitable deduction? Neil Young does not need my sympathy about that, although I am glad to hear he is recovering from his stroke. I do like Neil Young.

You cannot provide links, thats okay. I have not seen Bon Jovi( who I really like musically) in the Sudan. I have not seen any of these so-called samaritans feeding the poor from a soup pot in any African country. I have seen footage of extravagant palaces, automobiles, planes, etc. for the ruling elite of several of these countries. I wonder who is benefitting from the foreign aid. Gee, I know.

Can you say Idi Amin? How much foreign aid went to Uganda during his time in power? How much reached the people it was supposed to reach? NONE..REPEAT...NONE.

Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. You ignore history at your own peril.

You haven't even been following the issue, that's obvious by your virtriolic and uninformed lunatic ravings. You don't know what the hell you are talking about and you don't care because of your own greed. I suspect if Africa was full white Christians your tune would be a little different.

Come on, Blue...tell us the truth. If those were little blue-eyed, blonde-haired Christians, you'd be singing a different tune, wouldn't you?

?????????

When will you understand the the bulk of the foreign aid does not get to the people it is supposed to help? As a leftist, surely you must support the money going to the people who need it. Or are you secretly supportive of the corrupt and despotic regimes in most of the African countries:

Of course you are, you support the corrup and despotic regimes in Canada.

Now it is clear, export the corruption, sleaze, and thievery from Canada to other third world countries so they have an example to follow.

RE: What Bono has to say

When will you understand that the issues being raised include that? When will you understand that western governments, corporations, and institutions like the World Bank and IMF are complicit in the corruption?

You're too greedy to get it. All you see is the money. You don't know the issue. You didn't even know there was one before about a week ago. So now all you can do is yell and scream that a rock star is trying to steal your money. It's ridiculous.

Here, maybe this will quiet you down a bit. On February 17th the CPC, BQ, and NDP sent a letter to Paul Martin telling him to give more aid to Africa. See that? Your party was in there too. Had you been following this issue, you could have been bragging how the Conservatives were doing their part. You never knew about the letter though. Don't believe me? Look it up.

It is not really paranoia if they are really out to get you

WTF are you talking about? Live 8? Of course I knew about it. A rock star stealing my money? When did I say that? All I said was to have some accountability in our foreign aid. If you disagree with that, then you have the problem, not me. We give money, we damn well better be sure where it is going. Or do you really like gold faucets and toilets? You are ridiculous.

I just may look it up, but I will be willing to bet that the CPC advocates responsible and accountable foreign aid (I know they do, I have seen their policy).

@Blue:

Any fool with a television can see the commericals showing people in the public eye, including performers in Africa doing various things. "Aid" is not the only cause.....woman's rights, the diamond trade, feed the children of course and education are just a few things they are using their name to gain attention.

If people don't know about it (awareness), they won't feel compelled to help in any way shape or form. If individuals do not feel inclinded to do anything privately, our government will do it for us. If you don't want to give extra because you feel you are being ripped off, collect some cash and go there yourself.

Bono doesn't have the authority to dictate to Paul Martin and Canada what they should or should not be doing. That is their business.

RE: What Bono has to say

Bono has as much right to influence Canadian policy as the CATO Institute does. More actually because the CATO Institute lies. They are still promoting the "Africa is full of corrupt dictators" lie, for instance. That 2/3's of the governments in Africa are democratically elected...many having been re-elected...doesn't matter to them.

Who would you rather have trying to influence your government, ITN? Some rock stars who have nothing to personally gain, or a bunch of corporate honchos looking to enrich themselves.

I am not opposed to aid, but I am opposed to just dumping money at something without accountability. Why is that such a hard concept for the left to accept? Anytime someone wants accountability, the same old "You are against aid" statement comes out. All I suggest is to make sure that the money reaches the starving guy on the street, not to give another despot dictator another palace with gold plated toilets. Surely this cannot be a bad thing???

RE: What Bono has to say

Nobody is against accountability though, Blue. Nobody on the left is promoting repeating the mistakes of the past either. That is a gross misrepresentation that has no basis in fact.

Those mistakes include propping up corrupt regimes for political reasons and tying aid to the profits of our corporations, btw. The arguments coming out of rightwing think tanks and the mouths of rightwing politicians support not only repeating those mistakes, but compounding them.
