On Monday night (September 19) at 8pm (8.30pm NT) CBC will air John A: Birth of a Country. It's a two hour political thriller starring Shawn Doyle as John A. Macdonald, and just check out the resemblance below. Peter Outerbridge stars as George Brown with David La Haye as Georges-Étienne Cartier and Patrick McKenna as Alexander Galt.

John A: Birth of a Country is all about the passionate struggle between Macdonald, leader of the Conservative Party, and the fiercely determined Brown, leader of the opposition, which would become the Liberal Party. Both of the men spurred on by hugely different visions for the fututre of Canada... and a deep hatred for each other.

Set in the mid 1800s - '56-'64 to be precise - the English of Upper Canada (now Ontario) and the French of Lower Canada (now Quebec) battle it out to see who will change the shape of Canada's future, with the United States keeping a close eye on the situation, ready to pounce.

The fascinating struggle between these two centres on many of the key questions that still asked in Canada today: What does the military mean to us? How do we define sovereignty? What responsibility do we have to each other?

"I like the fact that Canada is an independent nation," said producer and six time Gemini winner Bernie Zukerman, "and it gives me great pleasure to tell the stories of Canada and celebrate the remarkable men who made this country possible."

CBC Live - TV & Film - John A: Birth of a Country

I watched this back when it was first aired and was so impressed I watched it again tonight. CBC does get some things right and this drama gets top marks.

A303: Highway to the Sun

The A303 is the road that passes Stonehenge on the way to the beaches of Devon and Cornwall. On the way, it whisks drivers through 5,000 years of remarkable moments in British history. And it's the star of this film made for armchair travellers and history lovers.

Writer Tom Fort drives its 92-mile length in a lovingly-restored Morris Traveller. Along the way, he has many adventures - he digs up the 1960s master plan for the A303's dreams of superhighway status; meets up with a Neolithic traveller who knew the road like the back of his hand; gets to know a section of the Roman 303; uncovers a medieval murder mystery; and discovers what lies at the end of the Highway to the Sun.

One of BBC Four's most popular programmes, it has been repeated umpteen times since its was originally broadcast in 2011.
