Arctic Monkeys - "Teddy Picker" (2007)

The Sheffield rockers scored a No1 UK his with this in which frontman Alex Turner quoted a lyric from a 1982 Duran Duran song. Can you recognise it?

R.E.M. - "Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars)"
1982

An early song from four young Athens, Georgia, rockers who were hoping to one day make it into the big time.

And they did just that - selling over 90 million albums worldwide.

New Order - "Regret" (1993)

New Order have an unusual and tragic history as one band transforming into another band.

In 1980, Joy Division vocalist Ian Curtis hanged himself in his kitchen. A combination of severe epilepsy (which he would sometimes suffer on stage due to the strobe lighting), an upcoming tour of America (which he was convinced would flop and he was scared of an epileptic fit whilst performing) and the breakup of his marriage lead to Curtis hanging himself in his kitchen just before the Manchester band's American tour.

After Curtis's death, Joy Division reformed itself as New Order.

In 1993, New Order reached No4 in the UK and No6 in Canada with this...

Erasure - "Drama!" (1989)

The London electropoppers reached No4 in the UK and No10 in the US with this at the end of probably the best decade for pop music, although being born in 1981 I barely remember it.

The men shouting "GUILTY!" in the background are the Scottish rockers The Jesus and Mary Chain, who were recording in the studio next door...

Ed Sheeran - "Azizam" (2025)

Born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, but raised down in Suffolk, Ed Sheeran has already sold over 200 million records worldwide, making him one of the world's best selling artists in history, which is all the more incredible considering he's only 34.

The video for "Azizam" - his brand new single - was filmed across the United States and at his favourite football club Ipswich Town.

Ultravox - "Vienna" (1981)

The English/Scottish band reached No2 in the UK with this.

The song originally had slightly different lyrics. Vocalist Midge Ure didn't like the song originally and in the recording studio he proclaimed "This means nothing to me!", at which point the German producer Conny Plank shouted out "Well sing that then!", so Ure did, and the song became a massive hit.

It was kept off the UK No1 spot by "Shaddap You Face" by the cheesy American singer Joe Dolce.

In 2017, Ure declined an opportunity to meet Dolce, saying: "I've had 40 years of people talking about Joe 'Bloody' Dolce and I don't want to spend what I've got left talking about when I met him."

Still, Ultravox got what is now a classic hit in an era of great pop music

Electric Six - "Danger! High Voltage" (2002)

Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, the band are known for having British musical influence within their songs and for performing in British accents. Many people probably think they're British.

The Anglophile band has also performed with a plethora of British bands, including Queen.

Not only that, but Michigan is almost exactly the same size as the UK!

This was a No2 hit in the UK in 2002.

Savage Garden - "To the Moon and Back"
(1997)

The Brisbane, Queensland, pop duo - vocalist Darren Hayes and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Jones - had a No1 in their native Australia, a No3 in Britain and No4 in New Zealand with this.

Hayes now lives in California with his British husband after previously living in London and Jones has swapped sunny Queensland for rainy Essex, where he now resides...

OMC - "How Bizarre" (1995)

Hailing from New Zealand's largest city Auckland, OMC had a No1 in Australia, Austria, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the US - and a No5 in the UK - with this in 1995.

OMC stands for "Otara Millionaires Club", a tongue in cheek reference to the fact that Otara is one of the poorest suburbs of Auckland.

The lead singer, Pauly Fuemana, who died in 2010, was half-Maori.

Pulp - "Spike Island" (2025)

Formed in 1978, the Sheffield Britpop band fronted by Jarvis Cocker are famous for their 1995 hits "Common People" and "Sorted for E's and Whizz" at the height of the Britpop Era, along with other Britpop bands like Blur and Oasis.

Now, despite the fact they are "getting on" somewhat, they are back with this brand new single and their first studio album since 2001.

The new single's video uses AI to make photos of the band taken 30 years ago come alive...

New studio album "More" is released 6th June...
