Mysterious metal object removed from beach near Taylor Swift's home

WESTERLY, R.I. — Questions are still swirling after a mysterious object was removed from the waters off a Rhode Island beach.
The circular metal object was taken out of the waters off East Beach in Westerly by an excavator Thursday, and it’s much bigger than originally thought.
Peter Brockmann, president of the East Beach Association, tells The Westerly Sun he hopes someone who sees a media report about the object knows what it is.
Before it was removed, the best guess was it is what is called an acoustic Doppler profiler to monitor currents. That device is about 4.5 feet (1.37 metres) long. But the object removed Thursday is about twice that size.
The object was discovered last month at the beach near singer Taylor Swift’s oceanfront mansion.

Husker Du drummer, singer Grant Hart dies of cancer

MINNEAPOLIS — Widespread commercial success largely eluded Grant Hart and his pioneering indie-rock trio, Husker Du. But the hard-working band emerged as one of the heavyweights of Minneapolis’ burgeoning 1980s music scene, and was credited with inspiring genre-defining acts that followed, including Nirvana and the Pixies.
Hart, who died Wednesday after being diagnosed with cancer, was the drummer and co-vocalist for the band he formed with bassist Greg Norton and guitarist-singer Bob Mould in 1978 in St. Paul.
The loud, hard-edged trio toured relentlessly and ruled the local music scene, along with Prince and The Replacements.
“They called it punk rock. I always thought it was like this wall of sound,” former Twin Cities rock critic P.D. Larson said Thursday. “As they grew, there was definitely some melodic components that weren’t immediately evident. They quickly transcended that hard-core label.”
Husker Du, named after a Scandinavian board game, “Do you remember?” (Norton said he uttered the phrase as Hart was making up silly lyrics to a song), began as a punk outfit before moving into alternative rock.
The band released a string of critically acclaimed albums before signing with major label Warner Bros. Records. They released two more albums before disbanding in 1987, and Hart later pursued a solo career. Despite never experiencing huge commercial success, Husker Du was seen as a major influence on several acts that did.
Singer-songwriter Ryan Adams was among those artists, tweeting Thursday: “Your music saved my life. It was with me the day I left home. It’s with me now. Travel safely to the summerlands.”
The 56-year-old Hart died late Wednesday at a Minneapolis hospital from complications of liver cancer and hepatitis C, his wife, Brigid McGough, said in an email to Minnesota Public Radio’s The Current. The band’s record label also confirmed the death to The Associated Press.
“It was completely unexpected so it is a huge shock,” McGough wrote.
On Thursday, Mould recalled how he met Hart in the fall of 1978, at a nearly empty St. Paul record store: Hart was clerking and the PA system was blaring punk rock.
“The next nine years of my life was spent side-by-side with Grant,” Mould wrote on his Facebook page, describing Hart as “a gifted visual artist, a wonderful story teller, and a frighteningly talented musician.”
“We (almost) always agreed on how to present our collective work to the world. When we fought about the details, it was because we both cared. The band was our life. It was an amazing decade,” Mould wrote.
In a separate post, written to Hart, Norton said: “It was a wild ride, great times, bad times, through all of it, you were my friend first.”
Hart’s friends had known for months that he was ill with cancer. His last public performance was July 1 in Minneapolis. Hart thought he was going to play with friends but arrived to a surprise tribute being held in his honour.
The event featured longtime collaborators and friends, including Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum and Lori Barbero of Babes in Toyland. Barbero organized the event, asking Hart’s fellow musicians to play his songs.
“It was an honour for everybody to be under the same room and spend time with each other — and especially him. It was a very wonderful night,” she said.
Record label Numero Group announced this month that a three-disk box set of Husker Du’s early work, “Savage Young Du,” would be released in November.
Associated Press writer Patrick Mairs contributed to this report from Philadelphia.

WATCH: Marilyn Manson injured after concert prop falls on him

Marilyn Manson was stretchered off stage following an accident during his concert in New York on Saturday night.
Manson was performing a rendition of song Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) during his gig at the Hammerstein Ballroom, when a large prop featuring a pair of gun motifs attached, fell directly on top of him.
From grainy footage captured by one fan, it appears that Manson was trying to climb the steel structure but it wasn’t stable enough, and toppled over and crushed him.
Several people rushed to his aid, including opening act Alice Glass, who was watching from the side of the stage.
It appeared to take some time to remove the metal structure from Manson, real name Brian Hugh Warner, and he was immediately carried off the set on a stretcher - unable to continue his performance.
A representative for Manson confirmed that he was being treated in hospital but gave no further details of how seriously he had been injured or his condition.
It’s not been a good few months for the 48-year-old, as his father Hugh Warner died in July, just days before he was due to hit the road for a series of festival gigs and summer shows.
Manson had shared a close bond with his dad, who often joined him on the road, and he recently confessed it was “tough” returning to work to perform for fans when he would have preferred to take his time to grieve.

California schools warn flutes could be tainted with semen

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. — Parents were warned Saturday that a music teacher with a non-profit group may have handed out flutes to schoolchildren that were tainted with his own semen.
A state and federal investigation was under way into whether youngsters at schools around Southern California may have received tainted flutes.
The Los Angeles Unified School District said it was co-operating in an investigation of alleged “inappropriate sexual conduct involving a musical performer” that affected at least 13 school districts.
One LAUSD school may have been involved, the district said in a statement.
Several other Southern California districts notified parents by email on Friday and Saturday that a performer associated with the non-profit group Flutes Across the World was being investigated.
“The performer distributes a flute-like musical instrument made of PVC pipe or bamboo to students during a music lesson, and the allegation is that he contaminated some of these instruments with semen,” Joan Lucid, superintendent of the Saugus Union School District, notified parents on Saturday, the Orange County Register reported.
The performer was not immediately identified.
Messages seeking comment from John Zeretzke, founder of Flutes Across the World, were not immediately returned Saturday night.
Parents in some districts were urged to put the flutes in paper bags and turn them in to authorities for testing.
KNBC-TV reported that a parent identified only as Nate went to the police station in Fountain Valley on Friday night to turn in a flute given to his child, who attends Courreges Elementary School.
“It’s disgusting, it’s unreal, you can’t even really fathom it,” another parent, who wished to not be named, told the station. “It made me sick to my stomach.”
Flutes Across the World has provided musical presentations at several local school districts. The Fullerton School District said fourth- through sixth-graders at two schools had the program in the 2016-2017 school year.
Presenters at such programs “are never alone with children” but the performer won’t return to the district out of “an abundance of caution,” the district said on its website.
The district said the music program was sponsored by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County.
The society sponsored Flutes Across the World to bring the program to six classrooms in three years, spokesman Chantel Uchida told the Register.
“We’re so shocked and disgusted,” Uchida said of the allegations. “We will be stepping back from this. There are no plans to continue it in the future.”

Nova Scotia beer bandit inspires Cape Breton band to write song
THE CANADIAN PRESS

SYDNEY, N.S. — A purported Cape Breton beer bandit named Terry whose alleged exploits became famous in a Facebook post last week has inspired a namesake song that has itself now gone viral.
It started last week when a Facebook account with the name Ronnie Talbot posted in the Cape Breton Rant Room about someone — identified by a Tim Hortons worker as ’Terry from the Pier’ — who allegedly stole beer out of the bed of his truck while he was inside the coffee shop using the washroom.
The authenticity of the post has not been verified, but it has nevertheless been widely shared and garnered hundreds of colourful comments — and even prompted a crowdfunding effort to replace the “24 of Keith’s” that has raised $340 more than its $60 goal by Thursday morning.
Now, Cape Breton band Pretty Archie has put their own creative take on the alleged beer burglary.
In video posted to Facebook that amassed 78,000 views in 16 hours, two members of the group are shown singing a folk-style song in a hotel room called “Terry stole the beer.”
The band finishes the tune with a plea in true Cape Breton fashion: “Terry b’y, do the right thing. Give the beer back.”

Just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong, when I thought I was right
It's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all
I could say day, you'd say night
Tell me it's black when I know that it's white
It's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all
I could leave but I won't go
Though my heart might tell me so
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
So why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
It's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all
Turning me on, turning me off
Making me feel like I want too much
Living with you's just putting me through it all of the time
Running around, staying out all night
Taking it all instead of taking one bite
Living with you's just putting me through it all of the time
I could leave but I won't go
It'd be easier I know
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
But why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
It's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all
Truth is I love you
More that I wanted to
There's no point in trying to pretend
There's been no-one who
Makes me feel like you do
Say we'll be together till the end
I could leave but I won't go
It'd be easier I know
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
But why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
It's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all
Just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong, when I thought I was right
It's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all
I could say day, you'd say night
Tell me it's black when I know that it's white
It's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all - that's all
