What was old is new again: Ron MacLean never thought he'd be back as host of Hockey Night in Canada
THE CANADIAN PRESS

Ron MacLean likely isn’t on Strombo’s Christmas card list.
Or vice versa.
MacLean, who was returned to his position as host of Hockey Night in Canada after two years in a lesser role, confirmed to the Canadian Press that he didn’t have much of a relationship with his HNIC replacement, George Stroumboulopoulos.
The two, MacLean said, never clicked as friends despite sharing a common interest in hockey.
“It was always a bit quiet on that front, MacLean said. “I don’t think there was ever a relationship built.”
MacLean told CP that he sent Stroumboulopoulos a text message after hearing he’d been let go by HNIC and “never heard back.”
Sportsnet president Scott Moore, who tabbed Stroumboulopoulos for the host role with HNIC, agreed with MacLean’s assessment.
“The connection just wasn’t there — certainly not for lack of trying,” Moore told CP.
With Stroumboulopoulos at the helm, HNIC ratings have slid over the last two seasons. Ratings were historically low during the Stanley Cup playoffs last season, in part because no Canadian teams qualified.
But Sportsnet expects ratings to climb with MacLean fronting the show again. He held the job for 30 years before giving way to Stroumboulopoulos, a face Sportsnet thought would help attract a younger audience.
When the change was made two years ago — in addition to his gig with Don Cherry, MacLean was shifted to Sunday night’s Hometown Hockey — it caused a not insignificant stir.
“You understand the fuss because you’ve been on ’Hockey Night in Canada’ for 30 years,” MacLean said, “but I just fell into a show where everyone was so nice. It was a godsend. I feel like that show was the guardian angel that rescued me.”
Of course, MacLean is happy to be back in his familiar chair, which he will occupy while continuing with his HomeTown Hockey job. After all, he never expected to be back hosting HNIC.
“Of course not,” he said. “If anything, I had almost put in my head the idea that it’s going to be time to look for something outside of the hockey arena. The one thing I was grateful for was there was never a moment of, ’How could they do this to me?’ I never felt that emotion once. I just felt like at my age it made sense that you were going to be part of changes.”

mclean will be fine back in the helm again, he does it well, obviously everyone wants him there, he is
happy to be there, so all is well.

strombo was also fine there, learning on the job just as mclean did, he is a smart guy, but it didn't
bring in more young people as they had hoped, so they are back to mclean, and that will work too.

there was no animosity between strombo and mclean, both are good people, strombo was probably working
around the clock to be prepared to deliver quality material, and he did that, and as mclean said, he
just accepted, thought it was because of his age, and looked forward to what he would do next, neither
probably had any time to build a real friendship with each other, and maybe strombo felt bad, having
replaced someone who did the job for 30 years, I know I would if I were in that position.

I wonder now where strombo will surface, he is a very intelligent and talented man, and will find his
way, and we will see him again soon, I'm sure.

I love that new piece that mclean does about 'Canada and Saturday night hockey', it is very touching
and a great emotional look at our signature sport.

good luck to both of them

I am really happy that Ron is back, nothing at against Strombo as I too think he is great broadcaster and will land somewhere on his feet with the talent he has, but Ron is the guy I have listened to for decades and to me he really is the voice of hockey. I share your love of the new piece he does about Saturday night hockey - it brings back so many memories of my family gathering around the TV on that night ready to cheer on our team. I don't often laud the CBC but when it comes to sports and especially hockey they seem to keep getting it right. Welcome back Ron .............looking forward to many more memorable Saturday nights.

I call BS! Ten-year-olds don't teach.

I suggest you watch some vids of Sid the Kid when he was that age, he may not have been teaching but he was putting on a clinic never-the-less.

is that piece done by cbc, I thought it was all owned and run by 'sportsnet' now.
I also thought that any hockey that we see on CBC is borrowed from sportsnet, and
not the work of CBC, for convenience of all to be able to see hockey in
Canada, I suppose there are still some who can't get sportsnet, I really don't
know, but the games do jump back and forth between cbc and sportsnet on
Saturdays, hockey night in Canada, but I didn't think cbc has any power any
more, it all belongs to sportsnet.

You are right, talloola and I was wrong. Rogers Sportsnet owns all the rights to Hockey Night In Canada and is responsible for all content. Thank you for the correction.
