The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation has decided to make a one-time exception for a single dad, awarding him a 50/50 jackpot of $67,692.50 after he missed the deadline to claim the prize.
Clayton Hinkey, from Sedgewick, about 180 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, had taken his four-year-old son to an Oilers game against the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 16 as a birthday present, but when his young son started to get fussy the pair left the game in the second period.
A volunteer who sold him a 50/50 ticket at the game said he could check his ticket online.
Hinkey didn’t remember to check his ticket until Thursday, four days after the game. When he did, he realized he had the winning ticket for the $67,692.50 prize.
Hinkey’s joy was quickly soured, however, when he called the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and was told the window to claim his prize had already closed. Under new rules, Oilers fans must collect their prize by 4 p.m. two days following the game.
After hearing Hinkey’s impassioned pleas for mercy, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation – in concert with the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission – has decided to make a one-time exemption for the single dad, giving him the $67,692.50 prize.
Clayton Hinkey found out too late he won an Oilers' 50/50 draw after leaving Sunday's game early with his young son.
