I don't think that the soldiers should be searching everyone. Just people that look suspicious.

What's your definition of suspicious? Jeans, T-shirt and a mohawk? Business suit with a bulging middle? Flowery house dress? Sitting on the sidewalk with a sign that says 'Will suicide bomb for food'?

We have a large amount of soldiers in Afghanistan helping the Afghanis, but who is here to protect us? Who would be here to help keep order and protect Canadians if those terrorists went forward with their plans?

You could enlist.

RE: Canada's Defence

I don't think that Canada would indeed require a large presence of the Canadian Forces in order to address any situations which would arise from the execution of terrorist acts within Canada (knocking on wood, of course). I would suggest that the presence of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police would in fact be quite adequate.

Aren't the Canadian Forces better trained for a terrorist attack than the RCMP?

RE: Terrorist Acts

You may be correct.

However, I would suggest that the R.C.M.P. would likely have the capacity to respond to such an act in a much quicker manner than the Canadian Forces could. By the time that a terrorist act had occurred, I doubt there would be anything that the Forces could do, other than join in efforts to restrict damage, and assist in reconstruction and search-and-rescue-type efforts.

Well, you're right on that. There are alot more RCMP officers compared to troops in the Canadian Forces and the RCMP would probably be able to handle it better because there are more of them.

Jon, please tell me you're joking, if not I've come to the conclusion you're a moron. This is not a flame, I'm not claiming you actually are a moron, but that's how you will always appear to me now.

and Canada does have troops that are here and not in Afghanistan, and if a terrorist attack is occurring they will respond, but what you're suggesting sounds like a straight out police state.

We have 28,000 National Police so that is roughly the O.P.P the RCMP, and the Quebec Police, then you aid city police I don't know roughly 15,000 more. Then 60,000 regulars and 25,000 reservists minus the 2,300 and others on overseas missions. That is still over 100,000 personnel in Canada so you and your big Mac is safe for the time being.

Of course they are. The military goes in shooting and kills the terrorists, the RCMP have to do sensitivity training, ask a bunch of questions, claim diversity is great, have race quotas, and negate the fact we are at war with Islamofacism.

Send the troops in I say.

Actually we're not. The only branch of the Canadian Forces geared towards counter-terrorism is JTF-2, and it's rather small and wide spread right now. JTF-2, as you may or may not know, was spawned in '93 after the RCMP shut down SERT (Special Emergency Response Team). They transfered all FEDERAL counter-terrorism operations to JTF-2. How the RCMP still maintain ERT (i'm sure you can figure out what that stands for) in all the major cities in Canada. They are, without a doubt, better than the general Canadian Forces soldier at counter-terrorism. The best thing you could expect of the CF is some soldiers that are heli-ops trained, jump trained, and skilled in room clearing. We don't practice any actual "counter-terroism" stuff.

I would like to thank Mogz for having given us such an informative post.

I would like to add to the points above that, even if the Canadian Forces were better equipped to address acts of terrorism, I would contend that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police would be in a better position to respond to a terrorist act in a much faster manner, than would any particular segment of the Forces.
