The Mulroney years were building years but Muldoon's old style political boss personality has tainted our recollection of them. Contrast the accomplishments of the Mulroney years with the do-absolutely-****ing-nothing Chretien years. Can you remember a Chretien accomplishment?
well, we did build up a ton of debt.

Sure, he sold what was left of our souls to the Chinese. He wore an army helmet backwards in Bosnia. He tried to pretend Afghanistan was only training and support. He had a thing for choking protesters and giving them the pepper off his plate. There's much I remember Chretien doing. Nothing really good, but plenty of bad.

He did keep us out of Iraq.

But we're there now, but its only training and support under Trudeau.

I'm an old guy. I was in Mr. Trudeau's Navy in the 70s.

I was army in the 80's and 90's here, my brother joined in the 70's. All three branches took a kicking under Trudeau.

Read James Hogan's "Voyage from Yesteryear." The thesis is that a rich man, but not rich enough to send an interstellar expedition of breathing folk, sent human ova, sperm, and a whole bunch of robots to Alpha Centauri. Without the hatreds of their forbears being pounded into them, they set up a just, rational, libertarian anarchy.

Then, after 200 years or so, the Earthlings arrived, complete with executives, politicians, preachers, and of course, soldiers.

Sounds like an interesting read. I might just do that, once I tear through my 300 plus to read stack.

Don't worry, I read a lot, sometimes three books a week.

Nope. The Liberal Prime Minister is not a centrist, he's a left wing pandering socialist engineer. Or his wife is. She's sort of his Dick Cheney, albeit stunningly beautiful, but mutually destructive.

You give him too much credit. Many of his ideas just make so little sense that I'm sure many intelligent leftists are left scratching their heads in confusion.

and that's why the liberal Prime Minister buys missiles and forces pipelines down peoples throats?

all canadian parties are centrist.

if you think the NDP are lefties you obviously have never met a real leftie.

The NDP are so far out in left field they make the Conservatives look left of center. Ask your socials teacher tomorrow.

The Liberals have been fiscal conservatives since Chretien/Martin at the very least.

Remember they were the ones who created budget surpluses and paid down government debt - which is the very definition of fiscal conservatism.

Trudeau himself is little more than a figure head in terms of economics.

The Liberals have never been fiscally consertvative. That's why they are called Liberal. Always liberal with taxpayers money. They don't know the meaning of the word conserve when related to money. And creten did not balance the budget. He stole from CPP and EI to make it look like he did.

Couldn't an Independent be a viable option even if they aren't from the Big 3?

Not really the way our system of governance is set up. You would need 100+ Independents and then you would have to get them to agree on something.

Intelligent leftist- must be a rare breed. Never seen one in BC.

Left or right, wise politicians have become mighty rare as of late.

And when one comes along, he stands no chance of winning. Just look at my voting record, not one candidate I've voted for has ever won yet, and I've voted for NDP, PC, Green, and even Libertarian candidates in the past. Strangely enough, I've never voted for a Liberal candidate yet. I have nothing against the party per se, but I guess an alternative candidate has always outshone a Liberal one in each riding I've voted for thus far. Luck i suppose.

Party politics is a big problem. Always has been but we never had the instant access to information until recently. I don't recall ever having an independent in any riding I lived in but some Fringe parties, mostly left wackos and once in a while and Christian party. I once voted for the pirate party because the candidate was the only one at the local all candidates meeting that told the truth. Said if elected they would Rob us blind just like everyone else.
