Wal-Mart to film gun sales in bid to fight crime

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, unveiled plans on Monday to film its gun sales in the United States and create a computerized log of purchases in a bid to stop guns falling into the wrong hands.
Wal-Mart, which is the largest seller of firearms in the United States, agreed a 10-point code, which also includes rigid inventory controls, with a bipartisan coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns led by New York's Michael Bloomberg.
The retailer said it will develop a first-of-its-kind computerized crime gun trace log that will flag purchases by customers who have previously bought guns later recovered in crimes.
"Wal-Mart currently uses a strong point of sale system," said J.P. Suarez, senior vice president and chief compliance officer of Wal-Mart. "This code is a way for us to fine-tune the things we're already doing and further strengthen our standards. We hope other retailers will join us."
The Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership is designed to strengthen the points in the gun purchasing system that criminals have exploited in the past, Wal-Mart and the Mayors Against Illegal Guns said.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, 46 percent of its criminal gun trafficking investigations involved cases in which someone who is not legally allowed to purchase a firearm does so through the use of a proxy, known as a straw buyer.

Good old Wal-Mart where you can buy morals and family values bulk ethics and bargain religion.
The family that owns Wal-Mart is richer than the one-hundred and twenty million people on the bottom of the class system in the good old USA. They do nothing for nobody but themselves, they are what should not be and will not be some day soon.

I can't relate to buying the Fisher Price train set, the flat of Budweiser and the Smith and Wesson, all at the same checkout.

Although the scheme by Wal-Mart sounds honourable, I doubt this will have much effect on reducing gun crimes.

Interesting read on 'straw buyers'. They are also active in the real estate market, some say contributing to the latest sub-prime fiasco.

Bulk Sales by Straw Purchasers
The linchpin of the system of bulk purchases is “straw purchasing,” a practice
encouraged by relatively lax gun laws in a number of states. Typically, guns are
moved from the legal to the illegal market by criminal entrepreneurs, gun
traffickers. But, since felons cannot pass federal background checks to purchase
guns, traffickers hire people who can pass background checks to stand in for
them to make purchases. These standins are called “straw purchasers” or
“straw buyers.”
Traffickers often accompany their straw buyers into the gun shops, point out the
guns they wish purchased, provide cash and watch as their straw buyers make
buys. A typical multiple handgun purchase made at a gun store can take a
matter of minutes, and there are no limits on the number of handguns that may
be purchased at any one time. Once the purchase is complete, the trafficker and
the straw buyer exit the store, the latter receives a service fee and the former
takes the handguns, to which he cannot be tied, as he was not the legal
purchaser. The handguns have now passed from the legal to the illegal market
and the trafficker will now sell his illgotten guns on street corners to thugs,
across kitchen tables to drug gang members and on playgrounds to violent
teens. A report in the April 18 Philadelphia Daily News, “Illegally Shot: Strawbuying’s
Main Way Guns Get on City Streets” tells the story of a Camden, NJ
trafficker using a Philadelphia straw buyer to make multiple purchasers of
multiple guns.

This is dumb. Guns are for killing people. Why try to fight it. It is the Americans people right to bear arms. If we just do a better job at the borders then they will only be able to shoot themselves. Doesn't matter who Walmart videoed buying a gun.

I agree 100%. But people will do as they please or whatever. What bothers me was the fiasco in Windsor and I would like them to change the blue star to a red Maple Leaf like so many other U.S. based companies have done out of respect for the country that they are making money in.
