Costumes at the polls, niqabs and Canadians' voting rights

The recent images of voters showing up at voting stations in different face masks, head coverings and costumes reveal how some Canadians fail to live up to the lessons of our history and the true democratic values enshrined in our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

It is clear that these voters are trying to make a statement about their views and feelings in response to Elections Canada’s policy, in effect for several years now, to allow some Muslim women to vote while wearing their niqab as long as they sign a formal oath regarding their eligibility.

By attempting to ridicule this policy, these voters actually help confirm a unique quality of our voting system: What one wears on one’s face for religious or spurious reasons does not automatically prevent one from voting. The system has ways to require voter identification to avoid fraud.

But by wearing such disguises, these voters do more than trivialize a woman’s faith-based choice and reinforce negative attitudes about Muslims in general and Muslim women in general. They almost make a mockery of our hard-fought right to vote and the compelling duty of each and every person, as well as that of our Parliament, to protect not only our voting rights, but also two core principles of our voting system: integrity and accessibility.

Canadian history is replete with struggles of different classes of people to obtain the right to vote, particularly women, Aboriginal peoples, racial minorities (notably, Chinese and Japanese Canadians), prisoners, people with disabilities, naturalized citizens (in the 1995 Quebec referendum), and more recently, Canadian expatriates. Through passionate social and political actions, and costly litigation, Canadians have sought to overcome all kinds of barriers, physical and legal, to the exercise of their constitutional right to vote.

So you think the veil is on par with the struggle women and racial groups went through to get the right to vote?

this idiot believes just about anything he sees and as we well know is always in a hurry to be the first to post something. bit of a narcissistic trait in that sociopath. but never really owned his error...simply justified the post 3 hours later after likely being mocked by his fanz.

Guess they just want to make a point! The Court has it wrong and the decision should be over turned. Period.

I have considered making a different point by voting with a mask that looks like an envelope. If people can vote by mail, then my face should not be a concern.

I agree if there is a security concern but it's clear that Conservatives are over stepping their boundaries into ethnic cleansing.

It's a national prejudice that we have so it's not surprising the curmudgeons are getting wedgies over it.

They love wedgies.

I am an old guy and I think there are a lot of voters who need to grow up
Life changes people and attitudes change and we change or well die in
the end. I have talked to a number of young people and I think they have
it right actually. Most I have talked to say what the hell is going on. The
voters are worked up about a head scarf and no one talks about how
veterans are being shafted or post secondary education is so expensive
or what is happening with medicare. They are more informed than some
of us. This costume thing is a distraction trying to create more division
in case someone discovers this government has rung up more debt
than most other governments.

Of course the issues you mention are important but so is Canadian tradition. I wonder how many Muslim women who think covering their faces is so all important care about the issues of veterans, the economy, etc. If the niquab is so unimportant then why the hell don't they take the damned thing off and let us see who they are?

Well said grump.

You are one of the few who haven't succumbed to nonsensically clinging to the past.

Just curious. Are there no acceptable situations for uncovering their faces? Is pledging an oath not up there with please pop this pimple?

If you get past the rhetoric you will see there is a process in place to ensure the identity of the person. They show their face to another female behind closed doors before the ceremony. Add to that all the security checks and identity confirmation are done well in advance of the actual ceremony.

Why can't you and your ilk tell the truth? Why do you need to lie?

Take a look aroiund grump..... it's not the cons that keep bring the niqab up. If it's not that important, then why do left wing ideologs like you and flossy keep posting about it? Why do left wing papers keep writing articles about it?

See this election isn't about traditions or even issues anymore
This election is about a Prime Minister who lost touch with the
people and now they just want to be rid of him. They no longer
care even if we go into deficit as long as we get rid of him.
That I find surprising on the surface. Then I see what has the
folks all worked up. Big business and the wealthy are doing
well and the average guy is not. Then I think of the message
many sent i am going to vote for my own interests. Well the
fact is there are more average guys out there than there are big
businesses and rich folks. When it comes to a ballot we all get
ONE and that equals things up. This is more like a civilized
revolution at it were. Its where the 70% majority want something
different than what the 30% minority wants its called democracy
Head scarfs, and customs are not even part of this we just want
to get rid of what we have because we want something else
I don't care for Trudeau and I won't be voting for him but I prefer
change than to what we have at present so I guess we will see
tomorrow how democracy worked. If the majority elect change
in two opposition parties those who have said Harper won a
government and that's all that matters will have to bow to the
majority Personally I hope they would form a coalition if need be
to Keep Harper from getting even a minority but there is no chance
of that at the moment

I see you changed the subject. Why is that grump? Don't like looking in the mirror to answer a question?
