The Cubans I met that would express an opinion on American tourists
worded it something like this, "They have no issue with Americans, but
only with the American Government and its policies."

If you're civil, polite, respectful, and injecting cash into the Cuban
Economy, you'll get along just fine...American tourists are already in
Cuba, or WoWCuba wouldn't be advising American tourists how to
exchange their USD's before arriving so as not to be penalized for the
actions of their Government.

I bet that before the decision is final that the penalty against US currency will be dropped as well.

I hope this happens soon. I would like to go there myself.

At least the big three corporate welfare auto makers will be able to sell their excess new cars in Cuba since all they drive is used cars there because of America’s embargo since the 1950’s

Those 1950's cars were new when they bought them. I agree though... they will become dinosaurs... a relic of the old guard once the Americans get there.

Wow! No sooner did Obama lift the restrictions than former MLB player Tony Oliva's family visited him from Cuba. Tony was inteviewed by the local ABC news and he said the vast majority of Cubans welcome the change in policy.

Happy days are here again thanks to Democrat Obama!

Hither and yon
I never really understood what the big deal was about the US embargo.
The ONLY country that had an embargo with Cuba was US of A.
Big deal. It's not like the Americans are the only country on the planet.

Go to any Canadian Tire, Walmart, Target or wherever and check where the products are made: India, China, Taiwan and so forth.

Cuba could purchase goods from any other country in the world at will.
German engineering and cars,Russian weaponry, British machining and financial services, Swiss optics and pharmacueticals,French foodstuffs, Canadian and Australian raw materials, Japanese electronics ,Italian designs and so on and so forth.
Really, who needs American stuff that badly after all, most of the stuff is available elsewhere cheaper and some of it is of higher quality than if it were of American manufacture.

So whats the big deal all about anyway?

On the Cuban side, Castro needed a whipping boy and excuse for all Cuba's socialist failures. The Helms-Burton and America provided that.

On the American side, the Americans were so arrogant as to believe that if THEY were not allowed to visit a certain country then it followed that the country in question would automatically wither and die.

Spin and politically influenced crud from both sides is how I saw it.

Americans always could visit Cuba. It is no trouble at all.
They just cannot travel direct.
Drive up to Taranna, park in long term, hop on a daily Cubana flight and Bob's your uncle. Just make sure you never admit to it when questioned by INS.
And for god's sake do not bring a bunch of made in Cuba junk packed in your bags when you return.
Cuban security will not stamp your passport if requested not to do so.
Stock up on Partagas or Cohiba's if you must and take them back to Taranna with you.
Either mail them to yourself from Taranna or go buy and equivelent number of boxes of the cheapest Canadian cigars you can find.
Replace the cheapies with the Cubans. Shrink wrap the box's. Bin the crappy ones.Drive home. No problema.

It presently looks like only American direct relatives of Cubanos will be allowed to travel legally to Cuba under Obamas tenure.

So just go to Canada or Mexico and catch a flight.
Thats what thousands of Americans have been doing for years.

You'll have a gas down there.. On a related note, the fishing is pretty good, just don't pay the exorbitant rates from the formal charters. There are a number of guys down there that will take you out for the entire day for $150-200 plus the cost of beer/rum. Great times and the cash you give these folks goes a reeaallyy long way to help them out.

What I always found was odd is that the end of the island of Cuba is owned by the US, that's where Guantanamo Bay is, yet the US always seemed scared of letting people actually visit Cuba.

The U.S. doesn't actually OWN Guantánamo Bay, but has a very
lopsided freaky lease that I can't see it ever walking away from.

A 1934 the Avery Porko treaty reaffirming the lease granted Cuba
and its trading partners free access through the bay; modified the
lease payment from $2,000 in U.S. gold coins per year, to the 1934
equivalent value of $3,085 in U.S. dollars; and made the lease
permanent unless both governments agreed to break it, or the U.S.
abandoned the base property.

Since the Cuban Revolution, the government under Fidel Castro has
cashed only one of the rent checks from the U.S. government, and
only because of confusion in 1959 in the heady early days of the leftist
revolution. The remaining uncashed checks made out to "Treasurer
General of the Republic" (a position that ceased to exist after the
revolution) are kept in Castro's office stuffed into a desk drawer.

The United States argues that the cashing of the single check signifies
Havana's ratification of the lease — and that ratification by the new
government renders moot any questions about violations of sovereignty
and illegal military occupation.
