The F-35 is a ridiculous plane.

The entire program has been mismanaged so far. The end result appears likely to be a useless aircraft that won't be that stealthy which is a step backwards regarding speed, maneuverability, armaments...

At least according to this expert:

Post
WW2,Lycoming aviation bet big that its seven row, 5,000 hpower radial piston engine was the 'way fo the FUTURE!!!!.'

There was one built .It in the Smisthstonian. Lycoming went bankrupt. Republic Aviation was Bailed out for a while, then merged.

Every tax paying American Should make a point to see it -

Huh?
Max takeoff weight of a Mig 29 Fulcrum is 40,000 pounds, wingspan - 37'3", length - 56'8", cost = (adjusted)just shy of $50 M. The Russian Foxhound is huge. The Mig 35 Fulcrum weighs about 65,500 pounds, length is 62'4", wingspan is 49'2", cost = about $30 M, but it's 5th generation.
Max takeoff weight of a Falcon is 37,500, wingspan - 32'8", length - 49'5", cost = $30.1 M.
The Lightning (35A) weighs 70,000 max TO, length is 51.4', wingspan is 35'. Pricetag is nuts.
And I agree the Migs n Sus are vicious.

Not sure what you are saying. This is a necro-thread.

ES said, "As I said... the same thing happened with the F-18... F-14... F-15... F-16... etc. Too big and too expensive". He didn't say anything about performance. Nice try at a red herring, though.

Did you follow the whole conversation? As I was saying (back in February) that all those jets when they came out were deemed too expensive and inferior to the Soviets by people/pols who simply did not want them. They were proven wrong. US made aircraft have been splashing MIGs all over.

NestlingEaglet, the F35 JSFjet has yet to enter service, much less splash anything. It HAS bent your Allies over and rammed 'er home..

You really should take the time to READ the Austrialian site reports. The Aussies link is in the discussion above....

Ohhh, Dodo-thud!. Thou art grounded & doomed for extinction, I fear. The polymer matrix deforms and degrades under thermal loads, as the colling system overloads.

Read The attack plan is a simple overwhelming swarm: Offensive Counter Air (OCA) Flankers engage the Combat Air Patrols (CAPs) protecting the AAR tankers and AWACS, while other sections of Flankers simultaneously kill the AAR tankers and AWACS. The fuel and missile payload advantage of the Flanker over the F-35 makes this easy to do.

A probable scenario over vast areas of the Pacific Ocean where such air battles might rage, is that after the tankers are dropped, the F-35s exhaust their fuel and fall into the drink.

And the M-1 Abrams would never survive in the desert they said before the M-1s obliterated every Soviet tank in front of them.

Sigh... you'll never learn.

US stealth F-35 jet is grounded
China National News Saturday 23rd February, 2013

• Famous US stealth jet grounded
• Pilots told to stay out after wing crack revealed
• Officials concerned fault may deter jet buyers
The US Defense Department has decided to ground all its F-35 stealth jets.
Fighter pilots have been told to stay out of F35 cockpits as a precautionary measure following the finding of a mechanical fault, namely a crack in an F-35 engine.
Officials from the F-35 Joint Program Office are working with Lockheed Martin and Pratt Whitney, the joint makers of the plane, to determine any problems.
Wanting to return the aircraft safely to flight as soon as possible, officials are concerned other countries might cut their orders for the jets.
The Navy, Air Force and Marines have their own versions of the F-35.
The Marine version was recently grounded for a month because of unrelated problems.
F-35 planes had a history of delays and cost overruns during their development.

Is that what Canada wanted to purchase from the US ?

Unfortunately, the bull on the program has been slung for over a decade.

In a stand up fight between China and the US in the western Pacific the Chinese will fly from their own soil. Where will the F-35 fly from?

Kadena AFB? The runways at Kadena will be cratered in the first minutes of any conflict by precision guided munitions.

Where else can the F-35 fly from?

e- smack - the Abrams is a 'battle tank'. Both the USN & the USAF, would be rather surprised to find them intheir inventory....As woudl the US marine Aviators....

Based on your posts, I've realised where you are getting the' E - smack force..'.

Which simply shows you have missed the whole point of what I was saying. I should have known better as you are not that bright and have difficulty when thought is required.

Again...from February when the thread started... please review...

I remember when the F-18 was overpriced...useless... a disaster... too much technology that would never work in combat.

Same with the M-1 tank. Prior to Desert Storm they said it would never work in the desert and would not match up to the Soviet made tanks.

We all know how that turned out.

People gotta whine about something.

As I said... the same thing happened with the F-18... F-14... F-15... F-16... etc. Too big... too expensive... too many problems... too dangerous... would never stand toe to toe with Soviet equipment.

...sigh...

People just gotta whine.

Was just disagreeing with the comment that all the F's were too big. Didn't notice it was a dusty thread.

No and I'm not surprised. Lack of decent maintenance takes its toll.

Again... you are not capable of following along in a thread. Even though I have explained you still do not have the intelligence to keep up with me and the other forum members.

DodoThump? What are you... 8 years old?

You are typing Guano , Dodo dump. Good enough for you?

Oh Dodo Dump now? Keep going Hunboldt... it is fun watching you make a fool of yourself over and over.

Was just disagreeing with the comment that all the F's were too big. Didn't notice it was a dusty thread.

That was a criticism of the F-14's and F-15's before and after they were entered into service. Critics said the were less maneuverable and too big to handle the Soviet made MIGs.

That was until they started splashing MIGs all over the world.

No and I'm not surprised. Lack of decent maintenance takes its toll.

Just excuses.

It seems to me that the F-35 is going through normal teething problems. My biggest concern is how the cost has grown. My choice would still be the Stealth Eagle. In terms of speed, range, and weapons, the Eagle is still the best all around air superiority fighter.

I agree with you on the Stealth eagle. The reports out of the Australian analysis are really - eye opening. If the polymer matrix is deteriorating in service, then the entire aircraft ahs to be reworked.. That is really serious.

An “augmented reality” flight helmet for Britain’s new F-35 fighter allowing the pilot to see 360 degrees has “significant technical deficiencies” which have forced designers back to the drawing board.

Helmet for Britain's new F-35 fighter has 'significant technical deficiencies' - Telegraph

Britain is buying 135 F-35s - at £71 million each - for the RN (to serve on the giant new carriers) and RAF and received the first one in July last year. The British F-35 will be called the Lightning II. The F-35s aren't entirely built by the US. The tail section of every plane is being built by Britain's BAE Systems. Overall the UK has a 15% share of the work, enough to sustain more than 20,000 jobs.

L-M has been there before, - remember the "Fry Star' that the airlines stopped buying after the rear engines burnt through the passenger bulkheads?
In 2002, in a surprise decision, the then Defence Minister announced that the planned AIR 6000 flyoff to choose Australia's future fighter aircraft was to be effectively stopped, with the developmental Joint Strike Fighter declared to be the preferred aircraft type.

The Joint Strike Fighter is not designed to perform air superiority roles, unlike the larger F-22A, and is not well adapted to performing the penetrating long range strike role filled by the F-111 until 2010.

There has been considerable adverse press associated with JSF cost overruns, project delays, and other difficulties observed in this program.

The JSF Program and resulting aircraft designs have, since the very first days of the program, been burdened by fatal optimism, a total indifference to what is real, placement of form over substance, the acquisition malpractice of concurrency and the fact that the STOVL F-35B is the baseline for all three variants, having dictated and constrained most if not all key aircraft parameters in the definition and resulting design of the other two JSF variants.

The F-35 JSF aircraft designs will not meet specification nor the operational requirements laid down in the JSF JORD (Joint Operational Requirements Document) by significant degrees, noting that these operational requirements and resulting specifications, themselves, were predicated on the capabilities of reference threats from an era past and subsequently subjected to the illogical and deeply flawed process known as CAIV (Cost As and Independent Variable).

The designs of all three JSF variants are presenting with critical single points of failure while even the most basic elements of aircraft design (e.g. weight, volume, aerodynamics, structures, thermal management, electrical power, etc.) will almost certainly end up in what Engineers call "Coffin Corner".

In essence, the unethical Thana Marketing strategy used to sell the JSF, along with the acquisition malpractice of concurrency in not only development, production and testing but the actual designs of the JSF variants, themselves, have resulted in the JSF marketeers writing cheques that the aircraft designs and JSF Program cannot honour.

A more detailed summary of these points is available in Hansard, Parliamentary Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade, 07/02/2012, Inquiry into the Department of Defence annual report 2010-11 and associated Submissions by Air Power Australia. Further technical discussion can be found in the OSD DOT&E FY2012 Annual Report.

This website indexes a selection of relevant articles, submissions and papers.

Whereas in 2003:

Burbage: There’s a lot of magic, but let’s start with the

infrastructure. The multi-role combat air forces (U.S. Air

Force, Navy and Marine Corps, and the joint Harrier force

of the U.K.) operate airplanes that basically have the same

mission, if you exclude how they are based; i.e., long

runways, and aircraft carriers. What’s unique about them

is how they sleep; but when they’re awake they all do the

same thing.

The design challenge of JSF is to find a way to develop a

family of airplanes and attain economies of commonality

and scale that drive down the costs of each airplane. The

objective is to make the airplanes for about half of what

today’s airplanes cost.

There's the thing... At this point I don't know what Canada is buying, but why not buy something of proven performance? The biggest problem will be extricating ourselves from the F-35. Harper is going to let this thing go and we'll just be dragged along
into buying the F-35, whatever it turns out to be. The F-35 is not a particularly fast aircraft, and it is not what we need to patrol our borders. The Super Hornet or the Stealth Eagle obviously fit our needs better than whatever the F-35 turns out to be.
