So I just want to make sure I got this whole thing right.
The Republicans are against universal healthcare for everyone and in an attempt to stop it from going forward and enhance their chances of taking control of the govt in the next election decided to shut down the govt putting 800,000 people out of work, making 2.9 million work without being paid, stop all veterans benefits including rehab centers and disability checks, stop all federal services except for mail, air-traffic control and of course the war machine. They don't seen inclined to stop there either as on Oct 17th they will also end social security payments, payments to active military not on deployment and every other federal govt payout like transfers to states for welfare and food stamps. Apparently the only thing that won't stop getting paid is the congressmen & senators themselves.

Well... food stamp corruption is out of control. They are usually turned in for cash on the black market. But if they have a freebee with birth control then they won't want to start paying.
You might consider that the Republicans in the House take the view that Obama is the one that is taking that risk.
Well that is the media's take on it. And we don't have Universal Health Care... Obamacare is not Universal. Believe me... when work starts back up, the government workers will recoup their losses. And all those benefits will keep coming.
But if that was a big concern... why didn't the Senate pass the House bill?

Correct me if I'm wrong here but didn't Obama get elected in a landslide on a platform of universal healthcare? I haven't seen any study or poll that shows the majority of the citizens are against getting it. Maybe you mis-spoke and meant the majority of employers are against it because it cuts into their profits.
It would have been a landslide no matter the platform. Just like the next election will be a landslide going the other way.
I personally don't care which side is doing what. They are all culpable and if the American people had any smarts there would be millions of them marching to Washington right now well armed to take their country back from the corporate puppets and end all this bullsh*t forever.

When it comes right down to it principle is all one really has. And certainly ones principles should determine exactly how one should act.
