ROME (Reuters) - Italy's economy minister has sparked uproar by offering "big babies" a tax break if they let go of their mother's apron strings and left home.

So how come it's only men that are afflicted with the high rent problem:?

"More than a third of Italian men over the age of 30 live at home with their parents, a phenomenon blamed on sky-high apartment rents and bleak job prospects as much as a liking for mamma's cooking."

Could this be Calgary's future ... all the men living at home with mom, and the women somehow figuring out how to manage the skyrocketing rents?

I don't understand what this tax break is supposed to accomplish. Is there a surplus of rental accomodation? If there is a surplus the rent should go down. Sounds a bit fishy to me.

I think the idea is to encourage grown men to stop being big babies; to get out into the world and develop an independent life. In exchange for cutting the apron strings, they will be rewarded with a little pocket money to help out with the rent.

I would think most young men living at home would be paying rent of some kind. So now the young guy can move out and live somewhere else. Meanwhile, Mom and Dad can find another young fellow to rent the room Junior was using, and that young fellow can make use of the tax break to pay Mom and Dad the rent Junior used to pay. I'm being silly of course. It would help if we knew how much money Junior made and how much he would expect to pay for rent.

Sounds like a good idea ... a couple of Italian moms can trade sons every 6 months ... make a bundle in gov't rent subsidies.

I think the Italian president is an idiot. There is nothing wrong with living with your parents. That way you can be closer to them. If my parents didn't live on the opposite side of the country I'd live with them. This to me this seems like too much state interference.

And of course ... if you plan to be a dependent single for the rest of your life, living with your parents after you turn 30 is a great idea.

If the majority of men are like this ... bit of a concern for the national birth rate, if you ask me.

Maybe the state is concerned that too many +30 men are perhaps not inclined towards women or wives (that should also know how to cook)?

Whatever. Since when did people wait until they moved out before they started relationships.

Whatever ... if one third of Italian men over the age of 30 live at home with their parents, then it seems like they've had lots of time to start a relationship. I think it's an odd statistic ...

How regressive. I have actually begun to advocate living collectives, I believe there are many movements afoot in this regard as well. It is a simple way to promote economic feasibility within a group of close-knit people who generally must sell their labor for a living.

I don't blame young people for living at home. In Rome a one bedroom apartment goes for around 800 Euros/month. That is nearly what a lot of lower income people make, store clerks, etc. There is a lot of apartment sharing and that is not something a lot of people would jump right into with a stranger.
