OTTAWA - Another United Nations envoy is headed for Canada to check up on us, and this time it will focus on the country's the treatment of Aboriginal Peoples.

Last year it was the UN's special envoy on food security, and Olivier De Schutter -- the UN special rapporteur on the right to food -- wasn't impressed. He concluded that Canada's "self-righteous" attitude belies a very real issue of food insecurity.

The report was widely dismissed and literally laughed at by Conservative cabinet ministers.

Though the relationship between Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government and the UN has been strained, Canada has granted permission for this latest special envoy, which will make three trips here and produce three reports on what it finds.

They have buckets of taxpayer money to squander and a nice little junket to a safe country like Canada is much more relaxing than any war zone.

Lets do a quick review of the way they have been treated by us for the last 150 years and compare it to today's NSA guidelines and see is anybody is 'questioned' about said activities. You know when Priests invoke the 5th some bad things are going on.

Their case should actually be precedent setting and be held in the Hauge rather than the after-hour bars of Ottawa. As a 'conquered people' they are supposed to be shown the lifestyle that would have been theirs if they had sold their land at fair market value (yeah right). If nothing else it would expose how the 'treaties' are always slanted to favor the 'winner' no matter how unjust the invasion in the first place.

The way to get the 'first nations' to 'join the community' is not to take them in the back and beat them senseless it is to make world travelers out of a few every year and their 'stories' back home educate the one on the Rez what the 'outside world' is like and how do they begin to fit in. (profession)
Or does our ego prevent us from making changes as 'the old ways' were stupid back in the beginning and time hasn't changed that aspect one bit?

Have them do it in the winter and then count the toes and fingers of theirs that frost got over the winter.

Seems to me that last time that the UN came to Canada to stir the pot that Canada began writing smaller and smaller cheques to the UN.

Let 'em come in and play the role of moron - save us a lot more money when the contributions get even smaller

Good point. They could investigate the U.S.'s treatment of aborigines, but

1. Since we pay about 25% of the total budget, you don't wanna piss us off,

2. The rez is really dangerous, and

3. We wouldn't listen anyhow.

Neither does Canada. We have been sited at least three times for our treatment of aboriginals and we have ignored them. We just pump out a bunch of propaganda telling the white folk how well off the indians are and how they are lazy and suck off the hind teat of society. Everybody gets all self righteous and says what a bunch of morons the UN are. Canadians can get as self righteous as any other nation, with enough beer, even more so.

The minute that the UN decides to clean-up their own back yard, is the moment that I will think about taking them seriously.

Agreed. Trying to improve ourselves is a waste of time if we're already not as bad as the others. perfection is never something to strive for. Being just better than the rest should always be the mediocrity we strive for.

I think it's squeaky clean... So, we good now?... You'll bring something tangible to the table or just keep throwing-out a bunch of over generalizations that have zero substance?

Maybe the UN can design a voucher system to tackle this most perplexing problem.... Might even work well with their 'right to food' program

Pfffftttt... Vouchers are the wave of the future my good man.

School yourself on the endless bennies associated with voucher systems and then get back to me, I just don't have the time to go over the basics (that you should already know)

No one else seems to listen or take them seriously - makes me wonder why we in Canada would be any different

Exactly. There is no point in trying to improve ourselves when so many others in the world are crawling in the mud. We might as well let our standards coast a little as long as we can keep just slightly cleaner than the rest. That is the medeocrity we ought to strive for.

Well there is evidence of vouchers having certain benefits in the education system. I just don't see how that applies to other areas though. I think Sweden uses something for the sort for its medical system too. But i don't see how that relates to this in any way?

And if anyone suggests we might do better, let's attack their failure to achieve perfection.

Easier than workin'. Most logical fallacies are.

Who cares about being perfect, as long as the rest are worse than we are, relative perfection is just fine, however mediocre it may be. That's the standard we need to strive for to make ourselves a great country.

but you are correct, we need to show the faults of others as much as we possibly can to avoid actually having to improve, lest they catch up to us.
