I am happy whenever the stock market reaches new highs . Any one who wishes the market to go sour because of who occupies the WhiteHouse is an idiot and probably a loser financially as well .

There is a fair amount of speculation that the economic 'boom' the US is seeing now may be connected to suppliers selling as much as they can ship to China in anticipation of tariffs hitting them.

I understand that US coal is now subject to a 25% tariff in China. You have to wonder if the Chinese ever decide to do the same with crude oil what that effect would be on GDP and the economy

Hurting the US economy will inevitably hurt the Canadian economy too. Just something to think about before we cheer on the economic woes of the US. Sure Trump's aggravating the situation with a trade war, but he's hurting not just the US economy.

Yeah, they’re hurting. Sheesh, we should hurt so much.

Free Trade has failed. Tariffs are a constructructive and positive way to build and maintain national, sovereign, integrated, industrial economies. In fact, its the only way. Of course the Wall Street wimps will fly into a fit and run riot like a bunch of old hens in a panic. But its only that old fox Donald Trump in henhouse. Short term pain for long term gain. Bon appetite, Don.

North Korea is probably the most sovereign country in the world. Sovereignty is something we should use to our advantage, not something we just jealously hold on to and put it to no good use. Economically developed economies have been willing to trade a moderate amount of sovereignty in exchange for economic efficiency. Singapore and many other countries fall in that category. In fact Singapore has a higher per-capita GDP than Canada and so does Hong Kong. They're both among the most free-trading countries in the world.

That 'old fox" is a rabid Dingo who is unhinged and unable to put a plan together.

I saw Goldman Sachs the other day saying that stagflation is the biggest threat in the year to come.

A trade war is guaranteed to cause inflation. Unemployment is less guaranteed but probable. So yes, a trade war raises the prospects of stagflation.

Capitalism means that every 10-14 years there is a depression.

China only buys about 130 billion from the U.S. and the U.S. buys over 500 billion each year from China. This means that China is going to run out of targets long before America does .... China will lose this trade war because of that.

However; China could as a last resort sell its U.S. Treasury notes and force the U.S. to increase interest rates in order to encourage others to purchase them if/when China begins to sell off U.S. investments.

Higher interest rates will push the World (not just North America) economy into a depression.

If Canadians are smart and they don't like what Trump is doing, we should boycott their products!

Sure, but that should be an individual decision. US manufacturers do produce things that can benefit Canada. If Trump wants to hurt the US economy, we can't do much about it but we shouldn't be aggravating the situation for ourselves through retaliatory tariffs. That's like telling the US that if the US shoots itself in the foot, we'll shoot ourselves in the foot too in retaliation.

Socialism means Venezuela.

Capitalism will have regular economic recessions, but if the gubmint interferes the recession will become a depression and last much longer than it would have had the gubmint not tried to “fix” the economy.

No Walnut, they are an example of the hardship sanctions cause when you don't bend over and do things the way the US has been taught. The independence thing way back when was over sending money back to England rather than they objected to collecting money. They would be considered to be land barons today. Company Towns are the version of slavery white people were born into, beating others more in their sight is their illusion that they are free.

Every 7 years since 1913 is a bit more than 'occasionally' or even 'accidentally'. It is the systematic rape and pillage of a nations wealth by a foreign entity at a planned interval.
Lot of good it does having you guarding the hen-house. 'Come on in boys and hurry, they will only be gone 17 minutes this time.'

Look up "Hooverville" an excellent example of a government doing nothing about an economic meltdown. Hell, I'll do it for you.

Only because these countries have managed to place some control s on their socialist overlords. Why is it the only countries that have fences to keep their citizens in are socialist while evil capitalist countries have fences to keep foreigners out?

Socialist overlords? All the governments of those nations are socialist. Even the so-called conservative parties in those nations are moderately left wing. And try to educate yourself. Confusing democratic socialism with authoritarian communism is pure ignorance.
