LAHORE, Pakistan — Authorities in Pakistan on Wednesday arrested and charged a man with cyber terrorism for his alleged role in spreading misinformation that led to widespread rioting in the U.K. earlier this month.

The suspect was identified as freelance web developer Farhan Asif, 32, said Imran Kishwar, deputy inspector general of investigations in Lahore, the capital of eastern Punjab province.

The man is accused of spreading misinformation from YouTube and Facebook about the British teenage suspect in a stabbing attack that killed three girls and injured 10 other people July 29 at a dance class in Northwest England.

The false information claimed that the suspect was a recently arrived asylum-seeker and had a name that suggested he was Muslim.

After the misinformation led to a violent mob attacking a mosque near the site of the stabbing the next day, police took the unusual step of clarifying that the suspect was born in the U.K. It’s been widely reported in British media that his parents are from Rwanda and said to have Christian beliefs.

Channel3 Now, an account on the X social media platform that purports to be a news channel, was one of the first outlets to report the false name, Ali Al-Shakati. A Facebook account for the channel said it is managed by people in Pakistan and the U.S.

The site’s editor-in-chief posted an apology July 31 for “the misleading information published in a recent article on our website, Channel3 NOW. We deeply regret any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused.”

But the false reports were widely disseminated and are blamed for fueling more than a week of rioting that broke out across the United Kingdom and has led to more than 1,000 arrests.

Authorities have blamed far-right agitators for stoking the violent unrest by continuing to spread misinformation and promoting the violent demonstrations online.

At a news conference in the eastern city of Lahore, the police official Kishwar said Asif was arrested at his house in the city for questioning.

He said Asif has claimed that he was not the source of the misinformation but that he reposted it from social media. Kishwar said Asif ran the Channel3 Now account, and alleged that he spread fake news to gain more viewers and income.

“He regretted over reposting fake news,” Kishwar told The Associated Press. “This act on the part of Asif amounts to cyber terrorism for which he has been charged.”

Kishwar added that Asif’s arrest was a message for other YouTubers that they should verify facts before disseminating any information.

Police have handed over the case to the Federal Investigation Agency or FIA, which handles cases relating to the cyber terrorism. FIA said the misinformation shared by Asif “created a sense of fear, insecurity” in England, and added that it also harmed Pakistan’s reputation.

It was unclear if Britain had requested his extradition. There is no extradition treaty between Pakistan and the U.K.

Federal investigators were granted permission by a court Wednesday to further question Asif for a day. Asif is expected to appear before a court again on Thursday when investigators are expected to seek more time to quiz him.

— Melley reported from London.

The Monarchy puts the Labour Government to shame

PA-77193160_0.jpg

The King was given a huge welcome by hundreds of people as he visited Southport this week. He took time to meet and chat with many people, something he loves doing.

Compare that to Labour Prime Minister Keir Stalin, who made a brief visit to the seaside town and was loudly heckled and jeered.

King Charles III and the monarchy seem to be far more popular than Keir Stalin and the Labour Government.

Farhan Asif, second left, a freelance web developer who was arrested and charged with cyber terrorism for his alleged role in spreading misinformation that led to widespread rioting in the U.K. earlier this month, leaves with officials after his court appearance, in Lahore, Pakistan, Monday, Aug. 26, 2024.
LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — A Pakistani judge on Monday acquitted a man who was charged with spreading misinformation that helped spark widespread rioting in the U.K. earlier this month, officials said.

The decision came less than a week after Farhan Asif, a 32-year-old web developer, was arrested in a raid on his home in Lahore, the capital of eastern Punjab province, and charged with cyberterrorism.

After a hearing Monday, the judge ordered the release of Asif, who walked free. He told the judge that he deleted his post on social media only six hours after realizing that it was not correct.

Federal investigators told the judge that they had no evidence to prove that he was guilty of intentionally spreading misinformation, Rana Rizwan, a defense lawyer, told reporters.

The Federal Investigation Agency had accused Asif of spreading misinformation on YouTube and Facebook about the British teenage suspect in a stabbing attack that killed three girls and injured 10 other people on July 29 at a dance class in northwest England.

Southport child killer Axel Rudakubana sentenced to minimum of 52 years

02601440-d802-11ef-9e32-2bf3892fd707.png

Axel Rudakubana, 18, has been handed life sentences with a minimum term of 52 years for the murders of Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven.

He received concurrent life sentences with minimum terms of 18 years for eight counts of attempting to murder children and 16 years for the two adults.

Rudakubana would have been given a whole life tariff were it not for the fact he was under 18 when he committed the murders.

He will not be eligible for parole until 2077.

Rudukabana was kicked out of court twice today as he was sentenced to a minimum of 52 years without the possibility of parole.

He shouted: "I need to be seen by a paramedic. I feel ill".

The judge swiftly removed him for the second time and reminded the court that two paramedics had already seen him and determined he is fit to appear.

His actions didn't stop Liverpool Crown Court from applying the sentence, which means he has to spend everyday probably for the rest of his life trying not to be brutally attacked by fellow inmates who don't look kindly upon child killers.

He felt he was the big hard man stabbing little girls. Let's see how he fares coming up against huge powerful men who want to do him in.

Rudakabana's display of cowardice and selfishness in the dock as he feigned sickness while being sentenced to minimum of 52 years

GB News's Mark White bursts into tears as he reads a victim impact statement from a teacher within the dance class where Axel Rudakubana murdered three young girls in July.

Rudakabana is given several life sentences by the same judge who sentenced baby killing nurse Lucy Letby to a whole life tariff in 2013.

The judge told the court that Rudakabana was himself just nine days too young to be given a whole life tariff - the replacement of the death penalty - when he murdered three young girls at a Taylor Swift themed dance class in July.

As it is, Rudakabana will not be eligible for parole until 2077 at the earliest and will still likely spend the rest of his natural life in prison - especially when fellow lags are going to want to do him in.

The minimum of 52 years handed to Rudakabana is one of the longest prison sentences ever handed to a felon in the UK other than a whole life tariff.

The court drawing is surprisingly accurate! When I first saw it, I giggled a bit, and then I saw his picture. Damn…

Not being exposed to your media over there, I’m assuming his parents posted pictures of him when he was about 11, saying he’s such a nice quiet boy…? As opposed to pictures of him at 18 or whatever he is now?

It's illegal in England and Wales to take photographs in court, so that's why we have drawings. And that drawing flatters him somewhat. The photo of him shows him looking like a right evil psycho cunt, which of course he is. He's a triple child killer. And the minimum of 52 years is, in my opinion, worse than the death penalty. If you're hanged you're put out of your misery. This piece of shit won't be put out of his misery for at least 52 years, but could be sooner if someone manages to kill him in prison. It was only last month that a child killer had his throat slit by a tuna tin lid just days into his sentence. Rudakabana may not last 52 days, let alone 52 years. It's likely that he's going to have to spend the rest of his life trying to stop himself being murdered. We here in Britain have a punishment for child killers that is far worse than death.

Same in Canada.

In Canada, serial killers, and mass murderers, get a bulk discount on their sentencing. Seriously not kidding.

Concurrent as opposed to consecutive sentencing, & max is 25 years. Kill one person and the max is 25 years. Kill two people, and the max is 25 years each served concurrently (at the same time), etc…

An Australian guy I know told me earlier that if this happened in Australia he'd probably be given just 20 years.

Our previous Tory Government tried to bring in a law which states that anyone who murders a child will automatically be given life with no possibility of parole. It never happened. Labour should try to do the same.

In the U.S., 27 states and the Federal government have the death penalty.

They all have life without parole.

Arizona's weird. They offer parole after only 20% of your sentence, but they balance it out by handing out sentences in centuries. No shit. The longest I've heard of personally was 400 years. It's OK, he'll be eligible for parole in just 80.

GB News Presenter's U-Turn: Death penalty should be brought back for anyone who murders a child

GRA_AXEL_RUDAKUBANA_MUGSHOT_TREATED_-_454105_frame_0.jpeg

GB News presenter, who used to be opposed to the death penalty, was close to tears today as she said the death penalty should be brought back for demonic child killers like Rudakabana and Letby

The moment Rudakabana stepped out of a taxi (without paying) and entered the Taylor Swift themed danced class and attacked little girls - killing three and leaving ten with severe injuries - on 29th July in a crime that shocked Britain

Interesting in that GB News video that one guy has the same opinion as me: A minimum of 52 years in prison is a far worse punishment than death. Some countries have euthanasia to put people out of their suffering. The death penalty would be like euthanasia. Rudakabana, meanwhile, is going to suffer until, most likely, he dies in prison, which could be for the next 52 years or more.

Y'know what's even better? Life without parole.

But the death penalty isn't intended to be "better" or "worse" than a long stretch as a guest of the state. Think of it as returning a defective (semi)human to the producer.

The recidivism rate of those who've experienced the death penalty is admirably low.

Rudakabana would have got life without parole - which is the replacement for the death penalty - had he committed the crime just nine days later. You have to be at least 18 to get a whole life tariff at the time you committed the crime and he turned 18 nine days later.

You do go on to make a good point, although Rudakabana will be at least 70 by the time he's up for parole. If he's ever released he'll be an old man when he is and therefore not pose much of a threat.
