TV Musicals, Are They Coming Back?
Back in the early days of television musicals was part of the regular programming grid.
Variety TV shows were watched by families all around the world.
Today it’s a different story you can see musicals on French and ethnic TV channels but for some strange reason the English channels abandoned it in the early 1990s
The TV musicals would have been gone forever if it wasn’t for the television writers strike that went on for a more than six months.
The TV networks had to come up with a new idea before they started to lose advertisers.
The Reality TV shows were born which was more improvisation so a dialog script wasn’t required.
The TV execs brought back the contest concept where a prize was offered to a winner.
The Survival brand kicked it off where a group of people were put on an island and given tasks to do and at the end of the show one person voted off and the show continued weekly until the last person won a prize.
Then all kinds of contests came and went dealing with all kinds experiences.
They even went as far as having a wife swapping reality show.
Then the musicals made it on the reality shows with American Idol that promised the winner a recording contract.
The TV execs took a chance last year and produced a weekly 60-minute musical TV show Glee and got a big hit.
I watched a couple of episodes and there are four to five songs on it with good singing and dancing although the script needs some work on it.
I am sure other networks will follow and produce musicals as well.
Since I am accused of partisan politics I just want to remind everyone that the Conservative government is always cutting funding for this industry because all industry people go to Galas and get drunk.
