Historian Christopher Browning on the Trump regime: We're "close to the point of no return"

Scholar of the Nazi period explains why fake news may be a more powerful authoritarian tool than secret police

History can teach us many lessons about Donald Trump and his rise to power. As shown by his deeds, words and policies, Trump is an authoritarian and a demagogue who has, so far, been restrained by America's weakened democratic institutions and norms. Trump has repeatedly shown contempt for America's cosmopolitan, pluralistic multiracial democracy. He and his supporters would smash that order and a create a new one based upon white racial authoritarianism (as well as naked plutocracy) if, and when, they have the opportunity to do so.
Learning lessons from history about the present requires a keen appreciation of context. The model of authoritarianism that Donald Trump, the Republican Party, their allies and voters represent will fit the cultural and political norms and institutions of the United States. This usurpation of American democracy will be both similar to and different from what took place in other countries and at other times.
In all, history's lessons must be learned carefully, and applied with even more care if we are to make better sense of the present and the rise of Donald Trump in the United States, as well as resurgent reactionary right-wing movements around the world.

There is no doubt about this theory.

Goebbels was a very important nazi leader. Perhaps the second most important - and the first most important was also mainly a propagandist

House passes bill that would revamp North American Free Trade Agreement, setting up big wins for Trump, Democrats

The White House last year reached an agreement with Canada and Mexico to change NAFTA, but House Democrats forced President Trump to make numerous additional revisions in recent weeks. The Senate plans to pass the legislation early next year.

A very valid point......about being close to no return..point. Another four years of trump will see the US and its crazy republicans take the nation into territory that the founding fatness could never have anticipated.

Until Mitch McConnel made his rather shocking statement about joining forces with the white house and not needing to be impartial..........I thought there was some sort of sanity remaining .........but his attitude and current beliefs are not that of a a democracy.......but some bizarre authoritarian regime. Trump and his Mitch style cronies are destroying the very fabric of what the US was founded on........ in their quest for absolute power. They might just get it too.......as they are acting like they are not bound by any rules or laws........while making up their own now........

The population is so busy in fighting due to the binary political system.........that they can't even see what is really happening on the larger picture. and right in front of them.

How the Mitch senate handles this impeachment might be a defining pint. If it all goes as is anticipated now......Trump will declare himself innocent ......gloat......and will just be encouraged to be more outrageous with the support of his enablers.

He would even try and pardon himself........

George Conway and other conservative critics launch PAC to take down Trump
“As Americans, we must stem the damage he and his followers are doing to the rule of law, the Constitution and the American character," the group wrote.
Other principals in the group include Steve Schmidt, a former adviser to John McCain; John Weaver, the chief strategist for John Kasich’s presidential campaign in 2016; and Republican political strategist Rick Wilson.

Ex-officials say they feared Putin influenced Trumps views on Ukraine and 2016

One former senior White House official said President Trump even stated so explicitly at one point, saying he knew Ukraine was the real culprit because Putin told me.

source: WAPO

Quite amazing to see how much INFLUENCE Putin has on Trump......... More than any US intelligence agency.

All roads lead to Putin. that is a form of treason. That Ukraine thing seems to come out of nowhere........... and now we know it was inserted by Putin....and Trump bought into it ......creating misdirection.

Pro-Trump media outlet used AI to create fake people and push conspiracies, Facebook says
Facebook took down more than 600 accounts tied to The Epoch Times, a pro-Trump conspiracy website whose parent company spent $9.5 million on ads to spread content through the now-suspended pages and groups.
