I'm in town which sewer cover is your front door?

Given your knowledge of utilities, would you actually know the difference between manhole cover (or “sewer cover” as you call them...hehehehehe) and a curb stop?

PM me and I’ll tell you what a curb stop is

How can I trust you with no credentials? Which province do you actually live in? Do you still live in "the" Thompson?

Given your obvious lack of knowledge regarding utilities, I'm pretty sure you can trust just about anybody to teach you something. Even Petros.

Bell: Going gaga over Greta

She’s coming! Greta is coming! She’s coming right here to Alberta!
Did you hear? Somebody said she’s already in Calgary! Or on her way! Wow! Does that mean we’ll be on CNN?
Look at me, Mom!
I’m with Greta and she’s famous with millions of followers on Instagram and she’s so cool and the newspapers and TV love her and they hang on her every word as if it’s from her lips to God’s ears.
It’s all about being good to the Earth and how the adults in charge suck and if we don’t have a revolution round about noon tomorrow we’re all going to go the way of the dinosaurs and quick.
Yes, Greta Thunberg’s doomsday crusade has more than a few in this province falling all over themselves.
Now let’s get this straight before we go any further.
Greta, a saintly teenage Joan Of Arc figure to those who believe we are at the beginning of a mass extinction, should be welcomed here as all visitors are welcomed.
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg addresses supporters during the rally for action on climate change on Sept. 27 in Montreal. Minas Panagiotakis/Getty Images
She should be allowed to say her piece without personal attacks and threats.
She should be allowed to say going as far as cutting carbon emissions in half in ten years is still unacceptable and too weak, no matter the level of fantasy in the statement.
She should be allowed to say all of us grown-ups have failed and failed badly and need to change our lives in a big, big way. Air travel. Bad. Gas-powered vehicles. Bad. Eat vegan too.
There goes Alberta beef. A double whammy. Oil and beef. Both bad.
Think I’m going to become a Trappist monk.
What I don’t get is what some folks who should know better think playing along with Greta is going to get them.
You know politicians like the two big city mayors — Calgary’s Nenshi and Edmonton’s Iveson — who want to talk to Greta about climate change and what they’ve done and what they can do.
Or groups like Canada Action or city councillors like Jeff Davison who want to show Greta around, pointing out all the wonderful ways Alberta’s oilpatch is doing a bang-up job on the environment file.
Can hear them already, pathetic as they sound, while they safely tuck away their I Love Oil and Gas T-shirts in the bottom drawer for the time being.
Calgary Flames skate at the Saddledome in Calgary Thursday, January 10, 2019. A new on ice sign has been painted in two of the corners supporting oil and gas. Jim Wells / Postmedia
Greta, Alberta is so much more environmentally friendly than bad actors like Saudi Arabia and we’re not big-time polluters like China and did we mention Russia or Venezuela?
We’re leading the world, Greta. We’re cutting edge.
Have they not googled Greta’s position on such things? No one is doing enough. No one is doing anything near enough.
There have been about 1,500 arrested in the chaos of climate change protests in London.
“If standing up against the climate and ecological breakdown and for humanity is against the rules then the rules must be broken,” says Greta.
Do these talkers think a few crumbs will make a loaf for Greta who wants so much more?
Then again, maybe they’re just playing a role and hanging out with Greta is a photo op to die for. After her UN speech some world leaders wanted selfies.
They can claim to care oh-so-deeply about the environment. For 15 minutes of fame and a selfie with Greta they’d worship Gaia the green goddess if you told them where to put the incense.
Yes, Greta’s trip is magic to them, so much better than a grip-and-grin snapshot where they hand out a cheque to renovate the kitchen in the community rink.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau greets Swedish climate change teen activist Greta Thunberg before a climate strike march in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on Sept. 27, 2019. ANDREJ IVANOV / REUTERS
With Greta they can appear the very image of moral superiority without having to do much but follow along, play their bit part and exhale … ahem .. the appropriate hot air.
Colley-Urquhart, a Calgary councillor, is almost begging Greta to come to Calgary, to the council chambers, to address the politicians, to look over city hall plans, to advise this group who can’t save themselves let alone anybody else.
Another councillor, Druh Farrell, wants to give Greta a white hat.
Rachel Notley, the former NDP premier, says Alberta needs leaders and Premier Kenney is a coward. Notley advises Kenney to meet with Greta.
“I would suggest he takes this issue seriously instead of just yelling at other people who do,” she says.
Kenney has no plans to be lectured.
Back at city hall, Coun. Jeromy Farkas is another person not caught up in all the hype and hyperbole.
“Why are we pandering to people who want to put an end to life as we know it?”

Breaking: Alberta Has Been Secretly Hiding Hordes Of Normal People

In a stunning development for a province that many Canadians had dismissed as being 90% badlands, and 10% poor urban planning, Alberta today pulled an ace out of its yellow vest when it produced a teeming throng of actual normal people to stand with climate activist Greta Thunberg, as she politely submitted her request for a future. “We drove in from Lethbridge to be here today,” shouted a woman over the din of her fellow supporters, all of whom claimed to both love their province AND the planet, something that Alberta’s current premier, Jason Kenney, has repeatedly assured the voters here simply isn’t possible.
“Just because this province is the single largest exporter of assholes in Canada, doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of people living here who care about things like the environment, human rights, social equality, and even grammar,” the mother of two said, as she passed her eyes over the humming horde of happy humanitarians.
While experts have long theorized about the existence of normal people in Canada’s second province once removed from the Pacific Ocean – pointing to such evidence as the election of Rachel Notley, and existence of Jann Arden, Jarome Iginla, and Joni Mitchell – many of these theoretical ‘norms’ have recently moved to LA, or gone to ground, making their detection difficult.
“We picked up a faint distress signal over downtown Calgary earlier this summer,” said Tommy Trudope (no relation) head of the Centre For Not Mining Ourselves Extinct, a non-profit based in Winnipeg. “But by the time we got a team in there to try to make contact the closet-carers were gone, blending back into the surrounding populace like sea birds in an oil slick.”
It was when they heard that Greta Thunberg intended to visit Canada’s largest province (by neediness per capita), that Mr. Trudope knew that this was going to be their chance to capture actual footage of the elusive Non-Aggressive Albertan.
“And just look at it would you?” said Tommy, spreading his arms out over the colourful scene of people waving banners of hope in the mid-autumn light.
“Yes, this province is famous for its petty pricks like Jason Kenney, Ezra Levant, and Ted ****ing Cruz (that’s his actual middle name so please include it in your article), with their tiny, and quite literally non-renewable, ideas.”
“But it’s also home to K.D. Lang. And a lot of people who care about the future of this planet.”

Trumpites have no solutions to anything because they invest so much time and energy in being angry, they have so little for anything else
Solutions to what? The fake climate crisis? Meanwhile you're such a retard all you can do is scream "Trump" and "Trumpites".

There's no climate crisis. It's NOT 4 degrees warmer than "predicted". All the computer models predicting and projecting the climate in the near future are 100% crapola. Humans do NOT generate the bulk of GHGs although we could probably cut down on them, even if it's just for the cleaner air. But there's also a BIG difference between working to clean up one's act and slitting one's own throat. Attempting to power modern economies purely on the vagaries of weather would definitely qualify as slitting one's own throat.

Bell: Greta is gone, it's back to the real world

Doomsday prophecies! End times hysteria! The weeping, the wailing and the gnashing of teeth!
Thousands march on the legislature in Edmonton. Greta Thunberg, the teen environmental extremist, the social media pop star, has arrived.
I’m not up in Edmonton. I watch from afar.
I would have driven up but Greta would have been mad at me, making a pilgrimage in my weapon of mass destruction, a VW Golf with a full tank of gas.
But, like certain self-serving politicians in this province parading their phoney-baloney virtue, maybe I should have begged for a selfie with Greta.
After all, she, like, just wants to not only shut down the oilpatch, she wants to shut down the use of oil and gas altogether and that seems like such a cool idea.
Climate activists hold hands while participating in a climate strike march from Beaver Hills Park to the Alberta Legislature to hear Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg in Edmonton, on Friday, Oct. 18, 2019. Ian Kucerak / Postmedia
Especially since the clock is ticking ever so quickly to the Last Judgment where Mother Earth will send us gas-guzzling unbelievers to the burning fires of hell.
Gag.
Well, the revival meeting proceeded as scheduled at the church of the climate apocalypse.
The useful idiots are star-struck over Greta, awash in all the eco-celebrity and the self-righteous belief they are on the right side of history.
Weren’t the commies also once on the right side of history? I digress.
The breathless press is out in force, many no doubt also baptized in the faith.
NDP Leader Rachel Notley wrote Greta a letter. Now, no longer burdened with being premier, Real Rachel returns.
She commended Greta for her “advocacy” and congratulated the 16-year-old on her “success.”
She wanted to speak with Greta in person. Wouldn’t that look good on Twitter.
Notley said there are issues where she disagrees with Greta. But they are sisters in the struggle. They “share a commitment” to act on climate change.
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg had a police escort to her car after she joined thousands of Edmonton youth, climate activists, and community members outside the Alberta Legislature on Friday. Shaughn Butts / Postmedia
Sarah Hoffman, the leader … er … not-yet leader of the Alberta NDP, wanted Premier Kenney to join Greta at the march.
Now that I would pay to see. Kenney waving a Make Earth Cool Again sign.
It wasn’t happening. The premier wasn’t going to schmooze with the prophet of the environmental Armageddon.
“Why won’t he do it?” cried Hoffman.
Meanwhile, Marie Renaud, another NDP member of the legislature, took the delirium up a notch and spoke of “the beginning of a climate change apartheid.”
Does that make Greta the new Nelson Mandela?
The premier was busy at the opening of a natural gas pipeline, what he calls “a real-world solution” to lowering emissions.
But Kenney committed the unforgivable sin in the world of the zealots. He talked about something called “the real world.”
He even defined it.
“The real world most people inhabit where we understand the world is dependent on energy and the question is how to produce that energy in a more responsible environmental fashion.”
Premier Jason Kenney speaks on Friday at the celebration of a new 130 kilometre long natural gas pipeline delivering gas to two of the province’s largest power plants, at the TranAlta Keephills Generating facility 75 km west of Edmonton. Ed Kaiser / Postmedia
And, he added, the real-world consequences if Greta’s dream came true would be mass unemployment, a huge increase in poverty and a radical reduction in the standard of living.
“We do not live in some kind of dream world. We live in the real world.”
The day before, in the real world, the premier wondered why the Notley NDP didn’t have the courage to stand up and denounce the federal NDP and Justin Trudeau for their attacks on Alberta.
Easy answer. Why fight for the province when you can dwell in a child’s fantasyland and play-act how you’re saving the world?
Besides, Notley voted for Jagmeet Singh’s NDP.
In the end, after days of hype, we get Greta.
They chanted her name. They chanted their demands.
Get up! Get down! Keep the fossil fuels in the ground! Repeat after me — many times over.
The warm-up speakers went on and on. We even got a lecture on colonialism.
Then there was Greta.
The Greta of leaving fossil fuels in the ground.
The Greta of a world with no meat and no dairy.
The Greta where lowering greenhouse gas emissions is “far from enough” and “our emissions have to stop.”
Stop in six to 12 years or enormous suffering.
Actually, in Edmonton, Greta mentions less than eight-and-a-half years but countries like Canada have to get to zero carbon emissions much faster.
A counter-protester is seen during a climate strike march from Beaver Hills Park to the Alberta Legislature on Friday. Ian Kucerak / Postmedia
“Amen!” shouts someone in the crowd.
Cheers from the many.
“You can’t solve an emergency without treating it as one,” she says.
More cheers.
Greta is finished, speaking just a little more than 10 minutes.
Louder applause than you’d hear at many rock concerts.
Greta! Greta! Greta!
The assembled begin to break up, many no doubt having no intention of practising what they just heard preached.

One can support the economy by striving towards a green energy sector and divesting from a sunset industry. One can support our oil and gas workers as we begin to transition into greener technologies and industries.

I agree with yah Cliffy, do we have anything viable to transition into yet?

Edmonton mural of young Swedish climate activist Thunberg defaced
Canadian Press

EDMONTON — An Edmonton man says he defaced a mural of teenage Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg because he wanted to take a stand peacefully.
James Bagnall says he wrote “stop the lies” and “this is oil country” on the portrait of the 16-year-old girl against a bright-blue background.
He says he wasn’t taking shots at Thunberg as a person, but he’s tired of people bashing Albertans’ way of life.
The mural was painted on what is known as a free wall not far from a light-rail transit station near Commonwealth Stadium.
Artist AJA Louden told CBC News in an email that one of his favourite things about the wall is that anyone is allowed to express themselves, so he’s not upset.
Before it was defaced, the mural read “Thank you, Greta” and “Thank you, Beaver Hills Warriors” — a reference to the grassroots environmental group that helped lead a large climate change rally with Thunberg in Edmonton on Friday.
The eyes on the portrait were blacked out, and a slur and a message telling Thunberg to leave Canada were written over top in French. Bagnall said he was not responsible for the French messages.
Thunberg was among thousands who walked through the city’s downtown to rally at the legislature, vastly outnumbering a group of oil-and-gas industry supporters at a counter-rally.
In a speech at the event, she repeated her message that the future of the planet is at stake and action must be taken to fight climate change, but she refrained from any direct criticism of the Alberta oilsands.
Thunberg spent part of the weekend near Fort McMurray doing interviews, which a local First Nation said will be part of an upcoming BBC documentary.
The Mikisew Cree First Nation said Thunberg’s interviews focused on environmental concerns over oilsands development and climate change.
She was presented with a blanket and the First Nation said in a statement that it was honoured to “join forces” with Thunberg as she leads the way in “protecting our planet from the climate crisis.”
Thunberg arrived in Fort McMurray on Friday night and met with Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Chief Allan Adam, who said he told her to get Europeans to lobby oilsands investors for greener technology to extract Alberta energy.

AGAR: Who is funding Greta Thunberg's world eco-adventure?
Jerry Agar

October 21, 2019 5:53 PM EDT

Is it cold and cynical to ask who is funding Greta Thunberg’s world eco-adventure?
Of course it isn’t. If someone was out filling meeting rooms and public parks with thousands of people while extolling the virtues of fossil fuel that question would be asked immediately, and for good reason.
As they say, follow the money.
She is a 16-year-old girl. I am a grown man with a job and I can’t afford to pull up stakes and go traipsing around North America on a speaking tour unless someone foots the bill.
Ms. Thunberg has appeared at the UN in New York, in Montreal, just recently in Alberta, and has plans to appear in Chile, all in support of her particularly apocalyptic message of global doom.

She has won several honours and scholarships, but it seems that when there was a cash award she donated it to charity. For example she received the German Goldene Kamera Special Climate Protection award and Thunberg said she would donate the 25,000 euro prize money to organizations she feels are doing good work in the area of climate change.
On Facebook, Thunberg addressed the rumours she knows abound about her.
“Many people love to spread rumors saying that I have people ‘behind me’ or that I’m being ‘paid’ or ‘used’ to do what I’m doing. But there is no one ‘behind’ me except for myself. My parents were as far from climate activists as possible before I made them aware of the situation.”
Are her parents funding the effort? She claims that at first they were against her activism but, “my parents pay for tickets and accommodations.”
She and her family have a book on the market but she claims all profits from that effort also go to charity. She is quite a fundraiser, it seems, but yet takes no money herself while travelling the world.
GOLDSTEIN: UN's fat-cat hypocrites praise Greta Thunberg
GOLDSTEIN: Greta Thunberg is not the problem — politicians are
GUNTER: Teen eco-warrior plays into progressives' fanciful beliefs
She claims independence.
“I am not part of any organization. I sometimes support and cooperate with several NGOs that work with the climate and environment. But I am absolutely independent and I only represent myself. And I do what I do completely for free, I have not received any money or any promise of future payments in any form at all. And nor has anyone linked to me or my family done so.”
Indeed here have been false stories about her and her financial situation. A hoax magazine cover claimed she was the “highest paid activist.” A number of sources have discredited a false image of Thunberg with the American financier George Soros. (That was a particularly clever hoax as he would be a likely suspect.)
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau greets Swedish climate change teen activist Greta Thunberg before a climate strike march in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on Friday, Sept. 27, 2019. (Reuters/Andrej Ivanov)
Some people feel she is being used as a puppet for shadowy adults. I don’t know. She may be the Doogie Howser of the global crisis set, wise and independent beyond her years. She seems quite intelligent.
Or maybe she is actually the Mother Teresa of the movement, doing the right thing, always and with no compromise, and asking no reward.
But no one gets from New York to Montreal to Edmonton and on to Chile for free. Is it just her parents?
Anyone speaking against any aspect of climate change gets accused of being in the pocket of Big Oil, so if she gets to scold the planet, she needs to be more transparent than a mere Facebook posting.
