'Tortured' potatoes more nutritious say scientists | News.com.au

POTATOES should be given electric shock treatment to make them healthier, scientists claim.

Researchers at Obihiro University in Japan found that zapping spuds with electric shocks forces them to produce more antioxidants, which protect the human body from cell damage.

The process involved immersing whole potatoes in salty water and zapping them for up to half an hour.

Scientists then tested the spuds and found antioxidant levels rose by up to 50 percent. Other tests using ultrasound on the potatoes proved to be similarly beneficial.

Dr Kazunori Hironaka, who headed the research, suggested that the inexpensive electric shock process could be used at an industrial level to make potatoes a so-called superfood.

"Antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables are considered to be of nutritional importance in the prevention of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, various cancers, diabetes and neurological diseases," Dr Hironaka said.

“We found that there hasn't been any research on the healthful effects of using mechanical processes to stress vegetables, so we decided in this study to evaluate effect of ultrasound and electric treatments on polyphenols and other antioxidants in potatoes."

The findings were presented at the 240th national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston.

So..... they suggest "Torturing" potatoes to make them tastier?

We all know where this will eventually lead to.

They'll torture and beat potatoes for a few years and confirm this process does make them tastier, so they'll eventually expand this practice to other fruits and vegetables..... and then guess what?

Eventually one of these forms of plant life are going to have enough, stand up and start fighting back.

It has already been foretold 32 years ago what will happen, yet nobody took the warnings seriously:

This is why I continually promote the eating of meat and animals.... we already know how they'll react and/or fight back..... but when it comes to something that bottles up all their emotions and refuses to communicate with anyone?

Nobody knows what will happen when they finally explode and fight back.

Maybe Ketchup..... maybe Mashed Potatoes...... all I do know is that if the warnings 32 years ago are true, there will be loss of life on both sides.

I just seriously don't think we should be pulling the first punch with torturing these lifeforms. We're pushing our limit with them enough as it is.

I like to make the adult potatos be tied up to a chair and watch as their little potato children are peeled and then sliced into numerous pieces and then placed into a fryer and turned into french fries!!

and then I take the adult potatos and do the same to them, but slowly and amateurishly!

hahahaha

Well if there's a seriousness to this topic, it's that this study also shows another example of how plant life does react to the environment it is subjected to through various levels of stimuli.

Using the term "Torture" could be a quip to interest passing readers and in relation to the old ways of shock treatment, then again, it could also be a nod towards people beginning to accept that it's not just humans and other animals that react to things we regard as "Pain."

As I was picking up my dinner from the stove yesterday I noticed the potatoes looked steamed. All that torture I guess. The clams didn't look too happy either.
