OSHAWA — Hours after meeting Toronto Mayor Rob Ford at a police station in Scarborough Tuesday to discuss how to tackle gun crimes — in the wake of a deadly multiple shooting last week at an east Toronto barbecue that killed two people and injured 24 — Stephen Harper said the men agreed on the need for tough sentences for those caught with illegal firearms.
“I think these events in Toronto underscore why these penalties are essential,” the prime minister said at a GM Canada announcement.
“This is not a theoretical problem.”
