outcome was better today, but it was touch and go with the offense, then a timely homerun

by martin, with a full count, that hit made the difference, sanchez got hit early, but

was much better from then on, didn't give them much of anything, grilli was outstanding, as

he has been right from the start then osuna, gave up a long hit with 2 out, right to the wall,

then a pop up to end the game.

jays 4 Astros 2

I so enjoy watching Jason Grilli come off the mound after his innings. He's really taken over that 8th inning spot - good on Jason. Good game today. Russell sure had himself a day.

yes, he is exactly what that bull pen needed, so experienced, so strong, very focused, and he can be
quite an inspiration to the other pitchers in that pen. what a valuable find he was.

watched part of the jays game today, picked up what I missed on replays after game.

good hitting today, and stroman pitched very well, and they shut down altuve at bat,

which is hard to do, best batter in the majors.

martin got another home run

encarnation also

tulo got one, and lots of hits by others, even upton got 2 hits, wow, thought he was
never going to start, but he hit well before coming to the jays, so its just a matter
of time, just like tulo when he came, didn't hit well at all, then it started and hasn't
stopped.

they play the Yankees tomorrow, dickie pitching

jays 9 Astros 2

The play which defined the game for me was Martin catching a foul out over the railing of the Astros dugout. Seemed to change the tempo of the inning and kill the building Houston rally.

A rain delay and change of pitcher plus an excellent at bat by the Bringer of Rain and the Jays were away to the races. They broke the game wide open in the 7th scoring, I think it was 8 runs and lead the Yanks 12 - 6 in the top of the 9th.

Another fantastic comeback by the Jays. Jays sit atop the ALE all alone and a game ahead of both the Orioles and the Red Sox. Go Jays! Final 12 - 6

When the rain came, the Yanks were leading 5 - 0 and Marco was struggling on the mound.

what a difference some rain makes, either that, or gibbins rung all of their necks while they were
waiting.

like two different games, lots of fun running around the bases.

Face-off between Donaldson, Gibbons broken up by teammates
By Ken Fidlin, Toronto Sun
First posted: Wednesday, August 17, 2016 05:43 PM EDT | Updated: Wednesday, August 17, 2016 07:39 PM EDT
NEW YORK – By the end of the game, the Blue Jays were able to joke about it, but there didn't seem to be a lot of laughter in their dugout after Josh Donaldson struck out for the second time in the third inning Wednesday.
Donaldson came back to the dugout and smashed his bat dangerously close to some of his teammates. Manager John Gibbons confronted him, words were exchanged, and then the two were separated by Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Thole.
Here's manager John Gibbons' version of the confrontation:
“I told him after that first at-bat to get a new bat. 'That one ain't working,' I said. He took the same one up there a second time and that didn't work. He chose to break it. So I went down and told him 'You should have listened to me.'
“That was basically it.”
Donaldson had another, far more creative version.
“I was coming back to the dugout and hit my bat against the (railing) and Gibby asked me what kind of cologne I was wearing.
“I said 'It's this new cologne called Tom Ford. I just got it.'
He said, 'Really?'
“And then he got kind of close to me and got a good whiff of it and I said 'Hey, man, back up. I'll give you some after the game.' So that's when we separated.”
A reporter asked Donaldson if that was when Tulowitzki jumped in to get a smell as well.
Donaldson said:
“Yeah, I think he liked it too.”
Somebody then asked “If any of us want to get a sniff, we're in trouble?”
“Just don't get too close,” said Donaldson. “You're in a good space right now.”
The upshot of all the story-telling is that tempers flared briefly, as they often do in major league baseball dugouts. Whatever was said was clearly resolved long before the doors to the clubhouse were opened.

Cabbies seeking surge pricing 'unacceptable'
By Daniel McKenzie, Toronto Sun
First posted: Wednesday, August 17, 2016 10:32 PM EDT | Updated: Wednesday, August 17, 2016 10:40 PM EDT
TORONTO - A family visiting from P.E.I. just wanted a ride after the baseball game Sunday afternoon.
They weren’t expecting to encounter angry taxi drivers demanding double the normal rate.
“I couldn’t believe it. This is your business and you’re yelling at people,” Michelle Anthony said.
Anthony, her fiance and her two sons had left the Rogers Centre on a high after watching the Blue Jays win.
Their excitement ended abruptly once they tried to grab a cab on Bremner Ave. to take them back to her brother’s apartment near Bay and Gerrard Sts.
“We went up to the first cab … and he’s like, very rudely, ‘Thirty dollars!’” she said. “I said, ‘Thirty dollars? ... it’s never cost me $30 before.’” Anthony, originally from Toronto, had already travelled the same distance to visit Ripley’s Aquarium for around $11 or $12.
The driver insisted on the price. She refused and approached another taxi where Anthony says a woman was already telling the driver, “I’m not paying $35!” That driver made the same demand from her too. Then a third piped in and told her to pay up or get lost, she said.
“The first one was an all-white cab, the next one was a Beck and the other was a Co-op cab,” she said. “I said, ‘You can’t charge that,’ and he said, ‘I can too, it’s busy. Walk over to Simcoe St. and get your own cab over there.’” Anthony said they eventually took the subway.
“I was just shocked,” she said.
Co-op Cabs CEO Abdul Mohamoud called the behaviour “unacceptable.”
“First of all, besides being against our procedure, it’s also illegal. The drivers cannot refuse any passenger, let alone ask a flat rate,” he said. “If you look at the tariff card inside the vehicle, the passenger bill of rights, it reads that if the meter is not on the ride is free. They’re not allowed to do surge pricing.”
Mohamoud said Co-op would suspend drivers who break these laws and encouraged customers to get cab numbers and report the drivers to the company and the city.
Beck taxi did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Tracey Cook, Municipal Licensing and Standards executive director, said a driver can only refuse a fare if they feel their safety is at risk. She said the city issues tickets to drivers who break the bylaw.
Cook says has heard complaints about taxis refusing fares.
“It’s crazy. Then the industry is looking at the city … (for) fixing their industry issues. Industry, heal thyself, man,” she said. “It’s too bad because there’s a lot of taxicab drivers that are great, that you have a wonderful experience with, but then you’ve got people who do this kind of stuff.”

Looks like a fair number of Jay fans have turned up for the game, talloola.

well, they were happy for quite a while, but that change up martin called on osuna didn't work,
oops, over the fence, that's all she wrote, at that point I was jumping from the game to the Olympics, so I wouldn't miss the men's 4x100, it didn't disappoint, bolt did it., and Canadians do get a bronze
medal because of u.s. mistake, they did the exchange of baton way too late, past the line, so
bye bye Charlie, Canada is in.

Aaron Sanchez didn't have a great day on the mound yesterday but the bullpen came through for the team and the homer by Edwin gave the Jays a 1 run win over the Indians. Roberto Osuna faced with the same line-up that foiled his save yesterday redeemed himself when he got Rameriz to fly out to left field, struck out Chisenhall then faced Naquin who had the walk-off homer for the Indians yesterday. After getting behind in the count 2 - 0, Roberto evened the count then got Naquin to ground out to 3rd on a fastball.

Marcus Stroman will be on the mound for the Jays today.

a big part of sanchez not having a good day was that very costly error by travis, would have been
3 out double play, but all those runs came in after the error, those runners shouldn't have been there
it was a routine simple double play throw to second, that he threw wide, he has done that on second
a few times.
goins also made one fielding error on s.s.

sanchez should still have the win, as game was tied when he went out, and Edwin hit a homer for the
go ahead run, which was the winning run, before next pitcher came in.

There is a MLB scoring rule that says a starting pitcher, to qualify for a W, must pitch 5 innings. If he doesn't, the scorer will give it to the most deserving reliever (in his/her opinion). Otherwise, he would have got the W because he was the pitcher of record when the go-ahead run was scored.

Another day the offense has taken a vacation and another stellar Brett Cecil pitching outing.

ok, I see, then no win for sanchez

yes, cecil is a surprise each time, but can be very good, not today.

Indians are a tough team, good pitching, good batting, its a battle, he who blinks, loses.

Jays definitely had something in their eyes this weekend. Lots of blinking.

This also means if Jays wind up with same record as Cleveland, Cleveland has home field advantage having won 4/7 games against the Jays. Jays also will lose tiebreaker with Texas.

The Aaron Sanchez saga continues ... he has been optioned to Dunedin. Loup has been recalled from AAA. They will skip his next start in order to 'give him some rest'. They will recall him on 08/31. I think the 7 day rest thing is not working out too well either.

according to the interviews with him and others, this was all planned ahead, helikes it better than
going to the bull pen. he will work out while there, and he also takes a pay cut, and he wouldn't
have had to do it if he didn't want to, but he seems fine with it, so whatever, the only thing I
don't like is loup coming up.
the time off will do him good, a bit of rest doesn't hurt, it helps.

does anyone know why sanchez is being handled with kid gloves, but stroman just pitches away and
no one really cares how many games he plays or how many innings he pitches. is it the different
styles, the way sanchez uses his arm, how big he is, cause they aren't that far apart in age, but
stroman does have a much more compact style of pitching, maybe he isn't working that elbow the same way.
or maybe its becaue stroman didn't play all last season, which makes more sense to me, but they didn't
overpitch sanchez last season, monitored his innings.

What I understand is that the issue is that he is making a huge jump over his previous high and certainly last year. Stroman is and probably has pitched this many innings in past years. I don't know why Sanchez hasn't. But this goes back to how they pitched on the way up in the minors too.

This inning thing is also a relatively new concept in pitching philosophy. The first time it really came to light was with Harvey in New York (Mets) last year. 10 years ago, your Smotzes and whatever burned up innings like there was no tomorrow.

I just saw the ticker on the news so I am glad Sanchez is ok with it. I think it will be better than waiting 7 days to pitch as well. Loup is a left hander. And maybe this time he can be reliable. They really need a reliable left hander out of the pen.

Jays mum on STD allegations against Encarnacion
By Brad Hunter, 24 Hours
First posted: Monday, August 22, 2016 08:46 PM EDT | Updated: Monday, August 22, 2016 08:56 PM EDT
Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion is reportedly being sued for $11.5 million by a woman who claims the star gave her multiple sexually transmitted diseases during a February tryst in the Dominican Republic.
The shocking report from TMZ couldn’t have come at a worse time for the American League RBI leader as the Jays are mired in a hitting slump and in a tight pennant race.
The charges have stunned Jays’ fans.
According to the gossip site, the 33-year-old Encarnacion’s accuser is a 24-year-old family friend who first met the designated hitter in 2013.
She added in the lawsuit that she also hooked up with another unnamed member of the Blue Jays in 2015 and was later tested at a planned parenthood clinic and given a clean bill of health.
As for Encarnacion, she said the twosome had a weekend getaway to Punta Cana and had unprotected sex on at least two occasions.
In the days following, she began experiencing severe pain and feared she had been stricken by the Zika virus. TMZ said a doctor confirmed she was suffering from two STDs.
When she contacted the heavy hitter, he insisted that he was clean.
Encarnacion suggested: “She may have picked up (the STDs) when they went four-wheeling and she swam in the river.”
Eventually, she claims, Encarnacion stopped contacting her.
Now, she believes he knew he had an STD and didn’t tell her.
She’s suing him for battery and misrepresentation of facts.
Encarnacion’s agent told TMZ he had “no comment” on the matter.
He and his longtime girlfriend, Jennifer Pena, have one son, Edwin Jr.
“The Blue Jays and Edwin Encarnacion will continue to keep our focus on the game of baseball and will not be commenting on this matter,” said an e-mailed statement from Jay Stenhouse, the Blue Jays vice president of communications.
