What scares me is this is the generation that will be changing my diapers in an "Old Folks home", I know they are going to beat me, I just know it.
LOL.no doubt, it will be payback time.Hopefully they will be so out of shape the paddling will be a welcome break from drooling on the windowsill.

As if todays kids aren't fat enough, lets ban further physical exercise at the schools. Heaven forbid some one might get a scrape, or even worse might be "IT"! What a sack of wussies...

ATTLEBORO, Massachusetts (AP) -- Tag, you're out!Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban. While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous. (Watch how second-grader Kelsey interpreted the rule -- 1:30)Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Spokane, Washington, also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, South Carolina, school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports."I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.Copyright 2006 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

(This new forum is a bit dubious; I just lost an hour of typing)

I have a friend that was brought up one town away from here (I'd let her type but I'm afraid we would both be banned), she tells me that it is most likely that this Principal is not from this area. The kids in this area in all likelihood do go hunting or fishing on the weekends with Dad. Mom and Dad were brought up on the farm and ended up growing away from the farm into a middleclass job. Attleboro and the surrounding areas used to be dairy farms, pig farms, chicken farms ect., now, its mostly high dollar single family dwellings. Most of these people raise their children with farm values.

As for the younger generation being wimpy, in my opinion, I agree and disagree. It depends on the area and the parents values. My personal observation is that teens are arrogant and self-centered, as it should be, it's normal. In my area the young people 25-35, I find to be intelligent, ambitious and endearing. But I live in a college town so I believe this makes a huge difference.

You thought so too?

I was looking at some stuff the other day, that sounded a lot like him, but I didn't want to make a claim until I could prove it. I mentioned it to a friend of mine, that runs another forum, she said she might drop by and take a look. She has ways of ferreting such things out.

I must ask her how it's done. I usually let by gones be by gones, and apologise if I need, but with mickey, I think it would be quite funny to out him, as it were.

I called him on this issue in another post, he responded with his usual, insults and obfuscation, and got all butthurt about being challenged on his supposed plaigiarism....he didnt outright deny it, but rather pulled the "you're just a cro magnon conservative and have no brain ifyoudontbelieve9/11consipiracytheories" card...so whatever

I would let sleeping dogs lie, but he just keeps rubbing me the wrong way. I'm a big enough man to apologise if caught "Fred Flintstoning" off at the mouth, and have done so many times here. But this twirp has taken cheap shot after cheap shot, implying my intellect is some what lower then his. Implying that anyone that has a military or "Gung Ho" attitude is some sort of a bafoon. Then runs around, sucking up to everyone he can to feel safe, or trying to court folks to his side, like some cowardly child.

My guess is, I could likely out survive, out wit, out hunt, out fish, out shoot(Like I don't know what IPSC is, my guess he couldn't shoot his way out of a wet paper bag. Colpy, if you read this, he's fulla shyte! He would no more know how to use a weapon then I would know how to bake a quiche.)out live life in general. This lil pip sqeak, is goning to get served. We're lookin' now, lol.

I have to eat my words.....

This is an impossibility on an open forum - what you see is what you are gonna have to own.... but I made a mistake earlier with my comment about kids' sports activities - not regulation supervised sports but just playground stuff called "recreation".... what I said still holds true for me but there is a group of kids missing which I was reminded of yesterday....

If you have ever visited a Cancer Clinic for Children.... there are no wimps in sight....'nuff said.

So I have to amend my earlier words: we still make em strong in the face of adversity....perhaps that is why we view regular kids as wimpy... we have effectively removed many of the challenges they face in the way of "physical" harm....and now load em up with emotional trauma no little human should have to endure....like divorce, replacement parents, moving from place to place, scary neighborhoods and playgrounds, frightening strangers, educational challenge to be the "best", and all the crud the television set sends them (trying to take the place of parents).

Have you seen those scooters with the little engines now? Or the sneakers with the wheelies? The next generation will have custom thumbs for the Super-Nintendo.

God help us.

It all seems to be about Liability!!I heared on the radio this morning that the Ottawa School board is looking at banning Tag..TAG!! who can you grow up without playing tag!!!

It's odd that parents (the protecters of the children) by bikes for the kids, wheelies, motorized scooters and stick knives of their feet and give then sticks and hard pucks in the winter. But the schools are afraid they will be hurt playing..err TAG!! yeesch!!

Kill all the lawyers..Shakespeare was right!!

I agree. Adults these days also face more emotional trauma than previous generations; society tells us we aren't good looking enough, children are starving around the globe, terrorism, AIDS, nuclear war, global warming, ozone depletion, schoolyard shootings, etc. Its difficult to help our kids cope when we ourselves are weary.

Something that may help everyone is the idea that fun (including entertainment) and happiness are not the same things. Fun often requires little effort. Happiness on the other hand does take effort. People these days are over-entertained; 500 channels of tv, addictive video games, downloading any song you feel like at any time... After a hard day of work/school its so much easier to choose entertainment over chores.

Our egos want to control our actions by doing what feels good right now. We need to remember that we have a conciousness. We can chose our actions; I would rather play video games than do the dishes but I imagine how much more enjoyable the video games will be when I know that all my dishes are done.

Delayed gratification is a huge tool that we need to teach ourselves and our children.

One major reason why the government wants to make us as safe as possible is that when we are hurt the health care system loses money. Less injuries means more tax dollars to be spent elsewhere. By not getting hurt we are in a way contributing to society.

When things are made too safe, when the government has to much control over our lives, we feel hopelessness. We have hope when we believe that our actions can make a difference in our lives. Too much government control will end up costing tax dollars in the form of health care because we will be treating mentally and spiritually ill people, who have lost hope.

nawh..why would a school board care about health care cost....what they care about is their own Ass!!

It use to be a U.S. only issue; but is now part of the Canadian makeup. The "it's never my fault" "I take no responsibilty" reasoning. Years ago If someone threw a snowball and it hit someone, they would cry then they would stop crying and it would be over. If they cut you with the snowball, they would cry..you would see the nurse, get a bandaid and again it would be over.

Now if the kid comes home with a cut..he will be considered scared for life by his parents...It will be the school boards fault for not creating a safe enviroment and stopping the bully from using weapons (the snowball)and a laywer will be called and a lawsuit filed..
Damn we've all come to this.....afraid of the legal system instead of it being a good thing!!!

From what I'm being told this whole thing is over bullies on the playground. In the old days they would separate boys from girls. Because of things like Columbine Principals go to extremes.

http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/1998/schools/

partly but even with that, the old days 2 kids would hit each other then it would be over....

Beyond that though, it goes much further than the bully issue. playgrounds have been torn down because they are nor safe...by not safe I don't mean rusted out but that there is an possibility of getting hurt.

My parents have a park across the street from them. The play structure was always full of kids. On the riding horse, the merry-go-round or the monkey bars. We the city took it down because it was metal and could injure someone. The put up a "safe" structure instead....so safe it is boring. The kids now do not come to the park or use the equipment. What kind of progress is that!!

Oh thats right, the school board isn't the government, silly me... I'm not saying my post is wrong, just off topic.

Ya for sure. Should they ban pencils because kids might use them to stab other kids? Its just getting silly. Obviously we should try to make our children's environment as safe as possible. It is equally important to teach our children how to deal with difficult situations, which life is full of.

I was brought up in Seekonk the next town over. I was beatin regularly nearly every day from grade school to high school. I was put in the hospital twice and absolutely nothing was done other than "Oh kids will be kids" Im going blind because of that attitude. If it means taking away out door priveleges I say go for it. Make a point and let the bullies know it wont be tollerated. Then give the priveleges back after a set amout of time. Its NOT just two kids duking it out, it scars for life.

Thats the point...kids are not learning how to deal with the world..but rather who to prtect themselves from it.

There is also a larger point that we are all learning and teaching others NOT to have any respect. Few kids are mindful of elders or police etc. When they do cross a line the law does very little until it is an out of control situation.
