Carney added that defense cooperation could be part of the agreement, in which Canada wants all U.S. tariffs dropped on Canadian imports. Besides a 50% levy on steel and aluminum, the U.S. has imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian-assembled motor vehicles and goods that are not compliant with the existing U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, so….

If that’s what he means by “May” include? Hell, Carney can lease the US Navy a base at Guantanamo Bay and what difference would it make to tariffs that are supposedly economic tools for trade protection & not extortion tools for a prospective military base, right?

Defence cooperation & trade tariffs, should they be inter wound like that?

Who has their fingers all over every shipping route? Botswana or USA. Why would they stay away from the NWP?

They already own it . Just because we can’t see under the ice doesn’t mean they are there.

I was reading somewhere this morning that the US government has raked in 22Billion in tariffs last month. This has to be the greatest con job in raising taxes in history.

So roughly $55 from every man, woman, child, and the other 70-ish American genders in a month…so over 12 months that’s $660.00/American/annum or so?
Where's the con job? He raised taxes.
How long ‘till the next tea party or its modern equivalent?

That is the con. There would be a revolution if Trump told the faithful he was raising taxes. But paying tariffs on goods you can't or don't make at home is as American as pineapple pie.
What do you think abo Canadian tariffs ?

Sounds about right. I do believe your average MAGANazi will swear through a nine-inch plank that "Trump didn't raise taxes."

I originally thought that tit for tat tariffs were a good idea. I have now changed my mind. Mostly because I did some reading on tariffs, and found out exactly who pays, and more importantly where the money goes. To my mind, a far better plan is a consumer boycott. It is certainly not a political problem if, l in a free society, decide not to buy certain products. It does however send a clear message to the makers of those products.
To go along with this, since it is somewhat related, I object to Supply Management and intra provincial trade barriers for much the same reason. It simply adds costs to consumers and allows incompetent government bodies to chose winners and losers.
Even charging a fee for use of the Alaska highway fell by the wayside, when we found out the US government, or Alaska (it was not clear which) pays for some highway maintenance. This should be the basis for commercial ship traffic to Alaska to pony up for the supply of safety and marine disaster response up the inside passage, where none of this traffic leaves any money, but is exposed to all the hazards.
