This is one of those issues that we cannot merely act on what we feel or think at
the moment. There is no simple answer. I for example support the right for a
person to chose the end if there is no possible cure on the horizon. Having said
that however, we are living in a country that is abound with uncertainty and it also
has many cultures living within it.
In other words I do not want to see the procedure used to bump people off for a
quick payday. The other side of the coin is family control in some cultures. We
already have some with the warped opinion that honour killings are alright and we
don't want to open a new sad chapter in Canadian History that allows some to get
rid of the defenceless for a host of private reasons.
This should become part of a much larger discussion, and yes some people are not
going to see their dream enacted immediately The right outcome for the majority of
Canadians must be handled first however. I support the concept in principal but at
the open I don't think it should be an open season on the terminally ill quite yet.
As all things in society it does take time, and in a world of instant decisions, that
might not sit too well. No I don't regard the matter as stalling it should be discussed
thoroughly however, to find the safeguards that are required to protect the
vulnerable. Sometimes the vulnerable are those assisting, as well as people who
want to die, or in some cases are going to die that might not be quite so willing.
Let us get this right before we just go ahead and enact a law we might regret.
