The government should not be subsidizing any industry while the government has its own debts to pay.
Strong powerful and protective government is what they want.
A true conservative believes that if Ford can't build affordable trucks in the US, they should go elsewhere. Market forces will eventually work things out. Trumpites look to the government to get involved.
But in Trump's case, there's a strong ethnic motive. It's about promoting the myth of an ethnically Anglo heritage in the US. We don't hear him complaining too much about trade with the UK for example. It's Mexico and China.

There's definitely a racist component to his supporters but the Locs, Eaglesmacks and JLMs of the world weren't enough to give him the Whitehouse. He needed to attract enough people that want a nanny state.

He can't be successful. If he fulfils his promises, he'll tank the economy. If he backs away from his promises, the people will replace him with someone who is committed to fulfil those same promises.
Trump has effectively painted himself into a corner.
I believe Trumps economic policies will ultimately fail as most leftist policies do. I doubt his core supporters care about that.
How can that not be worth tanking the economy for. They might all be poor and unemployed, but at least they'll all be crying over the shoulder of an Anglo Saxon. Where's the pride in earning good money working for an educated spic, chink, or muzzie?
