That's exactly right. Intelligence is the ability to grasp new concepts, there is a vast difference between being educated and being
intelligent.

What my son, manager of a computer programming firm, has told me is that he gets new staff, graduates of programming courses, who cannot pinpoint a problem and therefore cannot correct it. They have to be walked through, shown where the problem lies and how to correct it.
That indicates to me (and to him) that the students are learning how technology works but not how to think out the logical process of analyzing. In other words, they are being told what to do, not how to recognize for themselves what to do and how to do it. Independent thinking is what is lacking. And I believe a lot of brilliant minds are going to waste because the basic principle of 'thinking' is passed over.

Absolutely bang on, D.M.!)

Only if you are considering yourself as the base model for the old group.

It's a big waste of time ts. He's light years away from getting the gist. :)

If you want an idea of what is wrong with the educational system talk to a teacher and you will get an ear-full. There are so many changes that are needed that it would take me several thousand words to properly explain them all. But let's just list one - for the most part too many educational systems ignore the needs of a very large part of the student population. In many educational systems students are crammed into a one-size-fits-all type of curriculum with supposed alternative streams essentially leading nowhere. What Canada really needs to look at is how other nations educate their populations and borrow the best from each. What also needs to be looked at is how changing technology can aid in learning and what can be done to streamline or reform traditional methods of teaching and learning.

what other nations? surely you are not suggesting we look to the USA. Teaching needs to go back to the 3 R's. I watch teens add things and it takes forever! I can tell they are picturing the stupid blocks they've been taught to put together to come up with the answer. They are allowed the use of calculators. Why? They use them nearly all year and at exam time, teacher says - no calculators! Their writing and even their printing is almost illegible! They don't memorize timetables. They need those memorized when it comes to Calculus .

Boomer, I'm not replying to you but whoever you are - you are not in the teaching field. Your and you're are two different words. Different topic!

The education system is Britain is skewed heavily in favour of girls. The entire education system, at primary level, secondary level, college level and university level, has been entirely and deliberately feminised, with the way pupils are taught being more suitable for the girls than the boys, with emphasis on coursework (which favours girls) rather than exams (which favours boys). As a resuly, girls are vatsly outperform boys throughout all levels of education today, and this fact is lauded in the media. But the only reason girls are outperforming boys (particularly white boys) is because of the sexist eduction system which gives them a far easier ride.

Something now needs to be done to address this unfair imbalance and steps need to be taken to give boys the proper education they need. I'm almost certain that when boys, rather than just the girls, are given a sutiable education which addresses their needs, then boys will start to outperform girls again at school. Girls only outperform boys not because they are clever (on average, boys are smarter) but because of the feminised education system.

That's THE big change which needs to occur in education - an end to the blatant feminised education system which gives girls an easy ride.

Boys are generally intelligent enough to be able to compensate for the difference!

Blackleaf's real message is "The educational system is slanted in favor of girls. I and the voices in my head want it slanted in favor of boys. Because that's just and fair."

Poor princess.

I don't know a lot about many country's education systems but I do know that China, Germany and Switzerland all have systems that are superior to ours. Education is a serious business to them and they make sure it is a priority to get it right.

I have a gut feeling (from experience with my own kids and several of my grand kids) that there's probably (quite) a few jurisdictions that would put our education system to shame. One is the bull sh*t message the teachers tried to convey here a couple of years ago that all the demands were for the kids. :) :)
