Idiocy!

Okay, let's get a few things straight.......

Japan was preparing to fight invading forces, drilling cvilians with spears, for God's sake, and had millions (that's MILLIONS) of third line soldiers ready to resist............

The estimates of casualties in an invasion of Japan run from one half million AMERICANS (not counting other allies) to one and a half million allied troops and SEVEN MILLION Japanese...........

The idea that Japan was ready to negotiate a "peace" is probably true.........so would any other combatant in any war if they could twist that truce to their advantage, leaving their system and parts of their Empire intact. The question is NOT Japan's willingness to "negotiate a peace" it is their UNWILLINGNESS to surrender.

Anthony Gregory is a moron. He makes that incredibly clear in his paragraph on the Japanese collapse.....yes, Japan was beaten, which didn't stop 92,000 Japanese soldiers from fighting to the death on Okinawa......Yes, Japan was beaten......which is why an entire village walked off a 400 foot cliff at Saipan......yes, Japan was beaten, which didn't prevent individual soldiers from refusing to surrender for DECADES! Gregory's big mistake (probably a result of his youth) is he is completely unable to grasp the idea that some folks think differently than he, that an entire culture and nation would be willing to commit national suicide rather than surrender, that sacrifice was the very essence of the Japanese psyche.

There was NOBODY that counted in Japan, there was NO power in Japan capable of negotiating peace, outside of the 6 members of the war council. AFTER the bomb on Nagasaki, they still couldn't agree to surrender, they split 3 vs 3, and so went to the Emperor, who decided the matter.......because the alternative was the complete destruction of the nation....

This stuff really pisses me off, because it is exactly this kind of weak-kneed, hand-wringing, obsession with past "wrongs" we have supposedly committed that leads to self-flagellation and self hatred so prevalent in western society. It will mean the downfall of western civilization, if we are not careful.......western civilization which is the absolute apex of human development.....that has made a huge number of human beings of the world rich, powerful, and free. Unfortunately, we now seem unable to deal effectively with a bunch of ignorant religious fanatics that hope to drag us back to the dark ages because we lack the fortitude, and the confidence to defy them, to corner them, to do what is necessary.

Great civilizations are self-confident, strong, and yes, gratuitously violent......if not, they loose to those that are.....and the barbarians are at the gates.

Thus endeth the sermon for the day.

Perhaps you could debate with some small reference to something with substance? For instance, which of the great civilizations does NOT fit my (way too limited) profile.....the Greeks? the Romans? the British?

BTW the barbarians are hiding out in Pakistan, trying to figure out how to retake Afghanistan or how to get their hands on nuclear weapons..........God help us if they succeed in either endeavour.
