The image you have about a person, the image you have about your politicians, the prime minister, your god, your wife, your children—that image is being looked at. And that image has been created through your relationship, or through your fears, or through your hopes. The sexual and other pleasures you have had with your wife, your husband, the anger, the flattery, the comfort, and all the things that your family life brings—a deadly life it is—have created an image about your wife or husband. With that image you look. Similarly, your wife or husband has an image about you. So the relationship between you and your wife or husband, between you and the politician is really the relationship between these two images. Right? That is a fact. How can two images which are the result of thought, of pleasure and so on, have any affection or love?So the relationship between two individuals, very close together or very far, is a relationship of images, symbols, memories. And in that, how can there be real love?

China, if this is a sample of your usual thought pattern, I know what image your wife will have of you. No, I will not share it. I am not a homewrecker.

stop right there.

I think this is a false assumption.

I think the relationship surely includes the images of the two, and is influenced by them, and may even be enhanced by them, but is surely not wholly of them and nothing else. Love still includes the ego of the present, as well as the id of the past

I think you're saying we love the construct and not the actual other.

Your question is strange to me, "real love" why not ask, how there can be love? How can there be god ? How can there be time? How can there be hate?:love9:

China, thanks for the good wishes. I think I'm feeling better. Geez, I hope. Your wandering prose does give me a headache but maybe this is my penance. Hmmm...

China, image is only a small part of people's perceptions of each other. Someone did a study in Ireland once about the redheads, blondes, and the dark haired ones. Found they were genetically prone to marrying those of similar hair colors and complexions. There's also the sound of voices, the touch of their significant others, etc. as well as things they have in common and personalities.

I did type out an answer to this question, read it over, then read your question again, then, deleted.

chickened out - whatever, too confusing.

isn't your image of something/someone, what you would "like" it/them to be in "your" perfect life, if
that was possible?

A small part, unless it is of a social nature. there have been numerous studies conducted which suggest that we as people tend to look at the surface of the people we meet, and form a perception of these people based on the external image we perceive.

Which leads us to realize that many things within and around us we must accept at FAITH value, faith that we have love, faith that there is a God, faith that we are loved.

Sanctus reminds me of an old Donne line: "Then you will be true to those that are false to you." Gosh, as the years go by our perceptions are poisoned. No wonder we get crotchety.

Good point. You look like a nice guy, but .......... :D

Exactly. External image plays a huge part in our perceptions of people. Look at, for example, Marilyn Monroe. One could argue that half of her success was due to her looks, because our IMAGE of her was she must be a great person because she was so beautiful. Another example would be Elvis. dosen't matter about what we think of his music, but the guy was handsome, no dobut about it. Thus, we perceived an image of him based on his external apperance.

lol I was kidding, Sanc. I approach people with a smile and friendliness, whether it's returned or not creates my impression of people.
Then there's folks like Donald Trump. Can't stand to listen to him, can't stand to look at him (keep wanting to fix that idiotic hairdo for him; with a lawnmower). Heard him before I saw him.

sometimes i think we are too uptight about our own images of who we really are. like we play head games with each other pretending to be something were not and then we freak out when we cant live up to our own images of oursleves. know what i mean?

talloola ;

What about that image we see in the mirror, do we see the "real" person, or what we want to see.

I don't think you see the person as much as his physical features .

I think we see what we want to see. You know how it is werid hearing your own voice on a tape recorder? I think it'd be weird if we could see ourselves as others see us.
