That is a concept not enough people understand these days. Put in old fashioned lingo- "you reap what you sow".
my buddies say,
"Johnnny you so lucky to be able to rent cars all the time"
"Johnnny your so lucky to have the oppourtunity to work everywhere"
"johnnny your so lucky to be able to go back to school when you felt like it"

I worked and saved my money and earned the right to do all these things, luck had nothing to do with it
That is good, Johnny, I admire you for that. As the old saying goes "you mainly have to make your own luck". As opposed to you too many these days expect everything to be handed to them.
Some people say a man is made out of mud well a poor man's made outta
muscle and blood..Muscle and blood and skin and bone..and a mind
that's weak..but a back thats strong.
And he was born one morning when the sun didn't shine..
He picked up his shovel and he went to the mines
He loaded 16 tons of that number 9 coal..Til-
the Straw boss said Well-uh b-less my soul!
You load 16 tons and whaddaya get??
another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don'tcha call me 'Cause-
I can't go...I owe my soul to the Company

Thomas Alva Edison said something like that where the harder he worked the luckier he got. Also, when he was asked about failure he said something to the effect that he hadn't failed but, "I've just discovered 10,000 ways (something) doesn't work". I've misplaced my book of quotes, but there are some good ones.
