Obama started with 55 Democrat senators. After the mid-term elections he had 51. They need 60 to avoid filibuster.

Yes they needed a super majority to avoid a fillibuster.
Just because there is a fillibuster does not mean they were unable to do whatever they wished. They passed Health Care under the conditions you just mentioned. The reason it took so long is because it was publicly unpopular and the Democrats all wanted a little something-something for their constituents.
They also passed massive spending measures with impunity, bail outs, TARP, and the GOP could not do a thing about it.
The Democrats controlled both the Senate and House of Representatives and the Executive Office.
