I know of at least 1 senior who has moved to Mexico because he can live quite nicely on CPP and OAS there. He can't afford to live here on that same pension. Hopefully, he'll stay safe...

I agree that we're too materialistic. Rather than needs vs. wants, it's wants vs. needs. Seems there are too many of us who don't know how to live within our means and credit is too easily accessed and there is no discipline when it comes to using said credit. But then, of course, it's the credit card companies fault that credit is so easily accessed - no personal responsibility because it's someone else's fault.

No one needs 26 or 28 credit cards; 1 should do fine. I have travelled to many countries including the US and have never needed more than my VISA. Then, there are those who have made this statement .... "but the credit card company keeps raising my limit" and I ask them back - did it not occur to you to call them and tell them to lower it back and the response is... oh, I can do that? Seriously??

Yes, the cost of living in Canada is high but it's not the poor people who are going bankrupt!! They've learned to live with what they get and can't afford or are not eligible to have credit cards. It's the ones who make a good living who can't seem to control their spending and save for a rainy day. They must have their toys, their trips, big homes etc. Can't live in an 1100 sq. ft. house - nope, it's gotta be at least 2,500 sq. ft. if not more. Need to show everyone how good we're doing.... yep.

But those retirees should show some patriotism by starving in Canada and spending their pension here to create jobs. We need to build a wall to keep retirees in Canada.

Make Canada great again, comrades.

I have about 8 credit cards, but I've never carried a balance in 30 some years. Whatever card I use gets paid off when the bill comes in.

A well written post, Dixie and every word of it is true. And one more piece of advice...................VISA is much more reputable than the obvious alternative. I found out the hard way.

You want Canada to be better? Try leaving the country. As I've pointed out there are lots of suitably racist nations where you will be more comfortable.

Wait a minute! If immigration causes a net gain for the country, then why should any taxpayer be burdened with the cost? Figure out where the gains are going and have those people to reinvest.

That's why I like the idea of freedom of movement. It just means you can visit, study, work, or do business on your own dime, not collect social assistance.

If I'm not mistaken, most if not all international students do need a student visa. But yes, I'd get rid of the visa requirement for anyone who wants to visit, study, work, or do business in Canada.

The more taxpayers, the merrier.

You have, what I refer to my clients as, having "discipline" which seems to be a rare commodity now-a-days.

Just sayin'
