Unfortunately, our society has sunk so low, that to the likes of empty-headed Simon Cowell and the fans of his idiotic show looks are more important than talent.

It is a lead-pipe cinch that these bozoes (judges and audience) would have laughed Pavarotti out of the place. After all, only his mother (or his secretary)could have ever claimed that he was handsome. And sadly, half of these bozoes (judges and audience) would still be laughing after Pavarotti started to sing.

Susan Boyle is pure and one of a kind. I truly would like her to win the British Idol contest.

Now, I absolutely loved her performance and all, but, pure? That seems like a pretty grand statement to make when you have no clue what she might be like, truly.

She is pure of voice and nature - she is well spoken of by all who know her and I hope she goes far - she deserves to.

Am I the only one who suspects that little viral video was set up by tv producers and directors deliberately to push exactly the buttons it's pushing in everybody?

Ah...Balls....We only know what we see. That talent show, Britain's got Talent, has been going on for about three years and apparently some good people have come out of it.. Susan Boyle struck me as an honest lady with a lot of courage who sung her heart out under crappy conditions, in front of a noisy audience. One of the judges...The blonde, stood up twice during her performance like she didn't know where the ending was.....This, among other things, suggests to me that everything was on the up and up. I believe that she is what she says she is and I hope she does well in her belated professional singing career.

There is enough information on the web about Susan Boyle to quell most nay-sayers. The people in her home town know all about her.

Well, considering the cultural and intellectual wasteland that most of television is, I'm immediately prepared to believe the worst of most of the people in charge of putting it together. I don't doubt Susan Boyle's genuineness, she has a lovely voice and I certainly think she deserves a break, but I'd be very surprised if the producers and directors of that program didn't know anything about the quality of her talent and the effect it'd have. A common feature of programs like that one is public humiliation, some versions of it even run complete programs of outtakes once or twice a year to show us people who really were awful. They're just tarted up versions of that awful old program called The Gong Show. Her appearance on the program was set up from the beginning to generate the expectation that this was going to be a horrible embarrassment for her. One thing tv producers and directors know is how to manipulate an audience, and I simply don't believe that nobody involved with manufacturing that program had ever heard her sing before she got up on stage.

Who knows for sure Dexter. All three judges in separate interviews claimed that if they had heard the performers before they came out it it would spoil the spontaneity of the show. I know this doesn't prove anything but the bulk of what I have seen convinces me that these three are not capable of the kind of subterfuge you are suggesting.

Btw, Susan Boyle did karaoke in her home town of Blackburn. There is no reason somebody couldn't have seen her there but I think we are getting a little too convoluted.

In your favour, If I was running that show I would want a preview of the performers before we hit live TV. So, as I said, "Who Knows?"

What does it matter if they knew? Now the world knows Susan Boyle. We're lucky, she's lucky. It's a win win no matter how you see it.

Bah humbug! Susan rules! She has more talent in her little finger than half the fluff on MTV. It's very likely the judges and staff around that show knew about her abilities. The cameras kept cutting to the two stage hands off to the side and they appeared to know full well what was about to happen. So what? It was a great lesson to all of us. She represents a lot of people who for whatever reason do not get to realize their dreams and their true potential. Susan has shown us that true talent can rise above adversity and win out in the end.

It matters because if they did then her appearance on the program was a deliberate setup by the media to manipulate our emotions and increase the program's visibility. Those programs are often pretty cruel to the performers, and a lot of people seem to get a kick out of seeing others publicly humiliated, but on some level they know that's not nice. Every now and then such programs will toss out an emotional bone to chew on, so people can think, "Hey, we *do* appreciate real talent when we see it, we're not so bad." There's got to be some sort of selection or screening process to appear on such a program, you can't just waltz in off the street, say you want to go on, and get a place in the queue. I think they had to know what she could do, and they set it up for maximum emotional impact.

Call me a cynic (and I'd immediately agree with you), but I smell manipulation here. Though I don't for a second think Susan Boyle was part of it. She's an innocent, and I'm happy for her that she's had this break. She really does have a great gift, and it deserves to be shared and appreciated. And I freely confess, when she started to sing and the audience first shut up in awed silence and then leaped to its feet cheering and clapping, I welled up a bit. You'd have to be made of stone not to respond emotionally to what happened there. But let's keep some perspective; the media know how to manipulate people.

I fail to see who's ox got gored here other than Susan's. Two of the three judges, Amanda Holden, Piers Morgan. all but fell over themselves apologizing for not treating Susan Boyle better. Simon Cowell eventually fell in with the others. As insulting as it was, Morgan bent over backwards to expressed how surprised he was that Boyle could sing. Presumably, because she was so plain, she was expected to stand on stage and drool to the music or something. Amanda Holden seemed to admit similar feelings. By the end of it all, Susan got the three yesses that she needed to move on to the next level. There was no conspiracy here. The three judges had the subtlty of a trio of goats. If I were Susan I would ask them to fold it into a point and shove it.

Just proving that she is rather simple minded and naive.. and these are not qualities seen often in show biz.

I don't think she is that simple minded. She is starting a bit late but she seems to have a firm idea what she wants to do. I just hope she gets a good manager that works for her rather than Simon Cowell

I whole-heartedly agree - she's the salt of the earth and I hope she finds someone who will keep her feet on the ground and save her from the wolves that will inevitably come sniffin' around.

The wolves are already sniffing. I thought I heard earlier today that she was offered big bucks to do a porn movie...

Not heard that one - what an insult! Still, I think the majority will be more interested in what comes out of her mouth rather than what goes in the other end.

I watched the first video and the lady does have an amazing voice but poor looks and a great voice aren't that uncommon actually.

A lot of studio singers are amazing but because they don't have that celebrity sheen, if you like, the studio is as far as they get.

The same goes with musicians. The best players are studio musicians. They're just older, not interested in the lifestyle, too shy or some other reason, so they spend their careers making Disney artists look good.
