Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross,
To see a fine lady upon a white horse;

The statue of the "fine lady" at Banbury in Oxfordshire.

It was unveiled in April 2005 - exactly ten years ago - by the Princess Royal and depicts the Fine Lady upon a White Horse of the nursery rhyme. It stands on the corner of West Bar and South Bar, just yards from the present Banbury Cross.

Banbury Cross itself, near to the statue:

At one time Banbury had many crosses (The High Cross, The Bread Cross and The White Cross), but these were destroyed by Puritans on 26 July 1600. Banbury remained without a cross for more than 250 years until the current Banbury Cross was erected in 1859 at the centre of the town to commemorate the marriage of Victoria, Princess Royal (eldest child of Queen Victoria) to Prince Frederick of Prussia. The current Banbury Cross is a stone, spire-shaped monument decorated in Gothic form. Statues of Queen Victoria, Edward VII and George V were added in 1914 to commemorate the coronation of George V. The cross is fifty-two feet six inches high, and topped by a gilt cross.

The English nursery rhyme "Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross" (published in 1784, and has a Roud Folk Song Index number of 21143), in its several forms, may refer to one of the crosses destroyed by Puritans in 1600.

Wow, a Rothschild workhorse to boot. Why do I get the impression our collars just got tightened another notch?
The fact the leader of the Western world would fall like Humpty Dumpty should the horse even stumble let alone take off after the foxes isn't at all comforting btw. (her sons should come blasting past on each side so the stirrups actually touch)

I bet she does a lot of that in private at home.

I often try to picture her and Prince Philip in the evenings watching telly. It seems strange the pair of them just snuggled up on the sofa together watching Coronation Street or Pointless or Broadchurch (she's also a big fan of The X Factor, apparently). But they must do. You can imagine her watching the football, shouting "CROSS IT IN! CROSS IT IN, YOU IDIOT!" at the screen.

By the way, the photo above is Coronation Street's Bet Lynch with the Queen's face superimposed.

Her Father, George VI, a chain smoker, died of lung cancer at 56.. but if you've made it to 88 in good enough condition to ride a horse.. i guess you can't be faulted on your 'bad' habits.

It was numerous things which killed him. The stress of the war had taken its toll on the king's health, which was made worse by his smoking, which caused lung cancer (he had his left lung removed in 1951). But he also had arteriosclerosis and thromboangiitis obliterans.
