Stephen Harper Takes Oilsands Message To American Audience

Our Prime Minister Stephen Harper is talking tough with our largest trading partner U S of A starting in 2015 Canada will be charging closer to world prices just because we will be supplying more of the oil market.

First of all I would never see the day that a Reform/Conservative government would ever talk tough to the Americans and when did the Reform/Conservatives stop licking their boots.

Stephen Harper is looking more like the former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau who stood up to the Americans.

Strategically speaking did our Prime Minister drop the ball too soon before the infrastructure of the pipeline is even built?

What is to stop the Americans to totally stop the pipeline building from the Canada/US border and down?

The Conservatives are not known for thinking ahead because they always manage to shoot themselves in the foot.

Unfortunately I think we need the Americans almost at most reasonable cost. Without them, we would not have the quality of life we now have. They are close, big traders and fairly reasonable to deal with.

Rare that I agree with you. In fact this might be the first time. The same does hold true for them needing us as well. It is a good idea to diversify more when it comes to trading partners. Particularly now with the US in fairly rough shape politically and economically.

Does the Athabasca not already have toxins in it from the mining process?

The deposit is right next to the river,most of the toxins came from the pulp mills upstream.
Tailings ponds will soon be all gone and reclaimed as the new method of adding polyfloc to settle the mft is being used industry wide.

So they did add toxins, plus air pollution, plus greenhouse gasses and who knows what other kinds of poisons.

But I do not agree with your implication that they need us as much as we need them.
The US buys something like 87% of our exports, while we only buy about 24% of their exports. So the US could get by quite easily if they were to reduce their exports to us by half, whereas we, on the other hand would be devestated if we lost half of our exports to the US.
