Spray-painted swastika, slur shock Ottawa rabbi

OTTAWA — An Ottawa rabbi says she was shocked to find a red swastika and anti-Semitic slur spray-painted on her front door in the dead of night.

Anna Maranta, who runs a Jewish faith centre from her home, says she has never experienced anything like the vandalism that left her shaken.

Maranta reported the incident to the Ottawa police hate crimes unit, which sent an officer to investigate today.

Ottawa Liberal MP David McGuinty condemned the attack in the House of Commons, calling on fellow MPs to make it clear that religiously motivated assaults are contrary to Canadian values and principles.

Jewish group B'nai Brith Canada says a swastika was also discovered Monday on the wall of Hof Kelsten, a well-known Jewish bakery in Montreal.

B'nai Brith notes the attacks in Canada follow a number of similar incidents across the United States, as well England, where vans used by a Jewish school were recently defaced by swastikas.

Are these the same values and principles we shouldn't be testing immigrants for? Let me see...white people doing racially or religiously motivated acts is wrong, Muslims doing racially or religiously motivated act is just fine. Got it!

Does it confuse you that a Jew would have Jewish friends with Jewish families? I know many people who have family that were in camps, I just mentioned the ones I know well and have talked about it with.

Ottawa has had another two new graffiti attacks on place of worship — this time at Parkdale United Church and the Ottawa Mosque.

Some sprayed swastikas and slurs about black people on the doors of the church at Parkdale and Gladstone avenues on Thursday night.

There were more swastikas, slurs and “go home” spray-painted on the Ottawa Mosque on Northwestern Avenue.

These follow spray-paint attacks involving swastikas and anti-Jewish slurs in the past week, first at Kehillat Beth Israel congregation near Carling and Kirkwood, and later at a small prayer centre in the Glebe, and at Congregation Machzikei Hadas in Featherstone Park.

It’s the second such attack this year at Parkdale United. The first came last January just before a service planned for Martin Luther King Day. At the time, Rev. Anthony Bailey told a Citizen reporter: “If I could ever meet these perpetrators, I’d love to take them to lunch and sit down and talk with them about why they believe the way they do and invite them to a different way of looking at how we ought to live together.

“They’ll get a free lunch out of it if nothing else.”

ith one song you mentioned just a few minutes ago, 'Hey Jude,' everyone was trying to figure out who Jude was.

I happened to be driving out to see Cynthia Lennon. I think it was just after John and she had broken up, and I was quite mates with Julian (their son). He's a nice kid, Julian. And I was going out in me car just vaguely singing this song, and it was like "'Hey, Jules." I don't know why, "Hey, Jules." It was just this thing, you know, "Don't make it bad/Take a sad song…" And then I just thought a better name was Jude. A bit more country and western for me.

In other words, it was just a name. It was just like "'Hey Luke" or "Hey Max" or "Hey Abe", but "Hey Jude" was better.

To one fellow Jude meant Jew, "Juden Raus," "Jew Get Out." At the time we had the Apple shop. I went in one night and put whitewash on all the windows and rubbed out 'Hey Jude' as a big ad. I thought it was a great thing, nothing happening in the shop, let's use the window as a big advertising thing for the record.

So I did this 'Hey Jude' right across the window and some feller from a little Jewish delicatessen rang up the office the next day. He said "If my sons vere vif me, I'd sent von of them round to kill you. Yuu are doing this terrible thing with the Jewish name. NEW YORK — A Brooklyn playground named for the late Beastie Boys’ star Adam Yauch had been vandalized with swastikas and the words “Go Trump!”
Photos show the swastika and words were spray-painted on playground equipment in the Brooklyn Heights neighbourhood.
The city named the park for the late rapper, who was Jewish, in 2013. He died of cancer in 2012 at the age of 47.
New York City Councilman Brad Lander said police were investigating and a Parks Department spokesman said Saturday the graffiti was removed.
It was one of several recent instances of the Nazi symbol being found around New York and in other parts of the country.
The playground includes basketball courts, a community garden, a greenhouse, fitness area, an open play space, drinking fountains and a dog run.
