I wonder how long they'll last. Spaceflight has been rather limited in the last couple decades.

What are you talking about; more people go to space now and we put more stuff in space than ever before.

This is great, just like the beginning of the Internet.. letting private enterprise take over.. I think we have yet to see a Google X

Only a few hundred km up. People havent left low Earth orbit since the 70s.
There are more bots heading to planets and stars and asteroids than ever before. Much cheaper than sending men.

If man went to Mars would you see it with your own eyes or would you see it on a screen? Would probe video look any different on your screen than human taken video?
It would be more interesting if the astronauts got eaten by alien monsters. I think we should learn to take care of our own planet befor we go screwing up others.

Are more people and more things going to space now because of free enterprise?

But aside from that, I'm happy to see SpaceX doing well. I brought this company up some time ago when people whom I thought were supporters of free enterprise complained about the NASA gap with the ending of the Shuttle program.

Some don't know that JPL is seperate from NASA.

No they aren't. They are as separate from NASA as the Goddard Institute for Space Studies is. Investigate where the JPL budget comes from. It's NASA.

It generates more interest in the public. I'll follow the exploits of probes or manned missions. But the public generally wont. Their interest is needed to make any quick advances. Advances came very quickly in the 60s because everyone was interested in seeing it succeed. They probably wouldnt have been if the mission was to send a probe to the moon.

I doubt something like that will happen again til the Chinese become a large presense in space. Competition worked last time.
