Opponents of health-care law turn to faith-based nonprofits to cover medical expenses

By Sandhya Somashekhar, Published: June 5

Susan Tucker is one of millions of Americans who dislike the health law and want nothing to do with it. But the 54-year-old Venice, Fla., homemaker took her opposition a step further: She opted out.

Tucker dropped the private health plan she had carried for more than a decade and joined Christian Healthcare Ministries, a faith-based nonprofit in which members pool their money to pay for one another’s medical needs — and promise to adhere to biblical values, such as attending church and abstaining from sex outside marriage.

“When all this came up with the ACA, I just realized I don’t want to be a part of any of this,” said Tucker, who views the Affordable Care Act as the government meddling in her personal health care. The Christian Healthcare program is not as comprehensive as insurance — she has to pay for her preventive care, for example — but the monthly payment of $150 can’t be beat, she said.

Tucker is part of a small but growing group of Americans whose opposition to the Affordable Care Act is spurring them to seek out alternatives, choosing once-fringe methods to pay for their medical care in an effort to skirt the many requirements the law imposes on the private health insurance market.

The result is a burgeoning business among brokers, clinics and insurers that are advertising themselves as a way to avoid the sweeping federal program. The options range from Christian co-ops such as Tucker’s to membership-based primary-care clinics to insurance policies that cover specific diseases, such as cancer.

In some cases, such as Tucker’s, the options are permitted by the health law; the people who sign up don’t have to pay the penalty for not carrying adequate coverage. In other cases, the options are not sanctioned by the law, leaving people on the hook to pay the fine. But some critics of the law say that even with the penalty, the alternatives are worth it.

Advocates and health-policy experts say there are risks in addition to the penalty. The programs typically do not carry the law’s consumer protections, such as a bar on insurers refusing to cover preexisting conditions. Consumers won’t be eligible for federal subsidies to help them pay their premiums. They could get stuck with unpaid medical bills.

While some of the plans might “make sense” for healthy consumers, “a lot of this stuff is truly just junk coverage,” said Sabrina Corlette, project director at Georgetown University’s Center on Health Insurance Reforms. She said consumers should be especially wary of specialty or partial plans being marketed as traditional coverage.

Critics of the health-care law counter that these options can be a good deal for consumers — even if they have to pay the penalty. Because many of the plans do not include mental health or maternity coverage, they can be cheaper than the policies offered by the new online marketplaces. And since the plans often do not create networks of doctors, patients are free to choose the physicians they want.

First case of Obamacare ID theft? Data found in Conn. backpack

Officials in Connecticut are investigating what could be the first known case of ID theft related to Obamacare enrollment information, it was revealed Friday.

As many as 400 people enrolled in Connecticut's state-run Obamacare exchange may have had their Social Security numbers and other personal information stolen, officials said Friday afternoon.

The "very serious" data breach came to light Friday when a person found a backpack on a street in downtown Hartford, the state's capital, which contained "four notepads with personal information for approximately 400 individuals," according to Kevin Counihan, CEO of the Access Health CT exchange. Access Health is located on the street where the backpack was found with the handwritten notes...

Eagle,

Well genius, we are still awaiting your Republican plan that would save the lives now being saved by Obamacare. You've had at least six years to put one in place but you've offered nothing. Small wonder why 18+ million have signed on to ACA and abandoning the great ingenuity of the Republican party.

Even the pro business Forbes magazine acknowledges this truth:

ACA: Now Serving Millions...So Far - Forbes

this line is very important:

through the ACA implementation in care delivery, we are seeing growing interest and activity in something important – more citizens participating in their own health. More personal responsibility in terms of health and healthcare is often discussed and highly recommended. The “health consumerism” movement is growing and will need to continue to do so dramatically to address individual and systematic improvements in health measures.

Yes, people's lives are being saved and improved thanks to ACA. That means more votes for the Dems and more future political victories.

Two and a half million enrollment applications can't be processed because of discrepancies between tax returns and enrollment application income data. Too many enrollees are seeking subsidies they don't qualify for.

New Hampshire is the latest state to applaud Obamacare:

Letter: Obamacare is a success | Concord Monitor

The Affordable Care Act is working in New Hampshire.

Despite the political ads on WMUR or the negative letters to the editors, thousands and thousands of New Hampshire citizens are better off now.

For example, the Part A Trust Fund of Medicare is fully funded until 2026 instead of 2016. Seniors in the “doughnut hole” have been saving money on prescriptions since 2010. Medicare is better off, and seniors should be cheering.

If you are a young adult and presently being insured under your parents’ policy because of the ACA, you are better off. Obamacare is giving you a chance to adjust to the work world.

If you have been sick and no longer have to worry about pre-existing conditions, you are better off now.

If you are among the working poor who are eligible for insurance in New Hampshire under Medicaid, you are better off now. You have a chance at early detection and all the other benefits of good health care.

I take the opportunity to talk to relatives and friends about health care. The answer that I am getting most often is that we have better coverage at a lower price because of Obamacare. Some of them are really surprised.

We need to thank Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter for sticking their political necks out for us. They need to know that we are thankful.

^ except that your video quotes a Forbes report that quotes a report from January which alleged costs were going up and coverage down and was fully debunked here:

Four new Americans for Prosperity ads take on Obamacare - The Washington Post

By contrast we have this TRUTH from June:

New Hampshire Obamacare Options Improve - Business Insider

Now that the state has it the costs are going down and coverage expanding.

In the past without coverage they would have croaked and society would have to foot the bill. Now with coverage they live on, work, and repay with the taxes they generate every year. Better to have those bills paid unlike the past.

''
Americans are finding very affordable health insurance and a wide choice of plans on the exchanges operated by the federal government, according to a report issued Wednesday by the Department of Health and Human Services. The report was based on data from the 36 states in which the federal government is operating health insurance exchanges this year ...

The survey found that nearly six in 10 people who bought insurance through the exchanges were previously uninsured, a good sign that the law’s goal of near-universal coverage may be achievable. Though the system is still new, millions of Americans are already being helped, and every success makes it that much harder for its political enemies to repeal or disable it.''

Good news, indeed. :)

18 million more covered by that same guy - good of him to do that. Now if only Congress can be persuaded to bring about the same reform promised in the August 2008 DNC meeting, more people would get covered and they could keep their doctors of choice. Sure as heck beats not having affordable doctors as in the days of Republiconcare.

Federal insurance exchange subsidies cut premiums by average of 76%, HHS reports - The Washington Post

''The Americans who qualify for tax credits through the new federal insurance exchange are paying an average of $82 a month in premiums for their coverage — about one-fourth the bill they would have faced without such financial help, according to a new government analysis ... the report’s results buttress the Obama administration’s contention that the new insurance marketplaces are working ... the report found that more competition among health plans tends to lower prices ...''
