Northern Ontario,
That sounds traumatic. :(

Lol.

I didn't cry but I do remember it felt horrible awkward and I was convinced I'd never get used to it.
While the Vic 20 had only joysticks ....the commodore had a mouse of sort.....now that's a bit far back to remember correctly,, but the floppy drive did use real soft floppies:lol:

I remember the joysticks, lol. And I remember those great big floppy disks too.

DOS, those were the days. Back when windows was something on the wall that you looked out of.

I dislike mice. Scrolling is limited and elbows get sore. Trackballs are awesome. Good finger exercise, too, and you don't need 4 hectares of desk space or pads for them.

I have a touch pad scroll mouse at home (with the Mac) and a roller ball mouse at work (on Windows). I like my Apple mouse I have to admit. But it messes me up every morning when I get to work because the scroll is in the opposite direction. :D

#1 - Alt+F4 on the desktop will bring up the Standard shutdown for Window 7, Vista, XP, 2000, 98, NT, 95 and 3.11 if I remember that far back

#2 - Windows Key for 95 and newer Windows to bring up the Start menu. Cycle highlighted buttons using the arrow keys until Shutdown is selected and hit Enter.

#3 - If Windows key is not on your keyboard, hit Ctrl+Esc to bring up the Start Menu. Repeat #2 instructions.

#4 - If you setup the power functions in the display / control panel section properly, hitting the power button once will shutdown the system properly (typically only for Pentium II or newer systems.)

#5 - Ctrl+Alt+Del will bring up the Task Manager on Win 95 or newer OS's and you can Tab/Arrow/Enter through that window until you get to the shutdown section.
Pretty much all Windows OS's can be navigated and controlled by only using the Keyboard and no mouse.... My old 386 didn't have a mouse for a few months when I first got it and that was the only way I could use it.

You can also cycle through the various sections of the Windows Desktop by using the Tab key while keeping an eye out for which section is highlighted and hitting Enter or the Arrow Keys to navigate within each tabbed section.

With Windows 8, generally hitting the power button will automatically shutdown the system properly. For every other version, one of the above should generally work.

Yup, two button mouse, Atari Joysticks, 5" floppies or cassette tape or cartridge, turbo cartridge to load and operate faster, a keyboard that was like 6 in one with all the other characters along the sides of each.

I even had the Geos Operating System... Fun times.

Or you could use a real OS like Linux and not have to be concerned about whether the mouse works or not, you can always get a terminal session up and shut it down from there.

In order of increasing severity:

  1. Hit alt-f4 until all other programs are closed. Alt-f4 on desktop opens the shutdown dialog.
  2. Hit windows key-r, type shutdown /s /f. (Also useful for aborting a shutdown: shutdown /a)
  3. Hit ctrl-shift-esc to open the task manager, hit alt-f to select the file menu, select run with the arrow keys. Type shutdown /s /f.
  4. Use ctrl-alt-del and select task manager, follow remaining part of step 3.
  5. Hold the power button for an extended period of time.
  6. Unplug it.
  7. Flip the breaker for the electricity to the room it is in.
For the linux fan, replace step 2's shutdown command with cmd, and then type shutdown /s /f into the command prompt. ;)

Northern Ontario,
In windows 7, if you have your PC on automatic updates, certain updates install themselves on restart, others on shutdown (if you have ever noticed that sometimes shut down takes longer than usual)
When you don't shut down properly, you end up with a failed update.
That is what happened to my wife's Notebook a few months ago, because she had the bad habit of shutting down sometimes using the power button.
That's also the reason she called me when her mouse quit working this time.
A few months before, what I had to do to fix that failed update, was to restore her notebook to before the update, then reinstall manually all the following updates.
This is why I got my laptop set up to warn me of pending updates and I install them when I have the time, because it has happened a few times on the road, when I have to pack up the computer to go somewhere and have to wait for a slow shut-down because of updates.......even just an extra minute seems like a long time when you're in a hurry....:-(

Can any of you nerds remember how????

Last night my wife was using the old PC downstairs while doing the laundry......Just as she had shut the browsers down and was ready to come upstairs the wireless mouse quits on her.....She hollers to me upstairs to bring a battery down to her...which is normally why a mouse quits, so I bring down a battery and battery tester but after tinkering with it for a few minutes I realized it was dead.
Since it was too late to go to the store to buy a new one....my wife went upstairs to get the mouse out of her notebook, just to shut down the PC...
While she was gone upstairs I remembered how to do it without a mouse....something I hadn't done in about 10 or 12 years.
Not too bad for an old fart to remember something he hasn't done more than a couple of times and that far back.....
you can also try this,ctrl+f4,and use the cursor to make the shutdown selection..thanks

I suppose just pushing the on button is too simple? With our much older computer we have to push and hold it down till it shuts off.

Does everyone remember the first time you used a mouse? Was everyone thinking "I'll never get used to this!" or was it just me? Lol

I had few problems with my first mouse...........I did have big problems learning how to use the touch pad on my lap top at first.

Ahem......just tap the power button on any windows xp or win7 computer. This does not trigger a power supply shutdown, instead it triggers a software initiated shutdown.

This is how IT guys will shut down a whole room of computers, not once do they touch a mouse.
