After a significant controversy surrounding where his primary residence really is, The Honourable Senator Mike Duffy (Prince Edward Island) has stated that he is going to repay his living allowances back to The Honourable the Senate. A senator is entitled to receive up to $21,000 per annum to defray the costs of a second home in the National Capital Region, when the senator keeps a primary residence in the province the senator represents.

Senator Duffy has blamed the entire controversy on the Senate itself, claiming that the rules of the Senate, and the administrative forms through which one claims the expenses, are too confusing. I, for one, do not buy it; when I am confused about expenses at my workplace, I ask someone more experienced, or someone with administrative authority, to explain to me how it's supposed to work.

The controversy may not be entirely put to rest, though.

The Constitution Act, 1867 sets out that for a person to be eligible to become and to continue to be an honourable senator, they must be resident in the province they represent. Senator Duffy stated that his Prince Edward Island residence is a "winter home," so certainy he cannot be said to be resident there in the context of the constitution. We'll see what happens; Senator the Honourable Marjory LeBreton P.C. (Ontario), the Leader of Her Majesty's Government in the Senate, has stated that an investigation is ongoing.

Good for him. Now if only the ON Liberals would return the money given to Ornge, E-health, people building non-existent gas power plants...
All of these are scandals cost hundreds of millions of dollars each. Typical Liberals.

”For Duffy is an honourable man;
So are they all, all honourable men."

And Duffy is an honourable man.
You all did see that in the interview.
We thrice presented him a kingly allowance,
Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?

I imagine that repaying 21k per year is going to be a bitch. No one should have to do this if they are mis-instructed by their HR. Everyone should have to do this if they knowingly decieved the process. It is still unclear to me, if Duffy was ill advised.

He was ill advised to use a system of theft which has been used for years by many of them. oops we are starting to require honesty and smart use of tax payers funds since the trough is low... he a smart man and if he isn't his accountant is... chances of being caught likely less than 10% ... sometimes the odds turn. I used to respect him. Now he will have to earn it again.

"I hope it reassures Islanders and Canadians that the old Duff, the Duff they've known and trusted, would never do anything wrong. I would never knowingly fiddle anything," Duff said.

Donnie- February 12, 2013 at 18:35:41 How discouraging! Out of the Senate! Poor Brazeau won't have peers like that again until he's incarcerated!
