How bout just an international-do-whatcha-want-day for any category of person? That pretty much encompasses everyone - no exclusions. Otherwise, whatever anyone calls a particular day will exclude someone. PCness is immensely comical sometimes.
we should just remove most of this crap from the schools anyway and focus on the basics

there is nothing gained academically or socially for that child and the others who will have them in their class

Wrong and bullshyte. I really wish people (and teachers) would stop pigeon holing.

actually that is untrue...the reason kids are not failed is because they become the biggest disrupters in the class, physically larger than the little ones around them, disturbing, disrupting and bullying the little ones...there is no proven reason to hold them back in a system where there is special education for which we pay millions.

okay, I'm open...tell me what's gained

My youngest gained, both socially and academically. We had to fight tooth and nail to have him held back. He was well behind his peers academically and had very few friends. We held him back and his grades increased, he became more self confident, and developed a very broad group of friends.

excellent, and glad he had someone to advocate for him who understood his needs

that is not always the case...sometimes they stand head and shoulders above the little ones, are so far behind academically because they simply cannot catch up and act out because they are bored

some think they should be held back to "teach them a lesson" we both know that simply doesn't work,
each child has to be considered from a unique perspective...one shoe does not fit every foot

There should be no reason, that any of the adults involved, would not have known his "needs". The problem lies with the teachers and the administration putting their own "needs" ahead of the kids.

and whose fault is it that a child ends up falling that far behind?

Only the brain dead think that.

We all know that every kid has his own rate of learning so why should we expect a kid with say an I.Q. of 90 to cover and absorb the same material as a kid with an I.Q. of 140? There is absolutely no benefit in pushing a kid ahead who hasn't grasped the basic concepts. How the hell can a kid learn geometry and trigonometry when he/she doesn't know how to add and subtract?

There should be no reason, that any of the adults involved, would not have known his "needs". The problem lies with the teachers and the administration putting their own "needs" ahead of the kids.

You have such a flattering way of putting things, Gerry. -:)

It's high time teachers, parents and children all got back on the same page. The reason a kid goes to school is to learn...............PERIOD. Teachers are not day care providers. If the teacher needs to instill discipline to put the kids in a mood receptive to learn, he/she should be able to do so without parental interference (within the acceptable methods).

Maybe it's time to have a "moonbeam walk" to raise money for moonbeam lobotomies.

Free granola, recycled cotton T-shirts and lobotomies for all who attend.

I'm worth it

I'll take your word for it-:)

because some kids might have two moms or two dads

A Nova Scotia school is causing controversy after deciding to stop celebrating Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, instead opting to recognize the International Day of Families instead.

The Dartmouth elementary school said it is aiming to celebrate diversity and inclusivity while avoiding making children who are part of non-traditional families feel left out.

Maybe we should burn down all the churches because not everyone believes in God. (that's about as much sense as I can make out of that idea, the sad part is teachers are supposed to have some brains!)
