U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice accused Hamas militants of provoking Israel's military incursion into the Gaza Strip and trying to wreck the peace process.

Rice made the comments in Cairo on Tuesday before heading to Israel, where she says she will work toward the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Negotiations were put on hold by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas following Israel's offensive into Gaza to stop Hamas from firing rockets into the southern part of the country. The campaign has left more than 100 Palestinians dead.

"There has to be an active peace process that can withstand the efforts of rejectionists to keep peace from being made; the people who are firing rockets do not want peace," Rice told reporters in Cairo. "They sow instability, that is what Hamas is doing."

Rice backed Israel's right to respond to the rocket fire. While cautioning Israel to avoid causing civilian casualties, she declined to call for a ceasefire.

"The rocket attacks against innocent Israelis in their cities need to stop. This can't go on. No Israeli government can tolerate that," she said. But the Israelis "need to be aware of the effects of these operations on innocent people."

Although Israeli ground troops withdrew from the Gaza Strip on Monday, officials have vowed to continue the campaign against Hamas and warned that a full-scale invasion is possible.

Despite the conflict, Rice was still confident a deal on a Palestinian state could be reached this year.

"I do think that negotiations ought to resume as soon as possible," Rice told reporters on her plane. "I understand that the situation has been complicated. But the longer the negotiations are not ongoing or the longer that they are suspended, if that's what one wants to call it, the more it is a victory for those who don't want to see a two-state solution."

Rice is set to meet Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, and then with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Oh Rice you Rodent-Clown, shove a cork in it why don't you?

Once again trying to put the finger pointing directly on Hamas, blaming them for Israel's actions, when it's already above and beyond the point of figuring out who started what, since it all never really ended in the first place and has been continually going on.

No this isn't a stab at Israel, although they deserve a good flogging for their own actions in this situation, but the perspective of this conflict needs to change and the blame shifting needs to stop before anybody can start talking about peace / peace talks.

Do I have to say this again?

If Hamas stopped firing rockets into Israel, would there be an Israeli response?

No. Why would there be?

If the Israelis unilaterally quit Gaza and left it completely in the hands of the Palestinians, would they quit shooting at the Israelis?

Wait a minute! Israel DID quit Gaza, and it instantly turned into number one launch site for missiles into Israel.

Add to that that Hamas is an anti-democratic, Islamist bunch of terrorists and murderers supported mainly by Syria and Iran......while Israel is our ally, a free democratic nation, and only one conclusion is reasonably possible...

GO IDF

Kick ass, take names.

Hey Colpy....

Since you believe that any reason is a good reason so long as an American tells you its a good reason for bombing and killing anyone anywhere any time....will it take an American to tell you when you're safe from people who can and dare to think for themselves?

Mikey, the Americans have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with this.

And no, I don't always agree with the US gov't......you should look at little closer at my posts.

BTW, Jews make up a mere 1.7 percent of the adult population of the United States............yet no American can win the presidency on an anti-Israel platform.

Why?

No, it isn't the World Wide Jewish Conspiracy.

It is because the American PEOPLE are much better than Canadians at figuring out who there friends are. That simple.

Wreck the peace process??? From the start, the U.S. has armed Israel with the most modern, state of the art, military equipment available and further supports Israel to the tune of $3 billion annually. With the wonderful U.S. supplied military, Israel has annexed all of what was once Palestine. If the Palestinians retaliate, they are called terrorists.(much like Iraqis) Somehow Israel is allowed to bomb and kill tens of thousands of Palestinians in their search for so-called terrorists. They can bomb a whole building and kill a dozen people, including women and children, if they even suspect that a "terrorist" might be inside. Peace process? Israel has never been part of a peace process.

Do I have to say this again?

I guess so.....

If Hamas stopped firing rockets into Israel, would there be an Israeli response?

And if Israel stopped blocking their acess to power, food and water, didn't use cluster bombs on civilian populated areas and killed just as indiscriminately as the rocket attacks (which is the point the rockets are to potray in the first place) then perhaps they wouldn't launch them to begin with. Don't forget about the bombardment on a UN watchtower that went on for hours before all the UN members were killed.... now with the evil potrayal of Hama that the media and you would like to pin on them.... one would think this would be an act by them, but nope.... Israel blew the snot out of them, even after repeated calls to stop from those in the UN tower.

I mean, seriously.... what crack were they smoking that they didn't know it was a UN facility? It's Got a bit "UN" on it with little guys with blue hats inside.

Once again, it's the mentality of trying to point the majority of the blame on one side over the other, when both are equally to blame in this situation in their own respected ways.

If the Israelis unilaterally quit Gaza and left it completely in the hands of the Palestinians, would they quit shooting at the Israelis?

Wait a minute! Israel DID quit Gaza, and it instantly turned into number one launch site for missiles into Israel.

And? Finding the reason why is the first step in finding the solution.... not continually trying to blame one another for the war in which they are both fighting. And they didn't really "quit Gaza" on their own accord, but from mounting international pressure, esspecially after the UN attack.

Add to that that Hamas is an anti-democratic,

So? Democracy isn't the be all end all method of living, as it too has it's own flaws like any other system.

Islamist bunch of terrorists and murderers supported mainly by Syria and Iran......

Sez who? Oh yes, I already know who's claiming to support them. And whoever is supporting them is also irrelevent, as any side to any war has support from someone.... Israel has support of the US and other countries.... once again.... so?

while Israel is our ally, a free democratic nation, and only one conclusion is reasonably possible...

GO IDF

Kick ass, take names.

Just because they have a Democratic government, it is not a default for support, actions are, and both are equally guilty in this situation.

Agreed. I mean if it wasn't so one-sided towards Israel alone and things were looked at unbiased, a solution may be found.
