VANCOUVER — A British Columbia man acquitted of terrorism-related charges has filed a lawsuit against the provincial and federal governments, arguing he was maliciously prosecuted in violation of his charter rights.
Othman Hamdan was charged in 2015 over 85 Facebook posts in which he supported some actions of Islamic State militants and celebrated “lone wolf” terrorists. Last year, a B.C. judge ruled his comments might have been offensive, but they didn’t constitute inciting terrorism.
Hamdan has filed a lawsuit that argues Canadian and B.C. authorities prosecuted him despite the absence of probable grounds supporting his guilt and chose to ignore a body of evidence that supported his innocence.
“The conduct of the defendants was reckless, intentional, deliberate, in disregard of the plaintiff’s rights, indifferent to the consequences and exploited the plaintiff’s vulnerability,” says the notice of civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court.
Hamdan, 35, is a Jordanian national of Palestinian descent who came to B.C. after living in the United States and was granted refugee status following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He has been detained pending the results of an immigration review.
At the time of his arrest, he was living in the northern community of Fort St. John. The Facebook posts were written between September 2014 and July 2015, with one reading, “Lone wolves, we salute you.”
In acquitting Hamdan, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Bruce Butler wrote that he “was trying to highlight what he perceived to be hypocrisy and injustice, support some of the actions of (the Islamic State) in its defence of Sunni Muslims in Iraq and Syria and promote discussion about these issues.”
Hamdan says in his notice of civil claim that he only learned during trial that the sole evidence being presented against him was the online posts, which he says are constitutionally protected speech and “woefully inadequate evidence to secure a conviction.”
None of the allegations contained in the lawsuit has been proven and no statements of defence have been filed.
Hamdan alleges the Crown never presented the full body of evidence in their possession — hundreds, if not thousands of posts — but simply chose particular posts which fit their theory of the case.
“The only purpose of the plaintiff’s incarceration has been to disrupt him from having access to a computer to voice constitutionally protected speech, in violation of his charter rights,” says the lawsuit.
Hamdan says he remains “unlawfully” incarcerated and has suffered damages including loss of liberty, reputation, privacy and opportunity to earn income, as well as humiliation, pain and suffering.
He adds the defendants’ conduct “offends the moral standards of the community and warrants the condemnation of this court.
“In doing so, they acted in a manner inconsistent with their roles as ministers of justice and with an intention to subvert or abuse the office of the provincial Crown and the process of criminal justice, and so exceeded the boundaries of the office and of the provincial Crown.”

New ISIS Video Sings to U.S. Jihadists:
'It is Now Time to Rise, Slit Their Throats, Watch Them Die'

The Islamic State issued a new video today calling on "brothers in Europe, America, Russia, Australia, Canada and elsewhere" to "kill them all" as "it is now time to rise."

The English-language nasheed, inspirational songs frequently released by terror groups, shows scenes of Western terrorists' handiwork -- including the March 2017 Westminster Bridge attack and the ISIS pledge video recorded by Berlin Christmas market terrorist Anis Amri -- mingled with ISIS battlefield scenes and beheadings in Syria.

The video from ISIS' official Al-Hayat Media Center was distributed widely on YouTube and social media platforms Twitter and Facebook, along with being posted on file-sharing sites.

Kabul on high alert after ambulance bomb toll tops 100

Kabul (AFP) - Afghanistan Sunday declared a day of national mourning as the toll for those killed by a huge bomb hidden in an ambulance in Kabul topped 100 people and tensions remained high after insurgents struck in the city for the second time in a week.

At least 103 people were killed and 235 wounded in Saturday's lunchtime attack claimed by the Taliban, which caused panic in the war-torn capital and overwhelmed its hospitals.

Kabul remained on high alert as the presidential palace declared a national day of mourning for Sunday, with flags flying at half-mast. The attack was one of the worst to strike the capital in recent years.

OTTAWA — December brought a rise in the number of asylum seekers apprehended between formal entry points at the Canada-U.S. border.
New figures from the federal government show 1,978 people were stopped by the RCMP, up from 1,623 the month before.
The majority were stopped in Quebec, with others in Manitoba and British Columbia.

The December crossings still pale in comparison to a spike of over 5,000 people stopped in Quebec alone in August.
But, the figures make December the third-busiest month for illegal border crossings in 2017, despite months of work by the federal government to stop the flow.
Asylum claims were also up, however, at official border crossings, with increases at both airports and land entry points.
Altogether, over 49,000 claims for asylum were filed in 2017, the statistics show.
The last time more than 40,000 claims were filed in Canada in a single year was 2001.

Muslim invaders posing as refugees are expected to cost Sweden $18.2 billion this year, nearly 10 times over budget. And that’s just the cost for 318,000 Syrian Muslims who arrived in the last two years. There already are two million mostly welfare-dependent Muslim migrants in Sweden out of a population of just 10 million!

Furthermore, due to public pressure, the government has stated it intends to deport some 80,000 migrants. To cover their costs, Sweden’s government has budgeted $2.2 billion for “migration” for 2017. This is absurdly low.

Why? Sweden’s government deliberately hides the true costs of the migrant crisis to maintain order. This is also the case in Germany, where the number of Islamic immigrants is underestimated by half. Therefore, I base my analysis on the work of private researchers, who have tried to fill the statistical gaps left by Sweden’s government.

Furthermore, migrants are not contributing to Sweden’s economy—of those refugees that came in 2015, only 500 have jobs.
Calculating the Cost of Sweden’s Syrian Refugees
Let’s look at the facts. Since 2013, Sweden has been deluged by 318,000 total migrants—lots of people, given there are only 10 million people in Sweden (2 million of which are immigrants).

Here’s how the basic costs break down:
Let’s assume that Sweden immediately deports 80,000 people. Given the average cost of deporting someone in Sweden is $37,000, this works out to $2.96 billion.

Sweden’s government spends roughly $17,000 per year, per adult migrant, on general asylum costs (housing, food etc.). Given that there are 181,000 adult migrants, this works out to $3.1 billion—already 50% higher than Sweden’s budgeted “migration” costs.

Sweden also has a very generous system for underage migrants—their subsidies actually work out to $74,000 per year per migrant (they get a daily stipend for food etc.). Since there are an estimated 57,000 migrant children in Sweden, this works out to $4.2 billion.

The cost of social services is enormous: migrants get access to Swedish state-funded education, healthcare etc. However, since Sweden’s government excludes migrant status from usage statistics, it’s impossible to know their exact burden. The exception is education—we know that migrant children are educated at a cost of $17,600 per year.

This works out to $1 billion a year. The real education costs are probably higher (but the data is inadequate), because migrant children need translators (sometimes 5 translators per classroom), schools have to pay for added security measures, and migrant children often exhibit learning disabilities (caused by trauma, poor developmental healthcare in their homeland etc.) which means nurses & care-workers are needed in greater numbers.

Healthcare costs are also significant, with migrants receiving full benefits under Swedish law. Given that Sweden spends an average of $6,808 on healthcare per person per year, this works out to $1.6 billionfor the remaining migrants. Again, the real costs are probably higher, because the migrants are by and large not as healthy as are native Swedes.

Will massive Muslim immigration bankrupt and destroy Sweden?

Oh, so THAT'S why UN TRUEDIE and his idjit MINIONS want to destroy CANADA.
(some of those minions claim to know something about money, except they don't seem to know where it comes from.)

The lives of two “Dreamers” just turned into a nightmare.
Cops say two men in the U.S. under the Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program were arrested for human smuggling, officials said.
Border Patrol agents reportedly arrested the two men in separate incidents on Jan. 24-25.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection received a tip-off from a witness who observed human smuggling in the San Diego area.
Officials arrived and conducted an immigration check. A 20-year-old man in the car was a DACA recipient and his 22-year-old cousin was illegal along with another 21-year-old illegal.
“Both the driver and his cousin admitted their involvement with human smuggling in the area,” Customs and Border Protection said in a release.
The driver’s DACA has expired and is being held in custody.
In the second incident at a border checkpoint, a 22-year-old DACA recipient was stopped and admitted he was scouting for the coyotes who smuggle illegals across the U.S.-Mexico frontier.
An investigation revealed he had long been involved in smuggling illegals across the border.
He was in violation of the terms of his DACA status and is being held in custody by the Department of Homeland Security custody.

WINNIPEG — A Manitoba government backbencher is apologizing after calling asylum seekers a “drain on society” on Twitter and for retweeting posts that suggested Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was a “scumbag.”
Cliff Graydon posted a message late Tuesday saying he is undergoing sensitivity training and taking a break from social media after coming under fire for the posts.
“Above all political debates must be respected,” he posted. “This is a standard that I’ve not met on social media, as a result I will be taking some sensitivity training while limiting social media activity. I wish to offer my sincere and unequivocal apology for any offensive (sic) I’ve made.”
In a tweet posted at the end of January, Graydon replied to a tweet where a woman called asylum seekers “illegals” and called them a “drain on society.”
(Screenshot/Twitter)
Graydon represents the town of Emerson on the United States border where many asylum seekers have crossed into Canada.
Last week, he retweeted a post which called Trudeau “a disgrace” with the hashtag “scumbag.” An earlier retweet from December 2017 referred to “turdeau” and questioned “How can any woman vote for that SICK/RETARDED/TRAITOR?”
The Progressive Conservative caucus issued a short statement saying it had been made aware of “some unacceptable comments made or retweeted by Mr. Graydon.”
“These tweets do not reflect the views our caucus and our government,” caucus chair Wayne Ewasko wrote.
A party spokesperson said the caucus leadership and Graydon agreed he should “step back” from social media and take some sensitivity training.

HOUSTON —— Harris County prosecutors say a 41-year-old Pakistani man who fled Texas where he’s charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl is being returned to Houston after he was arrested and unsuccessfully sought asylum in Canada.
Authorities say Aamir Khan was being extradited Thursday from Quebec.
The head of the fugitive apprehension section of the Harris County district attorney’s office, Kim Bryant, says Khan was “walking through the woods” in November in Canada when he was arrested by Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Officials believe he was planning to return to his native Pakistan.
Khan is facing up to 20 years in prison in Texas if convicted of charges of indecency with a child and sexual assault of a child.
He does not yet have a court appearance scheduled in Houston.

ATHENS, Greece — The United Nations refugee agency is urging Greece’s government to provide separate housing and washing facilities for women and children at island refugee camps, citing the risk of sexual violence.
The UNHCR says it has received reports from about 180 camp residents who say they have suffered some form of sexual or gender-based violence after arriving in Greece.
A UNHCR statement Friday said the situation is particularly worrying in the crowded refugee camps of Moria on Lesvos and Vathy on Samos, where toilets and washing facilities are “no-go zones” after dark for unaccompanied women and children.
It cited a woman in Moria who said she had not showered for two months for fear of attack.
The UNHCR called on Greece to do more to protect camp residents.

Michelle-Lynn Erstikaitis, a diagnosed psychopath, and long-time offender, poses for a photo in downtown Toronto on Thursday, Nov.22, 2012.Ernest Doroszuk/Toronto Sun
She has played many roles in her life, and now she’s playing lawyer.
Michelle Erstikaitis is representing herself in her latest brush with the law. The woman who once wrote love letters to Paul Bernardo is dressed in a conservative, well-cut pant suit, her long, straight blonde hair and makeup carefully done. She is articulate and argumentative and apparently quite impressed with her own abilities.
She always thought of herself as the smartest person in the room. As she once told a judge in 2011, “I have a bit more intelligence and education than the average criminal. I have read Martin’s Criminal Code twice.”
The stakes now, though, are high.
Paul Bernardo at Kingston Penitentiary in 1995.
Already designated a dangerous offender, Erstikaitis is defending herself at her upcoming trial on charges of attempted murder, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence and aggravated assault.
According to Toronto Police, Erstikaitis allegedly walked into the U.S. Consular Office on University Ave. on July 18, 2016 to seek asylum and pushed her way in, shouting “ISIS is coming to kill you.”
Sun sources at the time alleged she was armed with a three-inch box-cutter blade, which was used to slash a security guard’s throat, narrowly missing a major artery. As the woman was taken to the ground, she allegedly swung the knife again, slicing his right arm.
At her first court appearance, she complained about being “tortured” and “terrorized” by “my government.”
The question is why she wasn’t safely locked away at the time.
Like a more cunning Forrest Gump, she always seems to attach herself to the notorious and run up a thick resume of bizarre headlines. “I am famous, google me,” she wrote on one of her online profiles.
Now 38, she first gained attention as a teenaged superfan of Paul Bernardo, insisting the serial killer was innocent. In 1999, her obsession drove her to call — and threaten to kill — Debbie Mahaffy, the mother of Leslie Mahaffy, who was brutally murdered by Bernardo almost a decade earlier.
Leslie Mahaffy , of Burlington, was abducted and killed by schoolgirl killer Paul Bernardo just weeks before her 15th birthday.
If that weren’t cruel enough, Erstikaitis would sometimes call the Mahaffy home and pretend she was their slain daughter.
Convicted of making death threats, Erstikaitis was sentenced to two years probation. She put it down to youthful hijinks.
“As a Goth teenager in the 90s I was fascinated by horror movies and serial killers and I started writing to Bernardo because I thought it would be cool to write to a serial killer,” she explained on a white nationalist site in 2013. “Then one day my friends and I foolishly thought it would be amusing to place a prank phone call to the mother of one of Bernardo’s victims and I was charged.”
At 20, Erstikaitis was convicted of arson after setting fire to her Hamilton apartment. She was placed on a six-year, long-term offender order after psychological testing concluded she was a psychopath.
In 2009, while under the final months of her LTO supervision, she stabbed her boyfriend in Toronto with a pair of scissors. While in court on that charge, she threw a cup of water at a court officer and spit at her — gaining herself a new count of assault.
She begged to be designated a dangerous offender — just like Bernardo.
Michelle Lyne Erstikaitis, then 23, a diagnosed psychopath, who had served two-thirds of a two-year parole prison term for a Hamilton arson, was dropped outside a Salvation Army hostel on Keele St. in 2005.
After a long hearing, a judge took that rare step in 2011. But instead of being jailed indefinitely, as once was the case, the newly enacted provisions in the Criminal Code allowed her to be simply placed under a 10-year supervision order. Erstikaitis was promptly given double credit for time served and released to a halfway house.
She next made the papers a few weeks later when she was booted from the federal election campaign team of a Toronto Conservative candidate. She’d used a fake name to volunteer as an envelope stuffer.
Erstikaitis has never been far from the news: She’s claimed killer Luka Magnotta stalked her and that she was the last one to speak to Ashley Smith before she hung herself in prison. A self-described white supremacist, she once wrote for the “Your Ward News” racist newspaper and endorsed Paul Fromm.
Now she’s making headlines yet again. But this time, if Erstikaitis is convicted, she could be jailed indefinitely.

Canadian refugee board ditches legal timelines to deal with 47,000 new claims

OTTAWA — Grappling with a historic level of asylum claims, the Immigration and Refugee Board appears to be officially giving up on following regulations dictating they must hold refugee hearings within a certain time.
Meeting the legislated time frame to hear claims has increasingly posed a challenge for the independent tribunal as the number of asylum seekers has risen steadily since 2014.
But after running out of internal solutions, a statement from the board Tuesday suggested they are simply out of options in the face of a backlog that grows larger by the day.
Instead, they will hear claims primarily in the order in which they were received.
“Many refugee claimants have been waiting a long time for their hearing,” said Shereen Benzvy Miller, deputy chairperson of the board’s refugee protection division.
“Given the current situation, focusing on hearing our claims in the order in which they were referred, while making room for efficiencies, is the right thing to do.”
Over 47,000 new claims for asylum were referred to the IRB in 2017, a record-setting number, due in part to a surge of asylum seekers at the Canada-U.S. border. Over 18,000 people crossed illegally into Canada last year to claim asylum, according to statistics from the board.
As of the end of December, there were 43,000 cases awaiting a decision, and as of Feb. 1, the projected wait time for claims was 20 months.
View full pending refugee claims by country here.
Rising numbers of new claims have a domino effect, the board said Tuesday. With the increase, comes an increase in people appealing decisions. If they win those appeals, their claims must be reheard.
“With the significant increase in new refugee protection claims, the waiting time for other matters such as older claims and returns from the Refugee Appeal Division and the Federal Court that must be reheard has also increased,” the board said.
“In order to be able to hear all these other matters in a reasonable period, the (refugee protection division) must remove new referrals from its current schedule at this time due to operational limitations.”
Regulations laying out time limits to hear asylum claims came into force in 2012 as part of the previous Conservative government’s overhaul of the refugee determination system.
An RCMP officer moves a barricade as they wait for the arrival of asylum seekers crossing the border into Canada from the United States at a police checkpoint close to the Canada-U.S. border near Hemmingford, Que., on Thursday, August 3, 2017. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Paul Chiasson
The government was trying to address lengthy delays in the refugee determination process, which at the time included waits ranging from 20 to 24 months and a backlog of about 32,000 cases.
The new system was known as the designated country of origin program and divided claimants into categories, depending on where they were from. In turn, time limits were attached for refugee hearings — between 30 to 60 days depending on where the claim was filed and where the claimant was from.
At first, internal audits of the program have suggested, the time limits weren’t a major issue, but as the number of asylum seekers began to rise beginning in 2014, the board started to struggle to meet the deadlines and a backlog began to grow. The issue has been flagged by the board in nearly all of its reports to government since.
The Liberal government has promised to overhaul the country of origin regime, but has yet to introduce any changes.

The officer serving as second in command at Toronto’s troubled 13 Division had his Bradford home raided as Peel Regional Police investigated an alleged immigration scam earlier this month.
Acting Insp. Paul Qureshi’s wife, Mariam Qureshi, 36, her mother and the alleged ringleader, Sakia Mojadiddi, 61, along with the elder woman’s two younger daughters, Dunya Mojadiddi, 26, and Morassa Rizvir, 32, are now charged with fraud-related offences from a scheme that police allege fleeced victims from the Middle East who dreamed of bringing loved ones to Canada.
Peel cops allege eight victims from their region lost approximately $800,000. All four women are free and are due back in court March 12.
Toronto cops say Paul Qureshi, who was installed as acting inspector at 13 Division in September or October 2017, will remain in his position and is not under investigation by his own service.
“If you want more information, I suggest you go to Peel Regional,” Toronto Police spokesman Mark Pugash said Wednesday.
“Names of the spouses will not be released at this time,” stated Peel police spokesman Const. Bancroft Wright. “As for the spouses facing charges, the investigation is ongoing.”
Earlier, police said the investigation started in July when a victim reported paying large amounts of money to an organization called Afghan Refugee Relief, or AAR, to help sponsor family members wanting to immigrate to Canada.
It’s alleged Sakia Mojadiddi, of Mississauga, didn’t complete the paperwork or refund the customer. She wasn’t authorized to file the documents, Peel police said in October 2017.
The alleged leader was busted on fraud charges two months earlier and after investigators divulged details of the case 38 alleged victims came forward, said Peel police at the time.
The victims came from the Europe, the Middle East and North America.
Peel cops executed search warrants on Feb. 15, 2017, at three homes — two in Peel Region and one in Bradford, Ont., northwest of Newmarket.
Several Bradford neighbours — who are police officers in other jurisdictions — watched in disbelief as the home of a senior Toronto cop was searched.
Sources told the Sun that Toronto police brass wanted to suppress the Peel busts involving a spouse of senior officer because of the recent tide of bad news streaming from 13 Division.
Toronto Police Const. Vittorio Dominelli appears with a fellow officer in a Bollywood-style video posted online.
Last month, two 13 Division constables were suspended after allegedly getting stoned on edible weed snacks snatched during a pot dispensary raid.
One of the two cops was allegedly so high he ended up in a tree near Black Creek Dr. and Eglinton Ave. W.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
Const. Vittorio Dominelli, a 10-year member of the force, and Const. Jamie Young, who has only two years on the job, have been suspended with pay while officers with the Toronto Police Service’s Professional Standards Unit investigate.

BERLIN — A food bank in western Germany drew widespread criticism Friday for its decision to stop giving access cards to foreigners, who it says make up a growing percentage of its users. The move was hailed by some far-right groups.
The food bank in Essen announced last month it would only register new users if they prove they’ve got German citizenship, saying some elderly people and women were being scared away.

The chairman of city’s integration council, Miguel Martin Gonzalez Kliefken, warned the decision would play into the hands of far-right groups.
In an interview with broadcaster n-tv, Kliefken said the food bank should remove any troublemakers rather than punish people based on their nationality.

The Essen food bank said about three-quarters of its users are foreigners now. Its chairman, Joerg Sartor, told the regional daily WAZ that its staff was concerned about a “lack of respect toward women” among some young foreign men.
Other food banks and migrant rights group rejected the move, saying the problem could be dealt with differently.
“There are no first- or second-class people in need,” Berlin’s food bank said.

Ulrike Demmer, a spokeswoman for the German government, declined to comment on the specific case but said “Germany is a country of humanity and everyone in need should receive help,”
Despite having a strong social safety net, Germany has about 930 food banks that provide basic goods to people who depend on state benefits.

'No better than a gang lookout': ICE chief slams Oakland mayor for immigration raid warning

SAN FRANCISCO — A top immigration official said Wednesday that about 800 people living illegally in Northern California were able to avoid arrest because of a weekend warning that Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf put on Twitter.
“What she did is no better than a gang lookout yelling ’police’ when a police cruiser comes in the neighbourhood, except she did it to a whole community,” Thomas Homan, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement acting chief, told “Fox and Friends.”
The mayor warned residents over the weekend of large-scale, impending raids by immigration agents in the San Francisco Bay Area, escalating tensions between California officials and the Trump administration.
Homan said the Justice Department is looking into whether Schaaf obstructed justice and said her actions allowed immigrants who have committed crimes to remain in Oakland, making the community less safe.
“I just can’t believe it happened,” he said.
Federal immigration agents arrested more than 150 people in California in the days after Schaaf’s warning of the raids, the agency announced Tuesday.

Agents made the arrests in a three-day sweep starting Sunday that covered cities from Sacramento in the north to Stockton in California’s Central Valley agricultural heartland. About half of those arrested for being in the country illegally had criminal convictions, the agency said.
Schaaf, a Democrat who is running for re-election this year, warned residents on Twitter Saturday night that “credible sources” told her a sweep was imminent, calling it her “duty and moral obligation” to warn families.
California lawmakers from Gov. Jerry Brown, also a Democrat, down to local mayors have resisted a Trump administration immigration crackdown that they contend is arbitrarily hauling in otherwise law-abiding people and splitting up families that include U.S.-born children.
In a statement Tuesday, Homan suggested the sweep targeted so-called “sanctuary cities” that limit co-operation between ICE and local law enforcement.
“Sanctuary jurisdictions like San Francisco and Oakland shield dangerous criminal aliens from federal law enforcement at the expense of public safety,” Homan said. “Because these jurisdictions prevent ICE from arresting criminal aliens in the secure confines of a jail, they also force ICE officers to make more arrests out in the community, which poses increased risks for law enforcement and the public.”

Defenders of sanctuary city practices say they improve public safety by promoting trust among law enforcement and immigrant communities and reserving scarce police resources for other, more urgent crime-fighting needs.
ICE said those arrested included several people with convictions for crimes such as assault with a deadly weapon, including a man who had been previously deported to Mexico eight times.
Schaaf said in a statement Tuesday night that her earlier warning “was meant to give all residents time to learn their rights and know their legal options.”
“I do not regret sharing this information,” Schaaf added. “It is Oakland’s legal right to be a sanctuary city and we have not broken any laws. We believe our community is safer when families stay together.”
The immigration sweep was the second in California since a statewide sanctuary law took effect last month. Agents have arrested more than 200 people earlier this month in the Los Angeles area.

SAN DIEGO — A Mexican man who was deported twice and had a history of arrests was able to assume the identity of an American citizen and receive more than $360,000 in government benefits for nearly four decades, California court records show.
Andres Avelino Anduaga used a fake birth certificate starting in 1980 to develop a seemingly legitimate persona by applying for a California driver’s license, Social Security number and U.S. passport, according to documents obtained by the San Diego Union-Tribune. The official U.S. documents identified him as Abraham Riojos, born in Texas in 1958.
Anduaga, who’s actually 66 years old and a resident of Tijuana, Mexico, pleaded guilty last week in San Diego to theft of public property and being a previously removed unauthorized immigrant in the U.S., the newspaper reported Saturday.
He has agreed to pay back government agencies what he stole but could face additional fines and 12 years in prison when sentenced in May.
Anduaga’s charade began to unravel in April 2015 during a standard review to determine whether he was still eligible for disability benefits. The man who called himself Riojos gave an address in the Southern California city of Chula Vista, according to the criminal complaint. But when investigators visited the home in January 2016, the landlord admitted Riojos never lived there but instead resided in Mexico, court papers show.
Investigators turned to border crossing records, finding frequent travels indicating Riojos had likely been living in Mexico.
Further investigation revealed the man claiming to be Riojos had a rap sheet that included 21 different names and six dates of birth, dating back to 1974, the newspaper reported. They included a firearms violation, forgery, cocaine possession and multiple DUIs, according to prosecutors.
Immigration records showed he’d been deported in 1994 and again in 2000.
An analysis of Anduaga’s benefits showed he first applied for Supplemental Security Income benefits in 1989 and was awarded payments retroactive to 1988. He received monthly payments — $244,441 total — until Aug. 1, 2016, according to his plea agreement.
He also qualified for Medi-Cal benefits and payments and received $112,981 total. In addition, he illegally received more than $3,486 in food stamps under a county program, according to records.
Investigators tracked down the real Abraham Riojos to a small town in rural Florida. He told the special agents who visited him that he had no idea his identity had been used all these years.

NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey Transit has suspended a conductor for allegedly announcing on a morning train that immigration agents were on board looking for “illegals.”
The incident occurred Monday morning on a train headed from New Jersey to New York.
An NJ Transit spokeswoman didn’t identify the conductor but said he has more than 30 years’ experience at the agency. He was suspended without pay Monday pending an investigation.
NJ Transit called the alleged conduct “offensive, inappropriate and unprofessional.”
A spokesman for the Newark office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement said no agents were on the train.
He said agents conduct targeted enforcement of criminals and would have had to have been in pursuit of such a person to board public transportation.

'Islam doesn't belong to Germany': Interior minister tells Muslims to 'live with us, not parallel to or against us'

BERLIN — Germany’s new interior minister said Friday he doesn’t consider Islam to be a part of Germany, a position that puts him at odds with Chancellor Angela Merkel on the central question of migration.
Horst Seehofer, the country’s top security official, told the Bild newspaper that “Islam doesn’t belong to Germany,” but added that “the Muslims who live with us are, of course, part of Germany.”
Seehofer said his message to Muslims was: “Live with us, not parallel to or against us.”

His Bavaria-only Christian Social Union, which has always taken a harder line on migration than Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratic Union, faces a state election later this year in which the anti-Islam Alternative for Germany party is expected to do well.
Asked about Seehofer’s comments, Merkel said while Germany is shaped by its Judeo-Christian heritage, “now there are 4 million Muslims living in Germany” — a country of about 82 million people.
“They can live their religion here too,” she said. “These Muslims belong to Germany and in the same way their religion belongs to Germany, that is to say Islam.”
She added that the Islam practiced by Muslims in Germany would have to conform to the country’s constitution.
The head of the Turkish Community in Germany, Gokay Sofuoglu, called Seehofer’s comments unhelpful at a time when the country is again seeing a rise in attacks on mosques and other Islamic institutions.
“Religious freedom is without a doubt part of Germany,” said Sofuoglu. “It’s in the constitution.”

The phrase “Islam is part of Germany” was coined by former President Christian Wulff in 2010 and has since become a battleground for those who oppose mass migration from Muslim countries.
The Alternative for Germany’s campaign in last year’s election — which saw the party win seats in national parliament for the first time — included the statement that “Islam is not a part of Germany.”

FUREY: U.S. border patrol sounds alarm over illegal entries arriving from Canada

Meanwhile, people continue to pour into Canada illegally ...
While Canadians have grown accustomed to reports of high numbers of people illegally flooding into their own country, new reports indicate the opposite is also happening.
The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol had a “busy weekend” a few days ago as they apprehended 20 individuals crossing illegally into their country from Canada. The illegal crossings took place on the borders of New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.
In the middle of the night last Friday, Champlain Border Patrol guards stopped nine people crossing via the West Service Road in Champlain, New York.
“All the individuals are citizens of Haiti with no immigration documents that would allow them to legally enter or remain in the United States,” a U.S. Customs release states. “Agents apprehended all nine individuals and transported them to the Champlain Station for processing.”

The next day, eight people were apprehended crossing into Vermont. Seven of them are Romanian citizens and one is a German citizen. The day after that a Guatemalan man crossed into Vermont on a bicycle, followed by two more Guatemalans crossing later in the day into New Hampshire.
When people cross illegally into Canada, the response from the federal government has typically been to provide them with housing and support until their asylum claim can be heard many months and potentially years from their date of arrival.
The United States appears to be treating those crossing illegally into their country differently, instead gearing them up for deportation as soon as possible.

“All of the apprehended individuals were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) for removal proceedings,” reads a release.
It’s unknown why these individuals chose to leave Canada for the United States and Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen’s office did not immediately respond to questions from Postmedia.
However, asylum seekers in Canada – particularly those from Haiti – have learned that staying here may not be as easy as they first thought.
Only around 10% of the almost 15,000 Haitian asylum seekers who came to Canada last year have so far been allowed to stay.

A recent Postmedia story reported on internal government emails that revealed how Prime Minister Justin Trudeau created chaos and confusion at the border by issuing his #WelcomeToCanada social media post in January of last year that was circulated around the world as a mistaken indication that Canada had open borders.
While illegal crossings into Canada hit a peak last July with a reported 5,712 RCMP interceptions, the number has still not returned to its pre-crisis levels.
This year’s data shows there were 1,517 interceptions in January and 1,565 in February, most of them at the Quebec border. It’s a sizeable increase over the 2017 numbers, which were 315 and 678, respectively.

Bracing for another spike in illegal border crossings

OTTAWA — Border officials are preparing for another spike in asylum seekers coming illegally into Canada from the U.S. as the weather gets warmer.
The RCMP intercepted more than 3,000 irregular border-crossers in January and February, part of a total number of 7,800 asylum seekers processed by the federal immigration department and the Canada Border Services Agency during the same time period.
Those figures don’t include more than 600 additional arrivals who entered the country illegally through Quebec over the Easter weekend.
Officials are expecting those numbers to continue to grow as temperatures rise. Immigration and CBSA officials have been preparing for the influx after getting caught flat-footed last summer dealing with an unexpected surge in mainly Haitian migrants entering Canada through Ontario and Quebec.
“Canada is an open and welcoming country to those in need of protection, but our government is committed to orderly migration to protect Canadians and our immigration system. Our government is prepared for any future fluctuations,” said Mathieu Genest, press secretary for Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen.
Many of the most recent migrants crossing illegally into Canada are Nigerian, which suggests word-of-mouth about Canada as a safe haven for asylum seekers has continued to spread despite Canadian efforts to counter it. A number of Liberal MPs headed south last year in an effort to warn would-be travellers against making the trip.
In any event, if more migrants continue to arrive, border officials will be ready, Genest said Friday. “We have worked with various departments, provinces and settlement organizations to develop a national operations plan to manage possible scenarios at the border.”
The Liberal government has also committed $74 million to help address lengthy backlogs in processing refugee claims at the Immigration and Refugee Board. The department has also cut work-permit wait times for asylum seekers from three months to three weeks and issued more than 12,000 work permits to asylum seekers in Quebec.
But the Canadian Council for Refugees says it is concerned about vulnerable migrants being exploited by scammers who offer to help them cross the border for a hefty fee.
“People pay up large amounts of money, get to Canada, find out that they’re making a refugee claim … and find out they’ve been lied to by the scammers,” said executive director Janet Dench. “That sort of thing happens quite regularly.”
The council has been calling for the government to suspend the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, which has been cited as a major factor in the spike of irregular border crossings.
The agreement makes it impossible for would-be refugees arriving from the U.S. to claim asylum at an official port of entry to Canada. They can only make such a claim from inside the country, prompting thousands to make the crossing on foot through unofficial entry points.
Suspending the agreement would all but eliminate irregular crossings and make migrant refugees less vulnerable to scammers, Dench said.
“There’s this whole charade that people have to go through in order to make a claim in Canada, which would be completely unnecessary if Canada would simply say, ‘We will suspend the safe third country agreement,’ and then people could apply in a regular way.”
But the government has made it clear no such changes will be forthcoming.
“The safe third country agreement is an important tool used by Canada and the U.S. to co-operate on the orderly handling of refugee claims. It is a vital component of our well-managed immigration system,” Genest said.
Last year, more than 50,000 asylum claims were processed by immigration and CBSA, more than twice the number processed every year prior since 2011.
