I guess the statues were painted at one time. Still it is nice to not have to picture emperors as black and white.

Yeah. They would have been painted.

I still wonder, though, how accurate the statues are as facial representations.

Those sculpture carvers were pretty damn good. I doubt you will find better ones today even. IMHO.

Just look at what this guy can do...it really is kind of impressive how they carve some things.
It's not that they weren't good. It's just that they made have made certain emperors look more handsome than they actually were, similar to how some portraits of the Tudor era made monarchs look better looking than they were. One of those emperors could have had a whopping great mole on his chin, but it was deliberately left out on his statue.

Oliver Cromwell wasn't bothered about that, though. When he was being painted he told the artist to make him look as accurate as possible - "warts and all", as he said.
