I never said I wanted Canada's history to disappear. I said the masses don't care.

What happened in 1759? The British defeated the French for control of North America. Where is some commenoration for that hugely important day? The year changed the course of history. The victory of the British that allowed Canada as we know it to exist. Quebec has paved over the site because losers remember better.

Are you doing much to promote pre-1867 Canadian/Nova Scotian/British Columbian history? Few are. That is bad old history from another country few feel part of. They had slavery and it is agreed slavery is bad and should be forgotten. History happened and it was significant, but the Canadian collective memory of it fades pre 1867. Nice of you to blame me for it though.

As you had mentioned history is not taught the way it used to be - from the various rebellions to the absentee landlords in PEI. I choose to believe we teach it all, warts and all. Much to be ashamed of and much to be proud of. How else to imbue a sense or comprehension of Canada and how we as a country have changed.

I have a history degree and the history I got of Canada grades 1-12 wasn't much. It was much better in university.

History is more than a bunch of facts, it's the story of a nation and I don't think we get much of a story. And our story begins in 1867, which is quite incomplete. Now the PC crowd prevents any discussion of politics or history in Canada. It was bad, things are much better now, don't worry about it, it's all being taken care of.

Yes, ideas of race go way before the Charter. I'm guessing here, but I don't think race is mentioned in the BNA Act for Confederation that made Canada. I don't think it got mentioned much in Canada before the 1960s in official govt documents. Govt documents are key, these documents create reality for society. Human rights isues are race issues to many, so that could started it.

The USA has always had a huge race issue with blacks and slavery. Canada had race issues of course, but on a smaller scale. Canada never enslaved millions of non-white people for centuries like the USA did in plantations over a vast territory in the south.

P.S. Canada had slaves too Dumpy.
